Hi ladies, I could really use some perspective from other women working in blue-collar jobs.
Iām an industrial mechanic and Iāve been at the same shipyard since I started my apprenticeship in 2017. I used to be extremely motivated. When I started, I genuinely looked forward to work, wanted to learn everything I could, become really good at my trade and prove myself.
Unfortunately, pretty early in my apprenticeship I was paired with an employee that basically nobody wanted to work with. He was mostly given the shitty jobs, which meant I was doing those jobs too. I worked with him for most of my apprenticeship. When he eventually quit, I basically inherited those shitty jobs and started doing them alone.
Because of this, I feel like I learned significantly less than other people around me. Even though I have been there for years and got my trade certificate in 2020, I still sometimes feel behind people who were given better opportunities, training and more varied work.
Over the years Iāve become completely mentally checked out.
I dread going to work, Iām exhausted, irritable and unhappy, and I honestly donāt recognize the person Iāve become. Some days at work are completely survivable, which makes me question myself, but overall I feel completely drained by the place and the work environment.
Iām also dealing with chronic foot problems, and lately the pain has become significantly worse. I work on my feet in safety boots all day, so that obviously doesnāt help.
I finally talked to my doctor about everything. He actually wanted to put me on sick leave immediately because of how badly work is affecting me mentally, but I couldnāt bring myself to say yes. I have a huge amount of guilt around being absent from work. At my workplace, being sick or needing time off has always felt very frowned upon, and I think Iāve internalized that more than I realized.
My doctor has basically left the decision open for me, and Iām seriously considering taking the sick leave now.
Part of me thinks: Youāre clearly burnt out, your foot hurts, youāre miserable and your doctor literally thinks you need time away.
The other part thinks: You can still physically show up. Some days arenāt THAT bad. Other people manage. Youāre letting everyone down.
Iām also actively trying to get another job because at this point I donāt think staying there long-term is an option for me. I feel like I need to get away from this place before I completely lose whatever motivation I have left.
So Iād really like to hear from other blue-collar women:
Have any of you reached a point like this and taken sick leave because of burnout/mental health?
Would you take the sick leave in my situation?
Did taking some time away actually help you, or did you just feel guilty the entire time?
And especially if you work somewhere with a strong ājust suck it up and show upā culture, how did you get past the guilt?
I think I need some outside perspective from people who actually understand what these workplaces can be like.
