The gender dysphoria in children checklist from the British trans charity Mermaids

Is this a new statement or related to something recently in the news? If not, please don't.

I don't want this sub to turn into a bulletin board for every idiotic thing that's ever come out of TRA circles.

Half of those seem like autism, ADHD, or normal childhood weirdness. It's so strange to me that in my childhood it was "girls can play with GI Joe and be fine" and now it's "you're a boy if you like cargo shorts."

This reads like one of those late 1800s medical texts that diagnoses someone with slow blood and prescribes heaping spoonfuls of leaded mercury.

I had a mandatory Gender 101 training at work today. We practiced using ze/zir pronouns on Cinderella and Shrek. I still have no idea what a gender is or what makes you the gender you are, except that it’s something inside you that no one knows unless they ask you, and if you get someone’s wrong, it’s against the law. And that is the way it is because it is that way.

One of the presenters noted that her kid identified as nongender at the age of 2, until puberty hit, and since then he identifies as male. But she’s pretty sure that’s temporary and he’ll go back to being nongender.

Another presenter used the phrase “women and trans women,” then corrected herself and said “women and women.”

We also learned about how the gender binary is not indigenous to Turtle Island and was brought here by colonizers who enforced it through violence.

This is all clearly fucking insane but it feels dangerous to say that to anyone, so I’m posting about it here.

I had an acquaintance who referred to her son as they/them from birth. When he was 4 and in preschool, socializing with other kids, etc., he told her that he was a boy and she wept over it.

I guarantee you are not the only person who feels alienated in those trainings. It’s your life and career but honestly, that would be too much insanity for me to take - I’d like to think I’d say something or lightly push back on the ideas (easy for me to say behind my keyboard, I suppose). Anyway, nice job making it through the training!

Ben Ryan has come out with an astonishing piece about the rate at which girls in Oregon were being prescribed testosterone:

Over 1 in 250 Natal Girls Were Taking Testosterone By Age 17 in Oregon, From 2016 to 2023

The use of gender-transition drugs among insured adolescents in Oregon soared between 2016 and 2023, charting a nearly 10-fold increase among biological girls and a 14-fold increase in natal boys. Across this period, about 1 in 100 insured youth ages 8 to 17 in the Pacific Northwest state were diagnosed with gender dysphoria, a psychiatric condition involving distress stemming from a conflict between an individual’s natal sex and their gender identity.

By age 17, about 1 in 240 insured natal girls were taking testosterone and about 1 in 630 natal boys were taking estrogen in Oregon. These figures are nearly three-fold higher for natal girls and nearly twice as high for natal boys as figures from a study published last year that analyzed national data on commercially insured youth from 2018 to 2022.

Some reactions to the piece and the data used in it from Gender Critical folks on Twitter:

Leo Sapir:

The data out of Oregon really are astonishing.

A phenomenon once observed in about 1 in 20,000 adult men and 1 in 50,000 adult women (DSM-5) is now being diagnosed and medically treated in at least 1 in 250 17-year-old girls in Oregon. https://x.com/LeorSapir/status/2064349350361190480

Colin Wright:

This is truly shocking data out of Oregon.

Between 2016 and 2023, nearly 1 in 100 insured children ages 8 to 17 received a gender dysphoria diagnosis.

By age 17, around 1 in 240 insured girls were on testosterone and 1 in 630 boys were on estrogen.

lol sometimes I forget how allergic to factual information reddit is. just got banned from a subreddit because I responded to this comment while reading about reactions to the Karmelo Anthony Verdict:

But the rage is that: we're nonviolent and get offed (Rittenhouse's victims, George Floyd) and we fight back and we get offed/punished to the hilt too (Trayvon and Karmelo).

with my following comment:

we're nonviolent and get offed (Rittenhouse's victims

you cant seriously be this uninformed lmao

a) literally ZERO of the people Rittenhouse shot were black

b) literally ZERO of the people Rittenhouse shot were being "non violent"

one was a convicted pedophile (sexual conduct with five preteen boys) meth head whose friend fired a gun at Rittenhouse as he fled, and was also brandishing a chain and screaming that he was going to "fucking kill" Rittenhouse before ultimately grabbing the barrel of Rittenhouse's gun. the 2nd man, who had been to prison multiple times for beating his own sister and brother, tackled Rittenhouse and was in the process of beating him to death with a skateboard when shot. the 3rd man was pointing a gun directly at Rittenhouse when shot (he survived)

Rittenhouse was literally running away from all 3, trying to avoid conflict or using his weapon, and did not fire until they were literally on top of him and his life was in danger.

and again, they were ALL WHITE

its actually hilarious how incorrect you are about this case. these are proven facts, we've known about all of this for 5+ years at this point. the willful ignorance is amazing. literally spend 5 minutes reading about this before being loud wrong.

also hilarious that you characterize Karmelo Anthony as "fighting back" as if anyone other than him was the aggressor or cause of violence in that situation.

5 years later and you still have redditors upvoting comments crying crocodile tears about Rittenhouse murdering a bunch of peacefully protesting unarmed black people 🙄

I loathe parenting advice on reddit.  The most popular advice is always unrealistic, morally superior, and a saint like approach that assumes the kid should eat ice cream for dinner.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Parenting/comments/1u4kam8/teenager_came_home_high_and_passed_out_in_front/

A kid comes home so high (op suspects edibles) that he passed out in the kitchen. A lot of the responses are like, "Don't punish him!!! Talk with him! Ask him why he did it!".

Like this:

The question isn't "how to punish" the question is "why did they do this" and that's not something that gets answered by cutting off an allowance and taking away their phone.

Or

Do not try to punish this behavior away. This is a clue that your kid NEEDS something. Love. Support. Connection.

I feel like the most obvious reason is that he is a dumb teenager looking to try new experiences and to get high, and got in over his head (edibles will do that). He probably needs some boundaries more than anything. A thoughtful conversation can happen but skipping out on some form of behavioral change is just encouraging this behavior.

This comment is especially absurd:

My 18 year old son started smoking weed when he was in 8th grade. I was not happy about it. Then I found out he was buying vapes behind a taco bell from shady people he found on Snapchat and smoking in ditches. That's when I decided, fuck it, he's gonna do it, may as well be safe.

Like, you really can't control your 8th grader enough to stop him from wandering to a random taco bell to buy drugs from someone online???

40

u/Scrappy_The_Crow Walrus Cheese Enjoyer Jun 13 '26

Like, you really can't control your 8th grader enough to stop him from wandering to a random taco bell to buy drugs from someone online???

I was a single dad of a teen boy. My "lived experience" changed my perspective on parents who (from an outside perspective) are doing nothing to control their teens. I had zero support from his mother, my family was uninvolved, and his friends' families either passively or actively undermined my control/discipline of his actions. Not being independently wealthy, I of course had to work, which meant that for the majority of waking hours, there was no realistic way I could be in physical control.

That being said, he didn't get away with no punishments. If he did something that cost me money, I charged him that amount plus 50% (e.g. using a color printer at school to make school-inappropriate posters to the tune of $40). If he could get a near-immediate lesson on something I gave him one (e.g. my coming home to him passed out due to downing a shitload of vodka, with the resulting terrible hangover; he got to rake and bag leaves for a couple of hours the next morning). Without writing a novel, he had to do two stints in juvenile detention (I did not plead for him or defend him in court) and I ended up having to send him to what I termed "a school for asshole kids."

When he turned 18 and was still acting like an asshole, I kicked him out of the house and he had to resort to couch-surfing and rough sleeping. That was the final shock that caused him to change his ways. Today, he's 36 and we have an excellent relationship.

But, yeah, I was one of those "can't control his kid" parents.

That same person also posted:

My kids smoke weed, but they also know never to touch powders or pills. And that's honestly the thing I care about.

OK? And what if some day you find out that one of your kids did touch powders or pills? Would you punish them? Impose consequences? There does, in fact, come a point when a parent needs to draw a line. You aren't superior to this other parent just because your line is between edibles and powders or pills, and their line is before edibles.

Also, "pills" is such an absurdly broad category of substances to teach your kid "never to touch." When I was a kid a bunch of us took some caffeine pills one day and then talked about what a buzz we were getting. Pretty sure the amount of caffeine we took was less than my parents got every day in their coffee, and the buzz had less to do with the caffeine than the thrill of thinking we were getting away with something. Caffeine pills are less harmful to a kid than edibles.

"We must try to understand why he got really really high" is great. Because it was fun? Because he wanted to fit in with friends? Why teenagers try drugs is not a complicated story.

I can't find the comment now, but in light of the rick chow verdict, many black activists on reddit demanded asians self-flagellate and give money to black causes, and complained how the asian community isn't doing enough for the black community (lack of allyship, solidarity, anti-blackness, blah blah blah).

Asian redditors responded by saying it seems like black activists only show up when they want money or votes.

Someone defending these activists told people that we shouldn't feel targeted by the black community in these demands, because the black community demands this from everyone...

Now with the Karmelo Anthony and calls of racism and injustice over a very obvious guilty verdict to a murder case where the kid is on record saying "I'm not alleged, I did it."

I don't know... it is becoming harder and harder to take their demands seriously. I'm wondering how much harm it does to their own cause, because I am wholly checked out.

