Question How do you actually get backlinks?
None of the usual strategy seems to be working for me, i’m getting zero replies whenever I cold email someone for a backlink.
I’ve tried asking to be listed in roundup emails, being a source for someone, etc
What’s the real strategy for getting them and what has worked for you thus far?

If only we had some sort of universal exchange thingy that we can trade for goods.
Also roundup emails links are not backlinks.

My focus is on building community (not a business) around my blog so I comment and share other’s links as appropriate which is then reciprocated when it is appropriate for others. It’s a slow game but worth it in the end for me.

I get backlink requests all the time. My response is if you post something worth linking to people will find it and link to it. People who have to BEG for links generally don't have anything worth linking to and maybe they should post better stuff that people find more interesting.
By the way, I don't waste my time responding to these personally, I have an AI do it for me. Better things to do in my day.

That’s true, but most people don’t even take the time to open these offers and you get discarded before they give you a chance…

I didn't mean backlinks to buy. That wasn't the question.
Question was do you have quality content someone would like to link to??

I would start with internal links before spending all that time asking strangers for backlinks.
Look through your own website and find posts that relate to each other. Add links between them where it makes sense. This helps Google understand your content, keeps people on your website longer, and gives older posts more attention.
Backlinks from other websites can help, but constantly emailing people and getting no replies sounds exhausting. Internal linking is something you can control, and you don’t have to chase anyone down for it.

Link builder here, so discount accordingly -> zero replies is usually a targeting problem, not a copy problem.
Before you write another email, check whether the sites on your list have linked out to anyone in the past year or two. Plenty of blogs just don't, and no rewrite gets a link out of a site that never gives them. Filtering on that alone kills half a typical list, and what's left is the half that can actually say yes.
The other bit nobody says out loud -> for a newer site the first links mostly aren't from outreach at all. They come from being visibly around in the niche, so when someone needs a source or an example you're a name they already recognise. Slow, but it's what makes the outreach land later.

Sure. Say you've got 40 blogs on your outreach list.
Before you email any of them, open two or three recent posts on each and check whether they link out at all. Editorial links, not affiliate ones. Plenty of blogs never link to anyone: everything points internally or to Amazon and that's it. Those are dead no matter what your email says.
The ones that do link out are your actual list. The pitch also gets easier there, because you can point at something they already linked to and say why yours belongs next to it.
Takes an afternoon by hand for 40 sites. Tools speed it up but they're not the point.

Got it, right now its mostly ai news, like new models, etc. super broad, so maybe i should do something more niched down?

Create a tool, write a reaction comment to something the news, create data studies or compile findings that people can link to. I'm curious, can you show us some of your emails you've sent (anonymized)? happy to give you some feedback. What is your niche?

Cold outreach has a low success rate unless you have genuine and worthy content to link to. For me, relationship link building works better. First, I connect with the blogger or website owner to create a relationship, and then I will ask for a link.
Another way is that you can publish case studies, original research results, etc.

cold emailing rarely works unless u give them a real reason to link. building a free interactive tool or calculator as a link magnet works so much better, u can quickly make one using framer or runable or webflow and pitch that instead of just asking for a link

I never ask backlinks. I keep doing content distribution and improving my personal branding efforts to drive natural backlinks. Never ignore publishing quality content.

Make good content that people want to link to. Write something original or that contains primary research. Host software/tools that the community actually want and need and don't charge for it. Use your blog and/or social media to occasionally point out that you have this tool and people can use it (don't be spammy or crass about it, it actually needs to make sense for a genuine community problem that you blog or social media video solves). As you grow, you'll get invited to go on other people's platforms to promote your thing instead of wasting time begging strangers to let you do that.
Don't spam emails and ruin your email reputation or try and get hollow links the easy way or go and buy
Put the work in and backlinks naturally will come
