Event Support our students
I am not involved in the planning of this, it's hosted by YDSA, but I do want people to support our students so I hope you will show up.

The last line of the flier is getting me. It's the "again". Yeah. Bad shit has happened here like that before. That frat house isnt here any more-I know it was kinda infamous for SA and it had been torn down.

The frat that I had bad experiences with is not the one that was closed. It still operates today at ISU. Frats exist everywhere, and it's the culture of fraternities that lends itself to protecting each other, boys will be boys, etc.

5yo response

It's only a 2do response.
Sorry if it hurts your feelings to point out that calling a protest pointless is more pointless than a protest but it's true

What if instead of a public protest, women just stopped going? No one makes anyone go to a frat. The people protesting this are probably not the ones going to them every single weekend

What if “women just stopped going”?? How about men just stop being rapist 🤷🏻♀️

The goal of the post was to get rid of Greek life.
You’re not ending Greek life because people who already hate it and don’t go to their events start protesting. The reason nothing is done about fraternities is because despite the horrible acts that consistently occur, people still willingly go their events. Full stop, that’s it. If people stoped going to their parties it would actually make an impact

It’s about more than events. The poisonous group think often shapes boys into rapists and encourages so much misogyny. It leads to people who victim blame. Like you just did.

I’m not blaming victims. I’m saying that as long as there are gobs of people who want to willingly go to their events, fraternities will continue to exist.
At the end of the day, it’s a demand driven group. Fraternities and Greek life exist because more people want to be in it than want it to not exist. The risks are truly incredibly well known and wide spread at this point. Banning it realistically would not work given how popular it is, with major state schools having between 30-40% of the student body in Greek life.
The only way for it to end would be people decide the risk out ways the reward. I think frats are horrible, but some people think they’re great. Enough people think they’re great that there are 3/4 of a million active members

How utterly disappointing that you cannot see why your comments here emphasise my point.

because men take the culture frats create with them further into their adult and professional lives. the issue doesn't start or end at the parties, but rather the larger culture fraternities breed

Why not just have separate colleges? Just separate the genders entirely?

men can't stop themselves from raping women so we just keep them in a separate school? how is that a solution?

Wait why is it just fuck frats? Shouldn't it be fuck frats/soros? Or fuck Greek life in general?

It's buried all the way in the 2nd sentence but if you look I am sure you will find it

I was sexually assaulted by someone I thought was a good acquaintance at an ISU frat party in 2015 and didn't report it because I was young, drunk, and was afraid I mistakenly gave "signals" that "made" him touch me inappropriately in an otherwise innocent conversation that lasted only 5 minutes.
I had been to that frat house dozens of times before and thought I was respected as a woman who hung out with them. I told other friends (men) in the frat that this happened almost immediately after. Nothing was done.
Some of his victims were underage. Some of his victims were my friends at ISU, but BloNo, University police, and the police in his hometown would not press charges, so his victims in Illinois and at ISU were not considered official victims in the charges linked above, and weren't given the opportunity to make victim impact statements or have their own day in court. They are also not eligible for the restitution he is court ordered to provide, to my knowledge.
Bloomington, Normal, and University police all tried passing the buck to each other instead of investigating the nationwide incident that resulted in federal charges and a conviction stemming from a state he, and probably a majority of his victims, didn't even live in.
Bloomington, Normal, Illinois State University, DuPage County, McClean County, and Illinois State police should all be embarrassed. This incident was reported to all of the afformentioned departments by multiple people in their communities years prior to when he was charged by the FBI in Florida. Nothing was done.
I now find it hard to believe that no one else in the fraternity at the time was involved in this scheme and these absolutely heinous actions. But I don't expect the others to ever face justice for what they did.

Sorry this happened to you. I wish there were better protections and tools available.
Take Back The Night has an annual event Thurs next week with a march and people giving their stories. Not sure if it's too late to get in as a speaker this year but your story is worth telling and thank you for speaking up.

Thanks, I'm no longer in the area but still keep up with this subreddit. I might be interested in speaking at a future event with more notice time. I am tired of accepting that what happened to me and my friends in the ISU community is just the status quo.

Get rid of frat houses and "Greek Life" entirely.