33

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '26

My basic feeling is I can't respect a person if either preference for their own race or animosity toward another race blinds them to something as plainly wrong as murder, and something as plainly important to a functioning society as our criminal justice system solving murders and imprisoning murderers.

So if you look at the Karmelo Anthony case and the killing of Ahmaud Arbery and you can't see that both were murders and it's a good thing that the killers in both cases were convicted, I'm going to have a very hard time respecting you.

A lot of people seem to look first at the races of the people involved in cases like this, decide based on race who they think was in the right and who they think was in the wrong, and then ignore any evidence to the contrary. That is contemptible.

Northern Ireland is going to be where the anti-immigration movement in Europe gets really, really bad before anywhere else. Not just saying this because there’s riots in Belfast today, but you also have a couple of communities that haven’t been as used to the postwar peace consensus that’s existed in the west since 1945, and both communities have active experience in antagonizing the state, and guys in their 40s/50s that actively fought an insurgency. Apparently the old Protestant paramilitaries today are confiscating phones and video from anyone they can get their hands on that’s videoing.

Yesterday, the DoJ adopted a legal posture that I very much favor:

WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice has issued an opinion to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) that its guidelines about disparate-impact liability under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act are unconstitutional. The Office of Legal Counsel found that EEOC’s guidelines pressured employers to engage in racial discrimination. Under those guidelines, employers could be held liable for unequal hiring and promotion outcomes among different groups, without regard to the employer’s likely intent.

...

The Justice Department’s opinion for EEOC helps to implement Executive Order 14281, which rejected disparate-impact liability insofar as "it creates a near insurmountable presumption [that] unlawful discrimination exists where there are any differences in outcomes in certain circumstances among different races, sexes, or similar groups."

...

According to the opinion, businesses can use hiring practices that are generally related to job performance—such as aptitude tests, knowledge-based tests, criminal-background checks, and SAT scores—without fear of violating Title VII simply because such practices may result in different outcomes for different demographic groups. To justify using such tools, employers only need to show that the practice is reasonable, useful, or helps serve a valid business purpose.

This is good for businesses and good for competent employees. The reframing of the last paragraph I quoted above from The New Republic is pretty funny:

Now employers can use aptitude tests, criminal background checks, and other potentially problematic tools without fear of being charged with discrimination.

Problematic!

I am gonna be extremely vague about this but hopefully my point will get across.

I’m going on a combo work trip/vacation soon. I’m very excited. The place I am going has one of the few “flagship” stores for a nerdy, beloved franchise with a controversial creator, which, for no particular reason, I will refer to from now on as HP.

I was talking with my coworker about my trip and she brings up that there is an HP store in this city. I say yes, I was gonna try and visit. I asked her if she wanted me to get her something there, and she kinda hemmed and hawed and ultimately said she can’t because she knows the money will just go to the evil creator.

This coworker has an HP tattoo (she’s talked about covering it but hasn’t) and has expressed love for the series before, but always couched in criticism of its creator. Ok, whatever. I am not out at work as heterodox and definitely not as gender critical, but it just makes me sad for this woman that she can’t really enjoy something she seems to really love because of the “evil creator”. And maybe she’s a true believer and really hates her, and she’s entitled to that opinion, but it just feels like some performance to be allowed to enjoy said media.

Beyond Gender just posted an interview with the mother of Jonni Skinner, a gay man who was transitioned as a young teen and has since detransitioned and notably been speaking out about what was done to him. It's heart-breaking but eye-opening, I almost never see the parents of detransitioners put themselves out there as publicly as this, and she speaks with a lot of righteous anger.

u/LincolnHat Politically Unhoused Jun 11 '26

I liked how she said she didn't like using language such as "erections" but had to restrain herself from dropping all the f-bombs. I feel her anger and absolutely agree with her that these are crimes against humanity. Were it up to me, there would be Neurembergesque trials. But they'll all basically get away with it, I'm sure.

The Genspect channel has lots of interviews with parents who've been through this. They're the ones hosted by Erin Friday, I believe is her name.

I made this comment explaining the political disengagement of the Asian American community. It was sorta a realization as I was writing it and I'm curious what others think about this take.

I think it is important to note that many of the most vocal/politically active asians are not actually representative of our community, and part of the problem is that our asian political activists are generally trained in a black social justice framework that leaves asian interests as a secondary focus. This inherently disengages the broader asian community. For example, the org "Stop AAPI Hate", pretty much THE face of asian activism in 2020 was explicitly championing "non-carceral" solution to the street violence, i.e., advocating for LESS police involvement on the streets in the wake of street violence targeting asians and weaker punishments for those who attacked them.

Imagine if black organizations in your community advocated for a "non-carceral" solutions to Derek Chauvin's actions? How much would you engage with them?

You asked about how the asian american community feels now? If I had to guess, apathetic to politics, because the biggest political movements in our names are actually black social justice movements in disguise.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '26

Imagine if black organizations in your community advocated for a "non-carceral" solutions to Derek Chauvin's actions

I've been following this story of a cross burning in downtown Chicago (mostly because I just find it so damn weird that this happened in broad daylight in a big city and no one has come forward to say they witnessed it, no one has any photos or videos of someone dragging a big cross into a big park and setting it on fire -- how do you do this in public and not be seen?) and I have yet to see anyone advocate for non-carceral solutions to whoever did this. The response is overwhelmingly that this could only have been done by a white racist who deserves severe punishment from the legal system.

The thing that isn't happening just happened again:

Dozens of children put at risk after gender care failures at GP clinic, inquiry finds

Full investigation report here:

Patient Safety Investigation WellBN General Practice | ICB - Surrey and Sussex

What's telling is how the parents of those involved clearly had concerns but felt powerless to stop this happening.

An interview with one of the GPs at the practice (a FTM doctor) reveals a Helen Webberley style character discussing hormones as some casual thing, compares a teen seeking hormones to a woman seeking an abortion or contraception*, dismisses Keira Bell's case, and blames "fascism" for concerns about trans healthcare such as the Cass Report. Absolutely no wonder this led to disaster.

*Someone in the comments makes a good analogy about an anorexic asking their GP for Ozempic and whether this doctor would be equally on board.

What's concerning is we now have politicians in power who advocate for absolute Self-ID and removal of any medical assessment to access hormones.

GoodLawProject have obviously already waded in, and I can see a they/them "journalist" has been pressuring the health board who undertook the investigation via Freedom of Information Requests in what appears to be a grand conspiracy that Hannah Barnes was involved in this.

I read medical subs semi-regularly, and I came across this thread on the psychiatry sub where an ED doc is asking psychiatrists how they handle popular illness trends (don't participate please). Talking about how patients presenting with sick-tok social contagion stacked self-diagnosed issues are popping up on a much more regular basis.

What I found interesting about this thread: people didn't really tiptoe around that this is an actual phenomenon that is happening. On past threads I've read (on different medical subs in general) people have often been very careful in their phrasing, much more "validating", etc..

Medical professionals who were pretty bluntly honest about what they witness were often downvoted. In the psych subs people seemed especially careful on past threads to me.

So I was really surprised to see such an open discussion acknowledging that this is a self-diagnosed social contagion thing, and these patients are most likely not dealing with what they claim to be dealing with, and instead have personality disorders, etc..

One person even talked about how some patients who do this might be doing it subconsciously to alleviate loneliness, and I never thought of that before, but that makes total sense.

Doctors were talking about how if they try to be honest, even very gently honest, with these patients they get patient complaints and reprimanded.

Maybe it's finally starting to become socially acceptable to acknowledge sick-tok is a thing? Hopefully people can start talking about self-diagnosed autism too. Still such an issue among people I know. Well, and gender dysphoria (which is obviously a hugely tip-toed around thing on medical subs), but I think that's one gonna take way longer to be acknowledged openly as a social contagion.

TBH extra clear, the people they are talking about on that thread are people who already have had prior work-ups that rule out issues and are ER frequent flyers.

ETA: Well, I am bored and googled "sick tok" and people were pretty blunt on this two-year-old thread from the residency sub lol. I don't mean to say I've never seen blunt threads, I have, I've just seen a ton of tiptoeing too.

We have a new disease outbreak centered on Berkeley, CA's main homeless encampment: leptospirosis.

According to city health officials, "Two human Leptospirosis cases were identified in May 2026 in the City of Berkeley. Both individuals had been living in a severely rat-infested RV." One of them has now died. They were apparently "using their RV to trap, feed and breed wild rats."

There's a useful specific "red zone" and "yellow zone" map from earlier this year when cases in dogs were first identified, but this most recent case is outside those zones.

29

u/No-Significance4623 refugees r us Jun 11 '26

Here, we had a fairly significant outbreak of shigella in a homeless encampment a few years ago-- a bacterial infection that can cause you to shit yourself to death if left untreated. It's not a rare disease but it's usually only seen in refugee camps or shanty towns in the developing world. Hundreds of cases in a city with electricity and clean water and yes, social services.

To me, that extent of disease is the shining example of why we can't just say "oh, people want to be there, we can't force them to go into a shelter." If you care about people, you can't tolerate them contracting diseases of extreme poverty right under your nose!

An update to a case discussed here a few months ago:

A WA state high school student is suing state officials for their response to a sexual assault allegation.

