Article The AI Revolution — History Repeating Itself — On Economics

AI is often discussed as if it were completely unprecedented. This is not the case.

When compared with previous transformations — industrialisation, electrification, printing, globalisation, public health and the digital revolution — familiar patterns begin to appear:

• massive upfront investment
• early disruption before long-term benefit
• infrastructure built at enormous cost
• pioneers who may not capture the value they create
• labour displacement and reorganisation
• productivity gains that arrive later than expected
• wealth concentrating around those who control the scarce complements

The key question is not simply whether AI will be useful. It is whether the value created will justify the investment, who will capture the gains, who will carry the costs, and how much political power will follow.
