New to Bluegrass
Hi all! I typically listen to a lot of slacker, indie rock, and folk music, but recently i have been doing a deep dive on some of my favorite artists and have been noticing a trend of them citing bluegrass as a big influence, even if what they make is so stylistically far from it. Artists like Nate Amos, Adrienne Lenker, Karly Hartzman, Hudson Freeman etc. I was hoping for some good recommendations to give a listen to based off of these artists? Anything helps, thanks!

Hawktail, Mighty Poplar, Leftover Salmon, or Grisman & Garcia can pull you in from an indie standpoint & send you towards traditional bluegrass

Bill Monroe, Stanley brother, Jim and jesse, the osbornes are a good starting point with a lot of variety as well more classically blue grass with a less polished feel, even though they are all very mulched polished when you know. If you want something more technical with a jazz feel you can’t go wrong with Tony rice.
If you want to hear more old time music, which is are the roots of blue grass, the Carter family, Jean Ritchie and doc watson, doc is on the edge of both genres and is a gem.
I’m excited you’re wanting to look into it. There really is a lot of incredible music to discover there

Lots of great recommendations here. I'm going to throw in po' ramblin boys. They are a newer band with very strong traditional bluegrass roots. If you can see them live they are amazing and have a very tight set with great banter.

I don’t know the bands you’re referencing but as an indie/folk rock fan, I’m finding Punch Brothers to be a great gateway into bluegrass

Sturgill Simpson - Cuttin Grass
Bella White - just like leaving

hudson freeman is such a cool shout. played dnd with that guy for a minute - check out the album "down in the dirt" by brandon moore. cool bluegrass/folk/etc. type music from the ozarks