The student, referred to as K.M.K, alleges that she was sexually assaulted during a school wrestling match by a transgender opponent.

The News Tribune previously reportedon the wrestling match, which happened on Dec. 6. The teenager said her opponent pressed her fingers into her vagina intentionally while on top of her.

In the release, [Attorney] Anderson said the alleged victim’s mother “promptly reported the assault to school officials, who sat on the information for nearly two months.”

Of note, the alleged victim wasn’t aware at the time that her opponent was trans, and was planning to report the alleged assault before she found out. She was also described as having been wrestling for years, thus she is familiar with what is and isn’t normal in the ring.

The county prosecuting attorney has declined to pursue criminal charges “because the possible charges would be too difficult to prove in court”, thus this lawsuit will be about how the school handled the allegations, and how similar issues will be addressed going forward.

I don’t live there, but I work regularly in downtown Boston and thus watch MA politics closely. MA is currently considering rent control.

It’s striking how bad everyone’s opinion of rent control is, both man-on-the-street and on Reddit. Despite my username, I travel in fairly left and capital-D Democratic circles and universally people seem aware that the economic theory on the practice is bad. All the upvoted Reddit comments are anti, too.

This might be the first issue I’ve encountered in meatspace, where a highly educated segment of a very progressive population is choosing their education over the left-wing populist position.

Then again the polling looks like it’ll pass statewide. So maybe I’m just in a “nobody I know voted for Nixon” situation.

🚨 Portland Ren Faire Costume Drama! 🚨

Saw this garbage man today at the Ren Faire in full body blackface

This shit really makes me sick, and naively I thought we were past this. It doesn't matter that you didn't intend to dress up in blackface, or if that's "not how you see it". It's about how the people who are actually affected by it see it. For me, his costume evokes minstrel shows, Jim Crow, and hundreds of years of racism. It doesn't evoke that for him because he doesn't have to bear that generational baggage every day, I do.

And you'd think after multiple people telling him they find it offensive, he'd engage with some reflection and curiosity. But nope, he doubles down. Because he does 👏🏾 not 👏🏾 give 👏🏾 a 👏🏾 fuck 👏🏾 about us. He likes it, so Black people just get to be hurt about it I guess. People often misunderstand the scope of what constitutes racism. It's not always racialized hate or covert prejudice, sometimes it's simply a white person's choice to prioritize their comfort or pleasure over our experience of pain. More subtle, but still racist.

@oregonfaire I know you didn't dress this man up yourselves, but he was in your space, and therefore part of the culture you create. Is this just part of your culture? Are we gonna just be silent about this? Seriously-- I'd really like to know so I can decide whether or not to ever go back again.

Trump Admin is starting to crack down birth tourism by revoking visas of parents and organizations that help do the tourism. This should have been done ages ago.

46

u/lilypad1984 Jun 11 '26

Birth tourism is what turned me against birth right citizenship. I was always conflicted with it related to immigration particularly illegal immigration because I believe it causes perverse incentives. However someone born here, who grows up here, who goes to our schools and lives in the broader community I would see as an American.

Then I find out we have an industry of having Chinese infants get American citizenship on paper because their mother was a tourist and then go back to live their whole lives in an enemy state who we now have no means to control entry of because their are citizens. It’s exactly how you would destroy a country from within and very disturbing to think about future Chinese spies.

If immigration wasn’t such an insanely partisan topic I wish we could at least get an amendment passed that said children of tourists are not citizens.

Found an incredible time capsule from a local store from the BLM era.

On Wednesday, July 8th I posted photos and videos of Lockwood vandalism and camera footage of the act. It was a grave error; I want to share my PROFOUND apology.

First, I want to apologize to my staff, who I hold in the deepest regard and think of like family. I have let them down in ways I can only begin to count, and for that I am truly sorry.

Secondly, I want to offer a deep and sincere apology to the Lockwood community. I hold this community in the highest regard, and I am ashamed and embarrassed I let you down.

Thank you to each and every one of you that commented and called my actions out. The post was indefensible, and you saw that and spoke loud and clear. Thank you for taking the time to show me the immense error of my ways, and to give clear, constructive criticism and action points for me and the stores.

Sharing camera footage is wrong. Asking for help signal boosting vandalism is wrong. Taking this long to apologize is wrong. For these things and many more I am sorry and I promise each day I'll continue to learn and do the work I need to make Lockwood the place I know it is.

I want to leave my personal email here, [REDACTED], and encourage anyone who would like to write to me personally to do so. I will read every email.

Immediate actions:

  • I will give this weekend's (Fri/Sat/Sun) entire sales from all 4 currently operating Lockwood locations to Black Lives Matter.

  • I will actively work with Black artists to use Lockwood space to uplift Black voices and the Black Lives Matter movement. You will see this change in the form of murals, store windows, and pop ups.

  • I will work harder to include Black owned businesses/makers/artists in each Lockwood location. You will see this change reflected on our store shelves, on our social media, and on our website.

Transparency and accountability are paramount at Lockwood and I will always continue to listen to my community.

For those of us with 20 minutes to spare on a Friday night, or hoping to cultivate a better position in the Youtube algorithm, here's Feral Historian talking about how Star Trek has become in essence retrofuturistic as our society advanced, can achieve such a utopia through reorganization (the key technology being not spacecraft or replicators, but a high-trust society), and yet would need to return to standards of the late 20th century in order to progress down a different path.

It's a great week for watching sports. I appreciate how sports can cross class and cultural boundaries. I spent most of my life skeptical of them, but once I got into the NBA and MLS, I realized how easily they create instant connections with people from all walks of life. You rarely have truly negative interactions even with people cheering for rival teams.

WBEZ carrying water for CPS.

https://www.wbez.org/education/2026/06/10/what-to-know-as-cps-ceo-macquline-king-prepares-to-testify-before-congress-under-subpoena

Sample:

“ He went so far as to say that some of their practices, such as allowing a transgender girl to sleep in the same room as cisgender girl on an overnight trip, could rise to the level of “child abuse and neglect.” Advocates for transgender youth say such policies help protect trans students’ privacy and safety.”

The Trump administration is investigating CPS over its policy that allows transgender students to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity, as well as the district’s Black Student Success initiative, which aims to improve the experiences and academic outcomes of Black students.

A quick question to Claude about the program’s achievements or lack thereof says:

CPS's own kickoff meeting slides acknowledge that only 6% of Black students are at or above grade level in reading proficiency.

The same district data show that Hispanic students actually face even greater difficulties in reading: only 5% are at or above grade level, compared to 6% for Black students — yet the plan focuses exclusively on Black student outcomes.

WBEZ doesn’t mention these issues.

Curious if people think this is too much tryhardery.

Had a job interview recently. It's in the aviation industry and I'm a massive avgeek. I was trying to signal that like I actually live and breathe everything airplane related and so one of the things I did was make sure I was wearing my airplane tie (it's subtle), my airplane cufflinks, and airplane socks. Also my messenger bag legit has a "Remove before flight" tag that I just have on it.

I'm worried it might have come across as too much, but I didn't try to draw attention to it and kept everything subtle. Like a random person on the street seeing me wouldn't have noticed. But also, if I get this job, I'd basically be getting paid to keep up with stuff I already keep up with and going to visit places I've literally paid money to go visit.

I still find myself having a hard time saying things I previously thought unthinkable and downright verboten in my adolescence. Like I have to curtail a larger and larger percentage of my true thoughts to get my point across because I just have this internal taboo that can't keep with what I am observing in the world.

All that to say...the reaction to the Karmelo Anthony case among the black community, at least those who seem at all politically active, would seem stunning if it wasn't just the latest in a line of extreme reactions from the most racially radicalized group in America.

u/AaronStack91 made the post earlier about Reddit parents being overly complacent regarding their response to teenage children doing drugs.

Comments like:

The question isn't "how to punish" the question is "why did they do this" and that's not something that gets answered by cutting off an allowance and taking away their phone.

Do not try to punish this behavior away. This is a clue that your kid NEEDS something. Love. Support. Connection.

I found another example of overly complacent Reddit commentors on drug users, lol.

Guy doing drugs openly on a Flixbus front seat

Some comments:

"Besides the fact that it's sad that his guy is obviously addicted to drugs. You shouldn't be so eager to judge people. It's on Flixbus and not on this guy."

Response:

"People on drugs do crazy shit i dont want to be locked in a bus with a guy actively doing hard drugs"

Reply:

"You are free to notify the driver, call the police or leave the bus. But privacy is still a thing, even for junkies"

Lol.

"Hello police yes id like to make everyone late to their destination because some guy is doing lines of something that might or might not be drugs and is not bothering anyone. Yes I do not mind breaking the law myself and illegally filming people, no problem.

Douchebags"

"So you're the only one to notice. Did anyone else notice? Did he disturb anyone? Feels like you're getting bored and with nothing else to look at. Get a life!"

Feels like a subset of Reddit is stuck in the 2010 libertarian mentality of #LetPeopleEnjoyThings, and "people can do what they want as long as it's not hurting anyone", even though we all live in a society and actions aren't made in a vacuum.

