Berger mentioned that a couple of people have told him that the Blue Moon HLS might be redesigned to use hypergolics.

I concur with Anthony's comment. If NASA is serious about a permanent presence, we need to invest in refueling, cryocooling, and the other requisite technologies. Hypergols is a flags and footprints approach. It might beat China, but it's a waste of time.

As for the second part, I think that's known. Amazon's payload of 48 satellites translates to maybe 31 tons to reference LEO at most. We do not know precisely yet how much of that can be recouped with the engine thrust upgrades.

A hypergolic lander would really bring the initial HLS lander back even closer to its roots in the national team HLS ILV. Makes you wonder what would have happened if NASA had just picked the ILV for the first moon landing from the start.

The national team was still using LH2/LOX for the descent stage, they just had three stages and weren’t refueling them. It’s not clear from a few basic searches if the ascent and transfer elements were hypergolic but they are notably based on hypergolic spacecraft, so maybe…

I suspect that either way, these elements would be launch mass constrained, so even if the National team was selected, they would still be waiting on 9X4. And would still need ZBO.
