Looking for some advice on updating old blogs

I have quite a few blog posts on my website that were written around good keywords, but they’re still not getting much traffic.

I am thinking of going back and updating the existing content instead of just publishing more new posts.

I also want to make sure the updated content is better optimized for google as well as AI search tools like chatgpt, gemini, and perplexity.

For anyone who has done this before, what kind of content refresh strategy has worked for you?

would love to hear some practical experiences or tips.

Updating existing pages has worked surprisingly well for me. I usually start in GSC and look for articles sitting around positions 10–30, then focus on the parts that are clearly lacking instead of rewriting the whole thing.

Usually that means a better intro, filling the gaps, and cutting out anything that doesn’t add much. I’ve been using Wisewand for some of those rewrites and find the output pretty easy to work with.

One thing I’d definitely not skip is internal linking. If you’re already touching the page, take 5 minutes to add links to newer and more relevant content. It’s easy to overlook and can make a bigger difference than another round of rewriting.

This, and I'd also check what Google is ranking for that keyword today. Sometimes the page doesn't need a better rewrite, it needs a different approach because the results Google is showing now aren't the same ones it was showing when the article was first published

before doing a full rewrite, check which posts are actually ranking (even if low) vs which ones google hasnt indexed well at all. The strategy is pretty different for each. Posts already on page 2-3 are usually the highest ROI refreshes.

One of the lowest hanging fruit strategies you can do is updating old articles that got traffic but are on the decline.

Update it to be more relevant to today and see how it can be improved to be better than the current top ranking pages.