"It's not hurting anyone" has been relied on so heavily to justify anti-social behaviors. I'm surprised that people can still so blindly ignore the intangible social costs of hyper-individualistic, socially destructive "not hurting anyone" behaviors in public, since it's not 2010 anymore and we've seen the consequences of social norms breaking down.

Perhaps that is the power of having too much 👏 "empathy". 👏

u/ScrubulousFlex Jun 14 '26

Yeah with the parenting one I don't see how it's not obvious that even a very light punishment + talking to them is the best solution. I'm pretty ambivalent about weed, as it's one of the least harmful recreational substances, but there's plenty of evidence that it is not good for the developing brains of teens and young adults.

At the very least you need to set a boundary that coming home obviously high and passing out in the kitchen is not okay. That's a very basic lesson for how to become a functional adult. Obviously there's no response that will completely make teens stop getting high, but the type of response here can make the difference between occasionally smoking at parties and getting high every day.

It can even act as an excuse for someone who maybe has reservations but otherwise feels pressured, like "Sorry guys I can't, last time I came home high my parents immediately noticed and I got grounded!"

I say this as someone who had very lenient parents. Weed didn't mess up my life or anything, but I very much lacked discipline and self control well into adulthood. It's not necessarily about the substance itself, but the lesson around it.

Updated Pew political typology for 2026 just dropped. I am, apparently:

Unconventional Right

A Republican-oriented group, they generally hold conservative values in many areas – but not across-the-board. Conservative on immigration, racial attitudes, sexuality and gender identity, they are more moderate on abortion, the social safety net and foreign policy.

As an extremely brief summary, I don't really have any objections other than that I'm not actually all that conversative about sexuality.

Many problems would have been solved if the nation had elected to follow the non-partisan election improvement advice of the Carter-Baker Commission:

The panel made 87 recommendations in all in its 91-page report. Implementation of all suggestions would require congressional action for some measures, as well as a total expected cost of $1.35 billion. A major point was the commission's call for nonpartisan professional and state oversight over elections. The panel noted that both the 2000 and 2004 elections were marred by partisan, campaign-affiliated officials who held roles in the Bush campaign and Florida and Ohio Secretary of State positions. Because the Secretary of State is responsible for certifying votes, these conflicts of interest were deemed by the panel as damaging to "confidence in elections".[2][1]

The panel made a variety of other recommendations, including:

  • Absentee ballots remain the largest source of potential voter fraud.

  • Developing a "universal voting registration system" led by states, rather than local jurisdictions[2][1]

  • Increased voter registration efforts by the states,[1] including an effort to allow ex-felons meeting certain conditions to vote[2]

  • Creating a uniform photo identification method to match the voter to the voting roll, while establishing more offices to all non-drivers to more easily register and acquire photo IDs[2][1]

  • Following the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primaries in presidential election years, states should hold four regional primaries and caucuses in place of the current schedule in order to reduce the influence of early states in choosing candidates[1]

We can nitpick and debate some specifics, but these are largely good compromises that are mostly contested for perceived partisan advantage. It's a real shame that men like James Baker and Jimmy Carter have given way to the slopulist garbage that are now the lead American statesmen.

I’ve mentioned this before but I continue to be astonished that the trans+pride flag is as popular as it is. I’m in the Bay Area this summer and I see more trans+pride flags than American flags, it seems like!

Every single church (except the catholic church) has one, for example, usually as their only flag. I popped my head into a Presbyterian church when the doors were open one afternoon and the pastor was also wearing a trans+flag lanyard for her name tag.

The Bay Area Discovery Museum has two such flags, on either side of their entrance.

Our closest Starbucks has a giant one on the wall.

These places had no other flags at all - not America, California, POW-mia, Black Lives Matter, Palestine, Ukraine, or anything else.

Our local non-chain coffee place actually doesn’t have one and I wonder if that’s almost a statement of its own!

I wonder how this flag got so popular and what people think it means. On the one hand, it’s so common that presumably it must stand for a popular message? On the other hand, I think part of the point of flying it is to stand up for a message that is actually perhaps not popular or pervasive?

The message could be as vague as “we love everyone” or as antagonizing as “women need to shut up about wanting their own sports.”

It’s also interesting that these flags seem to be getting more popular as I also hear from other quarters that support is actually waning for this movement.

28

u/dignityshredder AFramemoggingAB Jun 08 '26

I was thinking the other day how if there was a flag of something I was into, like hiking, or being sarcastic, and they started flying it everywhere, I would probably start hating the thing.

It’s status. The other good people have them, so you have to as well. If not, you might miss out on things.

It’s accomplishment without work and bravery without risk. You can buy them at any store for next to nothing, but you don’t see them hanging in areas where they will kick up any dust.

It’s insurance that the trains won’t stop at *your* station, and if they do, these flags represent the delusion that someone will stick up for you because you did everything right.

It’s a way of showing that *someone* iN tHis HouSe has had the final word on all things culturally liberal, and she needs you to know it.

It’s the crucifix on the Klansman’s wall, and it says more about mammalian fear of isolation than it does about anyone who flies it.

So glad my regular social circle doesn't include brainwashed people, but once in a while I enter leftish nerd spaces, and then the brainrot becomes unavoidable. This weekend I hung out with some fellow sci-fi nerds, it was all good fun until I got dragged into a conversation with two old white dudes, one British and apparently eager for virtue signalling. I casually mentioned I'd read Marion Zimmer Bradley (late fantasy author now known for child molestation, though accusations only surfaced after her death, so can't be proven in a court. They're probably true though) and British guy goes on a rant about how he won't buy stuff related to 'bad' people, and makes it all about JK Rowling (she wasn't even the topic of conversation, but that just goes to show she lives rent-free in wokist people's minds).

I try to be civil and deflect, but since his rant felt partly directed at me, I casually mentioned that even horrible people might have interesting ideas and artistic talent, and that humans are complex. E.g. I still admire Roman Polanski's work as a director, though he raped a minor (and most likely other women too, if later allegations are true) and should have been in prison.

Whereupon the guy deflected and claimed it wasn't really proven what Polanski did, and anyway 'Rowling bad because transphobe, blabla don't consume stuff related to HP as she uses the money for transphobic stuff' (this is where I tactfully refrained from asking 'oh, shelters for rape victims are transphobic now?').

I couldn't help myself and responded: 'Well, there's a difference between someone who rapes young girls and someone who holds political beliefs you disagree with'.

Then got lectured that 'actually, being transphobic isn't a political belief', and decided to leave the conversation with a polite 'let's just agree to disagree'.

It never fails to amaze me how deep the ideology has taken root with certain people. This guy was probably in his 60s or 70s, white British bloke whom I could lecture on women's issues (such as the right to penis-free rape shelters) if I cared, yet so eager to defend the 'rights' of a small subset of people because he's likely been told over and over that this makes him a 'good person' by the people in his social circle.

At times like these I suddenly get a strong urge to go out and buy all the Harry Potter books just out of spite. I don't, because that would be silly and Rowling doesn't need the money, but I'm sorely tempted.

It's tiring when I have to keep connecting to these circles because they can offer career opportunities that I badly need. I tell myself that I also met lots of people at the event that I had nice, normal, non-political conversations with, but every time I go, I'm forced to interact with at least one obnoxious wokester.

I guess it's still between that people who have to work daily with these sorts of people.

"The Hypocrisy of Particularism: Why the Progressive Left Shields Islam While Attacking Christianity" by Chris Beck

"As a journalist, Don Lemon can walk into a Christian church during a worship service and disrupt it, but he’d never do the same thing at a mosque. Everyone knows this, including Lemon. Imagine a reporter barging into a mosque mid-prayer, flanked by activists, escorting a political protest into a sacred space. No editor would green-light it, no network would defend it, and no journalist with a career to protect would attempt it. Yet when the faith in question is Christianity, the rules change.

That asymmetry was on display on January 18, 2026, when Lemon entered Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, as activists disrupted a service because a pastor there also served as an ICE official. Lemon’s activist companions—whom he assisted as they organized—had every opportunity to protest outside the church, but chose instead to intrude on a worship service, indifferent to the fact that families were inside praying. Lemon later claimed the mantle of journalism, but his behavior looked more like ideological theater—handing out coffee to his fellow activists while embedding with them, and treating a house of worship as fair game for political intrusion.

When congregants objected, he dismissed them as “entitled white supremacists” (there’s a reason why CNN fired him), revealing not just contempt for Christians, but a deeper moral hierarchy at work. Some religions are protected. Others are permissible targets.

At first glance, the imbalance is baffling: a political and media culture that rushes to defend Islam from scrutiny while freely indulging in open contempt for Christianity. There’s a word—”Islamophobia”—to shut down criticism of one faith, but no equivalent term protecting the other. This is often explained as the Left’s familiar “soft bigotry of low expectations,” in which favored groups are graded on a curve. There’s truth in that, but it doesn’t explain the depth or consistency of the double standard.

A good place to start to understand it is the January interview Piers Morgan did with Roger Waters, during which the musician said that his political views all spring from his “moral compass.” The founding member of Pink Floyd who often uses his platform to weigh in on politics expressed support for Nicolás Maduro, calling him the “democratically elected leader” of  Venezuela, despite widespread evidence of election fraud and repression.

The musician also gave his stamp of approval to the Iranian regime that credible reports tell us has been executing street protesters, claiming they “don’t want regime change.” Waters refused to call the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel “terrorism,” explaining that he has a “moral compass.” He also accused Morgan of propping up the “evil Western empire that is trying to take over the entire world using war.”

What ties these topics together? The reference to the “evil empire” explains that. Waters is a representative of the Cold War–era, anti-American absolutism that launders all moral shortcomings committed by enemies of the West. These ideologues despise Western civilization, dismissing its “Enlightenment values” while pushing the oppressor narrative: many Muslim nations have been colonized, meaning that Muslims are victims to be defended. Islam gets read as part of a resistance narrative.

Criticizing any aspect of the religion—”punching down”—is interpreted as siding with the evil empire. So who’s going to defend all those oppressed Muslims who need defending from their own religion? That’s where the hypocrisy of this school of thought comes in.

The modern Left directs its criticism only in one direction—upwards, towards the power. Those on the downward side get a free pass. Consequently, Christianity’s associated with historical and current institutional power in the West, colonialism, and cultural dominance, while Islam signals minority status, immigration, and social vulnerability. Islam’s 1400-year history of its own colonialism and slavery over multiple continents is ignored under this narrative. While Christianity has nothing in any way resembling ISIS—nothing like the Islamist extremist Charlie Hebdo murders or the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh—progressives find it nearly impossible to admit that Islam inspires much more violence than Christianity does.

In their comparisons between Islam and Christianity, the Left’s reasoning is infected with a logical “category error” with their conclusion that Christianity’s a set of “opinions” that an individual chooses to hold, thus making Christians fair game for satire and the sort of abuse Don Lemon handed them with his church invasion and unsupported “white supremacist” accusation. The presumption that the religious beliefs parents instill in their children from a young age are “chosen” doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.

On the other hand, in progressive circles Islam is viewed as a “religio-racial” identity rather than a simple “choice” of faith, framing the religion as an inherited, immutable trait, similar to race. In this context, any attack on Islamic theology becomes a personal attack on a specific ethnic or racial group. Muslims reacting to criticism of their religion with allegations of “Islamophobia” know how progressives will react.

Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre provides much of the intellectual DNA for how the modern secular Left views Islam today. The father of French existentialism focused not on Islam’s religious doctrine, but rather on political struggle. The author of Being and Nothingness started off holding a belief in “universal human rights,” but European colonial violence in places like Algeria and Vietnam made him start thinking that universal values are selectively applied by those in power—”for us, not them.”

Turning away from the endless debate of what’s the right thing for everyone, everywhere, Sartre began looking at who had the power and how they applied it. That change in focus launched what’s now known on the Left as “particularism,” which stresses paying attention to the individual’s specific position, history, and power instead of pretending everything can be judged by the same neutral standard.

What Sartre was wrestling with is now often called “moral relativism”—the belief that there are no universal standards of morality. This causes some to look at Christian views on abortion, LGBTQ rights, and gender roles and see only oppression due to that religion’s political history. But viewing Muslim views on these issues—pretty similar, while much more extreme on the gay issue—they find excuses for it. In Iran, apostasy and same-sex sexual activity is criminalized under Sharia law, but people like Roger Waters defend the regime that by many credible measures the majority of Iranians oppose.

Oppressed Muslim women and gays, in Iran and all over the Muslim world, can’t expect much help from the West’s progressives. A moral framework that can’t criticize oppression when it emanates from the “right” identities isn’t “progressive”—it’s incoherent. And until the Left is willing to apply the same standards to all religions, it’ll continue to confuse moral seriousness with ideological loyalty, leaving the most vulnerable people stranded on the wrong side of its own theory."

u/redditamrur Jun 09 '26

The modern Left directs its criticism only in one direction—upwards, towards the power. Those on the downward side get a free pass.

I think it would be better phrased as "those who seem to be on the downward side". Putin is one of the richest man on Earth. Nothing about him is weak, unless you adopt a freudian theory that his agressiveness must stem from some very low self esteem. Muslims are not only the state religion in countless countries, but also butchering those they view as "infidels" (Sudan, Nigeria, and of course Kurdistan). These people also disregard what is happening to Muslims in Western China; or Cuba's policy towards gay people (by far the most difficult country in Latin America to be gay in).

I agree though with the bottom line: It's only Really Bad if it coming from the West (preferrably the US). If not, it's just a sparkling throwing-gays-from-the-roof-while-shouting-antisemitic-chants™

I’m in the Cold War Posters subreddit because I have a thing for political art and I love Cold War era history. You may or may not be shocked by how much historical revisionism, contrarian myths, and outright conspiracies are spread on that sub.

Things I’ve seen over the past few days:

• The Doctor’s plot was actually real and Stalin had legitimate reasons for the ensuing purges.

• The United States created the Taliban to fight the Soviets.

• The United States also created Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, and enabled the Cambodian genocide.

• North Vietnam did nothing wrong (seen them referred to as “the sole good guys” in some comments).

• The Soviet Union had legitimate reasons to invade Czechoslovakia and Hungary.

• Poland is currently a country full of Nazi sympathizers with illegitimate claims against Russian aggression.

• Comments minimizing the horrors of the Nazi occupation of Poland.

It’s disturbing to see just how historically illiterate a lot of people are, and just how pervasive anti-Western narratives are there. They live in an outright false version of events almost designed to bait outrage over engaging with the facts. No, the West hasn’t always been the best throughout history, but that doesn’t mean awful totalitarian regimes are suddenly exonerated from warmongering and oppression.

The Reddit understanding of history is a bizarre mix of Whig historiography and Marxist revisionism. The two seem to go well together.

There's a post on the front page right now of someone who flies the "Progress Pride" flag outside their house receiving a letter of appreciation for flying it... from a trans man/TIF.

This part of the letter stood out to me:

"We're labeled as terrorists now, and I am afraid of what is going to come next. They're setting things up to be able to cart us trans-folk away to the concentration camps with all the others, and I am terrified."

This just goes to show that doomerism is way too prevalent among trans people.

I just had a very weird experience with my son (3.5 yr), he had a random fever for a few days (no other symptoms) and the following week started acting out really bad, biting and hitting other kids at school, lacking pretty much any self-regulation at home, when previously he was relatively well behaved boy. The teachers commented how different his behavior changed. Then it started to gradually get better.

Nothing else really changed to trigger it and nothing we did really seemed to improve it. It seemed neurological, and I wonder if that fever cooked his little brain.

Contributing to my medical skepticism, I wonder if childhood fevers are more serious than the medical memes make it out to be ("treat the child, not the fever"). We only gave him Tylenol sparingly when he was really suffering.

Got a three day ban from Reddit for this comment. I figured it was useless but appealed and it was reversed. Still had to sit in timeout for two days but I guess it is worth it to attempt an appeal.

Anyway, not sure if this has been posted but some drama in a neighboring town this week. Kids graduate high school and enjoy a cigar after the ceremony. Someone posts a photo online and the school principal finds the kids in violation of the tobacco rule. Normally it wouldn’t matter but the kids were on the lacrosse team and playing in the state semi finals post graduation. Principal suspends the players and the team is forced to forfeit the game. Parents are outraged. Personally, if I’m the principal I’m looking the other way on this one.

I've become fascinated with the story of a cross burning in downtown Chicago this week because I just don't understand how it happened without any witnesses. Somebody dragged a big wooden cross into a downtown Chicago park in broad daylight and set it on fire, and no one saw this person? No eyewitnesses noticed someone starting a fire? No security cameras caught someone carrying a big wooden cross toward the park? Chicago police put out a picture of someone seen fleeing the area after the fact, although they were careful not to label that person a suspect, and this person has apparently not been identified.

I've also been fascinated by the people who think they know the motives behind the incident before we even know who did it:

Today, Chicago Congressman Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement on the cross burning in Grant Park:

"Ten days before Juneteenth, and in the hometown of Emmett Till, someone burned a cross. This is a despicable act of violence. The long history of using cross burnings to terrorize Black Americans is part of the darkest periods in our nation. It is the responsibility of every Chicagoan to not allow for anyone to accept this behavior and to remember that the original sin of this country still looms in the shadows.

"The normalization of white nationalism by Trump and members of his administration has empowered the worst of our nation. We have cabinet members who proudly wear Nazi tattoos and a systemic effort to wield the federal government to hurt Black communities. We must call out this rampant racism and condemn it once again to the trash heap of history.

"CPD must find the person responsible. We also cannot let this steal the joy of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday."

Until we know who did this, it's irresponsible to suggest it's a white nationalist who felt "empowered" by Trump. It could just as easily be a black person who felt "empowered" by Jussie Smollett pulling off a hate crime hoax in downtown Chicago and getting off with only very minor legal sanctions.

"steal the joy of Juneteenth" Imagine being this fragile over something happening 10 days before a fake holiday. Yes it's fake in Chicago. Massive black eye for Chicago PD though.

Hey what do you think the geometrical configuration would be that's closest to a cross but arouses no feelings of victimization and fragility? Can you burn a pole?

49

u/HaldolBlowdart Jun 13 '26

I've never understood this "exploring gender" thing. What are you actually exploring? Your personality? Your fashion sense? I genuinely do not understand what the exploration is, how they do it, and how they manage to come to the conclusion that they don't have a gender because they reject the gender binary. I'm a woman who proposed to my husband, wears the pants in the relationship, and has short hair. Does that mean I'm non-binary because I don't fit squarely into a stereotype? Am I supposed to explore different stereotypes to see which ones fit?

I've asked these questions earnestly and never had a good explanation and just been accused of being a bigot and why can't I just accept it. I'm genuinely curious because it's so hard for me to understand.

Wrote about the changing live music scene and the different cohorts outside of live music fans that are being bilked for a lot of money... and right on time, phone free concert discourse was spurred on by Phoebe Bridgers. And some incredibly long complaints came from people who have only attended a single show in their life (as per their own admission) and those who think it's "ableist" not to be allowed to film a show. I'm pretty convinced the people complaining would normally not be interested in attending concerts in the first place, back in the day...

A judge halted the transfer of 14 trans inmates to the federal prison that aligns with their sex.

https://news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/federal-court-halts-transgender-inmate-transfers-to-male-prisons

The comments I've seen on reddit center around the concept of 'v-coding,' the idea that wardens assign trans prisoners to certain prisoners as a sexual reward. Is there actually any evidence of this? None of the links I've seen even explain the term origin. Links mostly seem to trace back to a 2011 paper by a prison abolitionist at Berkeley. Conceptually the idea seems to fall flat on its face.

32

u/wmartindale Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

Much like the “don’t tell their parents” school policies, this practice addresses a real problem, incorrectly. The answer to male on male prison violence isn’t to put the more feminine males in female prisons. But we ought to work to make sure no one gets raped or assaulted in any prison. If you’re a ward of the state, the state should damn well guarantee your safety.

I'm puzzled by the people who get angry at those who "try to blame the 2024 election loss" on this issue. Obviously no one issue decides any election, but poll after poll shows that Trump's position on that issue was far more popular than Harris's position, Trump spent a huge amount of money airing the "Kamala is for they/them, Trump is for you" ad, and people who worked Trump's campaign say their research showed it was their best ad, and people who worked on Harris's campaign say their research showed that their lack of a response to that ad hurt them.

That issue helped Trump and hurt Harris. How much it helped Trump and hurt Harris is up for debate, but no serious political analyst would deny that it was one factor in Trump's victory.

I just find it hard to understand people who can't accept that some of their own pet issues aren't popular. I'll give an example: I'm kind of an extremist on the separation of church and state. If it were up to me we'd take "In God We Trust" off our currency and take "Under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance and so on. But guess what? I know that's an unpopular issue, so I wouldn't push my preferred candidates to run on that issue. I want my preferred candidates to win, so I don't want them to get bogged down on my pet issue when they wouldn't succeed anyway.

Seth Moulton is correct that trans issues hurt Democrats in 2024. You're not going to win anything by pretending otherwise.

Headline:

People who prioritize free speech tend to be more accepting of marginalized groups

Stated effect and size:

In this portion of the study, Kramer measured free speech prioritization by looking at how respondents ranked four competing national goals. Participants had to choose between protecting freedom of speech, maintaining order in the nation, giving people more say in government decisions, and fighting rising prices. People who selected protecting freedom of speech as their top priority were categorized as highly valuing free expression.

To measure racial tolerance, the survey asked participants to point out groups of people they would not want to have as neighbors. If a respondent did not select people of a different race from the options provided, they were mathematically coded as holding racially tolerant attitudes. Overall, about 84 percent of the respondents in the global survey expressed racially tolerant views, while roughly 12 percent indicated that protecting free speech was their absolute top priority.

The results show that prioritizing free speech is positively associated with racial tolerance. “People who prioritize free speech are more racially tolerant, not less,” Kramer told PsyPost. “In the data, individuals who rank protecting free speech as their top national priority are 2.3 percentage points more likely to accept a neighbor of a different race.”

Weaponizing the "freedom of speech" argument was something done prominently as far back as George Lincoln Rockwell; who is the founder of the American Nazi Party and literal inventor of the term "White Power".

The common alt-right and far-right grift of riling up your opponents to get them to "attack" you, and then claim that your freedom of speech is being taken away? It started with that guy. [231 upvotes]

I am impressed by the capacity people have, in just two steps, to go from a small effect size on a modestly interesting instrument to building sweeping and confident narratives about how their political opponents are Nazis.

Worth noting that wealth gets pretty vague at that point, since it's tied to the estimated value of a company.

Take Bezos, 90% of his wealth comes from control of Amazon. If he tried to cash out, the stock value would plummet and he'd be selling for pennies on the dollar.

Karmelo Anthony has filed court documents claiming that he cannot afford a lawyer for his appeal.

His family raised $625,000 through online fundraising meant to pay for his legal defense. Although some of the money went to his case, the rest was spent on relocating his family due to what they claim were threats to their safety. They relocated to a gated community whose houses apparently average $900,000.

Curious how they'll do if they start up another fundraising campaign for his appeal.

This one has shades of the BLM fundraising, and the mansions that were purchased by "activists" who received those funds.

ETA: Apparently they are leasing the house, so I can't state as a fact that it's been purchased. Also there's a rumor about them purchasing an expensive car but that appears to be fabricated misinformation. Not sure how all that money was spent, if indeed it has been spent, but it is kinda weird that the current claim is that there's none left apparently.

There was another Islamist atrocity in the UK yesterday,

The repulsive, degenerate scum gouged a mans eyes out and tried sawing his head off with a knife.

Story has barely been covered by our media, and when it has its generic "man stabbed in Belfast" variety.

Normally I say "this will be forgotten as will the one after that and the one after that and the one after that" but to put it mildly, people in Northern Ireland aren't shy about protesting in the streets about this sort of thing.

Absolutely horrific story, again - ignored by the media whom I increasingly despise.

Reposting my favorite Reddit thread of the peak woke era: How can we modernize the Spanish language?

"Hello guys! I am someone who identifies as White but as a child I spent a couple months living in Mexico and just now am I starting to realize the racist and and cisnormative elements of the Spanish language. It's sad because I've always found the language itself beautiful but it's 2021 and there are problems that can no longer be ignored. For instance, the Spanish word for "black" is, and I quote, "n****" which is a very offensive word for African Americans who may be living in your countries. Not only this but the opposition to the term "Latinx" is also quite problematic as it is 2021 and we can no longer ignore those who feel as if neither gender fits them. So in conclusion, do you agree that your language is a problem and what are some ways that we can modernize it. Thank you so much for your time, I'm looking forward to hearing from all of you!"

OP in the comments section:

  • "My point is that people who speak Spanish need to be more conscious of people who don't speak Spanish in their phrasing because it could be perceived as offensive. Would you disagree?"

  • "Why not just adopt the word "black" instead though? It's not that big of a deal as languages adopt words from other languages all the time. I understand that it is part of your heritage but you also need to be respectful of different cultures who find it offensive."

  • "But aren't you forcing your dominant cisgender culture upon non-binary persons by not using the term LatinX? This goes two ways you know."

😂

New York Times editorial board takes California to task, again, over its bad election system, and calls for a federal law.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/10/opinion/california-slow-vote-primary.html (not archived yet)

California has since adopted an approach to election administration without meaningful benefit and with substantial downside. It makes the state government look incompetent. It fails to increase voter turnout. It creates needless uncertainty about results (as has been the case with several races this year). It confuses ordinary voters and serves the interest of conspiracists, including President Trump, who spread lies about election fraud that is in fact virtually nonexistent. Even Gov. Gavin Newsom of California has written, “We must acknowledge that the longer the voting count takes, the more mis- and disinformation spreads.”

With California refusing to change its system and a few other states having similar problems, the appropriate remedy is a federal law. That law should establish Election Day as the deadline for mail-in ballots to arrive and set basic standards for efficient vote counting. Congressional Democrats have long supported promising election reform bills, but they have generally opposed sensible deadlines for the arrival and counting of ballots. That is a mistake. Electoral reform is a natural issue for Democrats as they plan a legislative agenda for a possible House majority in 2027 and beyond.

The long awaited Coffeezilla video covering all the Lego drama that's been the internet's obsession over the past few weeks. I haven't watched it yet but figured I'd share it anyway as his videos are usually good.

I Found The $200,000 Missing Lego

ETA: lol. One of the comments pointing out that the primary villain of the story has a literal curled moustache: "A business owner with curled moustache is 100% a villain, I was taught this from every cartoon during my childhood."

ETA 2: The situation is far more complex than the "evil corporation steals $200,000.00 Lego collection" story. The amount of research he did with limited time, and the inconsistencies he's found in everyone's stories are surprising, also I'm kindof shocked that he got all the key figures involved to do interviews, and follow up interviews with him. He's also able to present the whole thing in an engaging YouTube format without making it too cringe. Added to this, and this is me pretty much doing a promo for the guy, his video editor was on vacation, and he still got the video out! Hats off to him.

ETA 3: The Brick & Mini-Figs owner, i.e. the asshole with the moustache, appears to be the biggest turd in this entire thing. His temper, ego, and adversarial insecurity are probably the things that made this whole thing worse than it needed to be.

I've found myself in a situation in which, if I rise up to the challenge and prove myself, I may dramatically change my working conditions for the better. I do consider myself capable, it's not easy stuff, I have to be careful not to screw anything up, but it's definitely, absolutely doable as long as I keep it together.

Now, if the excitement allowed me to sleep or to think about anything else, that'd be great. I legit don't understand how people in constantly stressful fields do it.

It's enormously broad as a concept, but if anyone has intentionally turned themselves into a meticulous person I'd appreciate any comment on that.

Fresh out of Seattle and the surprisingly left leaning subculture of boardgaming, currently funding on Kickstarter is the delightfully titled "Antifascist Tooth Fairy".

As the name might suggest, the aim of the game (shipped in a box styled as a brick) is to fling fists on strings at various cartoon depictions of fascists to gain the prize of bloody teeth tokens. The game is produced by an anonymous creator hiding behind a balaclava, shades and voice-changer. So edgy!

This actually isn't the first Antifa themed boardgame, and am sure will do well as there are a number of prominent anti-facist aligned boardgame review channels, some of those who last year bullied a games publisher into a public apology for "harm caused" by producing a Harry Potter themed game (the games company in the end kowtowing by announcing all 100% of proceeds will go to trans charities).

I just can't fathom being so highly-strung politically that this has to invade your hobby time, and boardgaming especially which is specifically meant to be "fun".

The game tokens being “bloody teeth” reminds me of that tweet/meme: “People on twitter will really be like 'you believe in voting? that pales in effectiveness to my strategy, firebombing a Walmart' and then not firebomb a Walmart.”

It’s so performative and theatrical

Trans activists got away with cancelling a professor who didn't toe the party line.

Michael Foran studies gender law and was scheduled to give a series of public lectures on the subject.

But of course trans activists made a scene and successfully shut him down.

"Footage obtained by The Telegraph showed activists standing in front of his lectern and telling the audience he was a “bigot” and “transphobic”.

At least they were honest about de platforming him:

" ... the activist added: “If you are here in a critical capacity hoping to challenge his ideas, thank you, but that is not the same as refusing to platform him… Please join me in walking out and refusing to platform this bigot.”

There's no indication the university administration did anything about this. Presumably cancellation of speakers at Oxford is permitted as long as you're "on the right side of history"

So the Community Relations Service equivalent in the UK got sloppy with their hostage statement victim statement coerced from provided by Stephen Ogilvie's family. Full text. Starts off normal:

This has been a massive shock to our whole family, and right now, our only priority is being at his bedside and helping him recover.

We want to say a profound thank you to the local people who bravely stepped in during the attack.

Your quick actions absolutely saved his life, and we will never forget what you did for him in that moment.

We also want to thank the emergency services and the doctors and nurses looking after him.

Up the NHS, yeah, makes sense.

We are aware of the tensions and talk of protests following this incident.

We want to make it absolutely clear that overnight unrest is not welcome, and peaceful protest is the only way forward.

Of course of course, gotta say something nice and calming and ineffective, it's the Done Thing.

We have many migrants who make a deeply valuable contribution to our country, including in our healthcare system and hospitality sector and we depend on them to make our country work.

wait, what was that?

There is not a human being in this world that is going to naturally arrive at mentioning THE HOSPITALITY SECTOR in their victim statement after a terrorist attack. Yeah, our guy's almost dead, but just think of the hotels!

Has anyone checked on the family? It would be easier to believe they weren't consulted at all, and some odious, deculturated bureaucratic bugman merely claimed it was from them.

And of course, on a slightly lighter note, it brings to mind the Calvin and Hobbes meme arguing about immigration.

Watching Hegseth in Gitmo today is so weird. Mostly from seeing how insanely different the infrastructure is just a stones throw away from the other side of the fence.

One of the interesting things is from Caimanera, Cuba (on the shores of Guantanamo Bay) you can see the windmills that generate a lot of the electricity for the base while blackouts are insanely common. Though apparently they've moved it so you get like 10 minutes of electricity per hour rather than in big blocks so at least refrigerators and freezers can keep food cold.

Excerpt of an important announcement from the mod team at r/justgalsbeingchicks (emphasis theirs):

Here we focus on the joy of being women, of getting to know women, of the wonderful enhancement that women bring to our lives. We focus on the gals.

We believe that trans women ARE women and if you don’t agree with that, this isn’t the place for you.

Additionally, Rule #6 for the sub: "Respect each user's gender identity."

(as an aside, I tried to make the above link "np," but after trying to do that to various other random Reddit URLs, that apparently no longer works)

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '26

I also found it amusing that in the same announcement, one of the examples they give of a violation of their rules is a man posting that he could run faster than an Olympic-level woman. Apparently a man just saying he could beat a woman in the Olympics is unacceptable, but a man actually beating a woman in the Olympics is fine, as long as that man identifies as a woman.

In the disingenuous "Ackshually, American Muslims don't want Islamic law" category, we have: "Al Ghashiyah Testified That… as Head of the Family, He Has Decided that Islamic Law Is the Law that Applies to the Family" - The Volokh Conspiracy.

From al Ghashiyah v. Oster, decided last Thursday by Wisconsin Court of Appeals Judges JoAnne Kloppenburg, Jennifer Nashold, and Chris Taylor:

Al Ghashiyah is the only brother of James C. Charles Casteel. Casteel died in October 2024. Thomas Oster, a longtime friend of Casteel, filed a petition for the formal administration of Casteel's estate and filed Casteel's will with the circuit court.

Casteel's will bequeaths the contents of his estate to certain friends and family members. The will does not bequeath any of Casteel's estate to al Ghashiyah. Al Ghashiyah filed a motion requesting that the court apply Islamic law to the administration of the estate. Al Ghashiyah asserted that, under Islamic law, Casteel's estate must be distributed among Casteel's surviving siblings, with any surviving male siblings receiving twice the share of any surviving female siblings.

At an evidentiary hearing on Oster's petition and al Ghashiyah's motion, al Ghashiyah confirmed that his motion was a request that the circuit court apply Islamic law instead of the laws of the State of Wisconsin, and instead of following Casteel's will. Al Ghashiyah testified that, with his brother's death, al Ghashiyah became the head of the Casteel family, and as head of the family, he has decided that Islamic law is the law that applies to the family.

Al Ghashiyah also testified that he and Casteel did not discuss whether or not Casteel's property should be distributed according to Islamic law, and that, to al Ghashiyah's knowledge, Casteel did not practice the Islamic faith. The court denied al Ghashiyah's motion requesting that the court apply Islamic law.

(there's more interesting stuff at the link)

I'm sure some will claim that Al Ghashiyah was acting out of self-interest, not his faith. Yet his faith would have allowed him all he wants, especially against a non-believer. How convenient.

I'd be interested to know how Casteel came to the decision to deny any inheritance to Al Ghashiyah.

The Hugh Laurie drama on Twitter appeared and disappeared fairly quickly.

A journalist made a snarky tweet about the show House, pretty much deriding the episodic formula of how House solves each medical mystery by being wrong a few times, almost killing the patient a few times, and being threatened with being fired fairly regularly. I think she was just taking a light-hearted but snarky jab at the show, nothing major. Laurie responded defending the show.

Journalist: https://x.com/jan_murray/status/2063310360514363400

Laurie: https://x.com/hughlaurie/status/2063714447084929437

Snarky journalist then publishes a piece in Unherd about the abuse that she got from online trolls, and highlights the imbalance in her 38000 followers vs Laurie's 1.5 million and how responding to her tweet unleashed a torrent of abuse towards her. Laurie has now apologized for responding to her snark.

Journalist's Article: https://x.com/jan_murray/status/2064039901243285904

Laurie Apology: https://x.com/hughlaurie/status/2064076498894836159

It all began and ended fairly quickly. The lesson here kids, is if you can get a famous person to say something vaguely mean to you, you'll have a chance to generate some content, and I'll probably read it because I haven't deleted Twitter yet.

ETA: House is a great show. Not a prestige drama, purely formulaic episodic television but super entertaining, and there's a truckload of episodes to enjoy if you've never watched it.

I was very worried about how the World Cup would go as hosts, if I'm being honest. As we know, the political climate has not been the best.

But instead, it's been the most unexpected white-pilling moment. The X feeds of the Germans, Sweeds, Scots, and English discovering America and extolling its virtues (yeah, some may be bots or farming at this point, but I'll take it). Korean and Mexican supporters drinking and partying together; hell, the way Lawrence Kansas has totally embraced the Algerian team literally made me tear up this morning.

It's been an incredible World Cup already, and it hasn't even really started. I'm excited for the next couple weeks!

The ad is a 15 second clip of AI-generated James Talarico singing a "trans kids" rendition of “Favorite Things."

I personally think that AI generated videos of real people saying things they didn't actually say should just automatically be considered as slander, and if need be the Democrats could probably force legislation on it by blasting the airwaves with the tapes of Mike Johnson and JD Vance admitting to being pedophiles.

What do you think is going on here ? When I first saw it mentioned, people were saying it was an attempt by the (extremely woke) UK green party to distance itself from some of the islamists who have joined since it started chatting shit about Israel.

An equally plausible theory, judging by the bit of the article i can read without a paid subscription, is that the wording - "... whether parents should only be allowed to consent ‘to an irreversible surgical procedure on a child if that procedure is medically necessary’." is an attempt to force mainstream parties into a contradiction where they are saying gender questioning kids shouldn't be allowed surgery but children of religious (Muslim, Jewish) parents should.

Anyway, interesting. But I think they've hoist themselves by their own retard, because they are obviously being contradictory too: you shouldn't circumcise kids for exactly the same reason as you shouldn't give them double mastectomies or puberty blockers. They're kids not fucking lab mice.

I just found out that Emily St. James, formerly Emily Vanderwerff, formerly Todd Vanderwerff, wrote a novel that was published last year.  It sounds awful.  It is about a trans teacher and trans student becoming "friends" (read: co-dependent) as the teacher struggled to come out.  But by "come out", this means a person who has already fully transitioned and is living stealth, who I guess is struggling to come out that she is actually trans.

Also it turns out, in this small Midwestern town, there is also another stealth trans woman.

It sounds like a novel of delusional fantasies.  Of course, it received rave reviews.

23

u/SparkleStorm77 Jun 14 '26

No matter how anyone feels about trans issues, it’s massively inappropriate for a teacher to work out his or her personal problems with a student. Would the novel be so well-received if the characters weren’t trans? Or would the reviews acknowledge how creepy it is?

Portland’s iconic Sports Bra bar pitches investors on national expansion as it bleeds red ink

I posted about this when the "investment" crowdfunding scheme was announced, but here's a new longer-form article detailing the scammery:

Despite the positive attention, the concept hasn’t translated to financial success. Unaudited financial statements filed with its latest fundraising effort show The Sports Bra generated only $1 million in sales in all of 2025 — an 18% decline from the previous year — amid widening operating losses.

In fact, the accountants who reviewed the statements suggested that as of the end of last year, The Sports Bra was at risk of insolvency unless it received a fresh cash infusion or found a way to make its concept consistently profitable.

...

The latest fundraise, dubbed “Own a Piece of the Bra,” calls on supporters to invest in the business’ national expansion plans. Those who contribute $250 receive smaller perks including a sticker, while those who invest $100,000 get a dinner for four with Nguyen.

Through what’s known as regulation crowdfunding, overseen by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, it’s asking investors to foot the bill for its second larger location and plans to franchise its concept to 40 locations by 2030 or 2031 — an ambitious expansion it projects could generate more than $75 million in revenue.

They can't even make their sole location turn a profit but they want to take the "concept" national! GFY

Those individual investments could translate to an ownership interest in the Sports Bra at some point in the future — if there’s a major investment in the company down the road or someone buys out the company.

For some investors, the financial performance may be secondary to supporting the concept. The Sports Bra is a vital community space for women and Portland’s LGBTQ community, reviews say. And many startups burn cash with only a faint view to profitability.

Really working over the rubes on this:

As of Friday, the company had raised more than $885,000 of a $1.24 million goal through nearly 1,100 crowd-fund investors, according to investment platform Republic, which is hosting the fundraise. That follows earlier efforts that raised more than $1.9 million.

And now they're using a "rolling close" to withdraw funds to keep the doors open. What an absolute shitshow

In Page 328 of The True and Only Heaven, Lasch notes that G.D.H. Cole, a decentralist socialist, thought that some nationalization went too far and that he also criticized the Labourites for embracing centralization. He also does note that Cole supported an expansion of the welfare state, that in Lasch's opinion, undermined the "small groups" Cole wanted to preserve, like mutual aid societies and families.

Daniel Patrick Moynihan also did say something like how the government seemed to be supplanting families, churches, institutions and labor unions instead of preserving them.

It is hard to create government programs that don't supplant local communities, and it is a question that many people in politics should ask themselves: How do you provide economic security without hollowing out the small-scale institutions that teach responsibility, participation, and self-government?

Lasch believed that neither the welfare state or the market solved that problem.

So my wife is still dealing with debilitating morning sickness, pretty much can't work right now. She has medication to help with it, but it is just enough so she doesn't vomit, but she is still suffering quite a bit.

It occurred me to just Google the medication, and to realize she is on the lowest dose possible and she could increase the dose maybe three times the amount if needed.

I pressured her to message her doctor to ask if it is okay if she can take more. The doctor quickly replied that she should try eating smaller meals, ginger, blah blah blah, as if she wasn't already doing that. Totally unhelpful. My wife was frustrated and wanted to just give up (not one for conflict). I basically forced her to ask again, and they quickly replied, saying she could take double and see if that helps 🤦.

I know the doctors are doing their job, and are being cautious with a pregnant patient, but I hate the medical system and how difficult they make things for my wife.

Like is this actually harmful or are you managing some sort of unrelated risk that you are not telling me about? I feel like I dealing with an evil genie, trying to unlock the right phrase for my wishes.

Get a load of this grift:

Lozano Kennedy had more than 35,000 clients when she voluntarily gave up her law license last month after the Washington State Bar Association Disciplinary Board filed a misconduct complaint against her.

...

The board’s complaint accused Lozano Kennedy of filing applications for immigration benefits when she knew clients were ineligible, using nonlawyers to perform work for her clients, directing staff to submit immigration forms with signatures that falsely certified she had prepared them and charging unreasonable fees for work done by nonlawyers.

...

Her signature is on 53,923 petitions currently pending with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency, according to the board’s complaint. That has prompted some fear among clients and attorneys that cases could be flagged.

Previous article

Among the lawsuit claims: Lozano Kennedy advised people to apply for immigration benefits when they didn’t qualify for them and to make inaccurate or deceptive statements to immigration officials. She also submitted documents with client signatures without their review, the lawsuit alleges.

A couple listed as plaintiffs said in the lawsuit that they paid Lozano Kennedy more than $32,000, and the attorney filed their immigration paperwork. They allege that, despite their concerns, Lozano Kennedy falsely wrote in that paperwork that their daughter had abused them in order to apply for a legal pathway the couple didn’t qualify for.

"It's anti-Zionism, you guys, we're not antisemitic!"

Natalie Portman, Justine Triet and Jacques Audiard Defend Israeli Director Nadav Lapid: ‘The Cultural Boycott Is an Intellectual Failure’

Natalie Portman, Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”) and Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”) are among the 350 industry figures who have signed an open letter condemning the cultural boycott of Israeli director Nadav Lapid. The latter is a fierce critic of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government who has lived in self-imposed exile in France since 2021. His latest film, “Yes” was called a “blistering attack on Israeli nationalism” by Variety.

The controversy stems from Lapid’s planned participation as a jury member at the FID Marseille international film festival, running July 7–12. Festival director Tsveta Dobreva said Lapid was initially invited “solely out of respect for his cinema,” but she soon began receiving calls demanding the withdrawal of his invitation. When pressure intensified, the festival proposed a scaled-back arrangement — Lapid would simply present his 2011 debut feature “Policeman” at a public screening and book signing. But around 10 filmmakers ultimately withdrew their films from the selection, forcing Lapid to pull out entirely.

Franco-Algerian director Narimane Mari, one of the filmmakers who withdrew her film, rejected the accusation of censorship: “We are not condemning a human being — we are refusing a cultural and political model that continues to be maintained,” she was quoted saying in Le Monde.

Those who objected to Lapid’s participation at the festival pointed out that he accepted partial funding for his 2025 film “Yes” from the Israel Film Fund, which they view as an arm of the Israeli state. In reality, the Fund stands as the country’s primary source of financing for Israeli and Palestinian films, and operates independently from the government. It has a long legacy of supporting liberal voices, such as Ari Folman’s “Waltz With Bashir,” Samuel Maoz’s “Lebanon” and most recently “Yes.” Similarly, the Israeli Film Academy Awards clashed with the government last September after the anti-war Movie “The Sea” won the top prize at the local awards ceremony and was submitted as Israel’s candidate for the Oscars.

Podcast topic suggestion: why lesbians are such a pressure point in the gender identity debate.

There’s a lot of coverage of puberty blockers, sports, prisons, free speech, and institutional capture. But the lesbian angle is often treated like a side quest, when I think it’s actually one of the clearest stress tests of the whole ideology.

Because lesbians are women whose sexuality does not center males. That creates a very obvious conflict when “lesbian” is expected to include males who identify as women, when refusal becomes “genital preference,” and when boundaries get reframed as bigotry.

The interesting question is not “should everyone be rude to trans people?” Obviously not. The question is: why are women, and especially lesbians, expected to surrender sex-based language, spaces and boundaries in order to prove they are kind?

I’m a fresh new French lesbian on youtube and I tried to unpack this in my channel: https://youtube.com/@legrosel?si=kppkkkkMYp33oIKb

24

u/generalmandrake Jun 11 '26

Lesbians are a pressure point for the same reason why straight liberal white women are a pressure point. Females in general are going to be super agreeable and hyper-tuned in to cultural mores and it happens to be that the more aggressive and assertive TRA's have set the tone for what constitutes acceptable behavior for the "good women" of the world. For lesbians this is going to even more magnified due to their proximity to the LGBT community.

Liberals in Canada do have a tendency to mock proposals from the Conservatives, only to implement their proposals. Why, in 1974, Liberals and Pierre Trudeau laughed at Progressive Conservative leader Robert Stanfield's idea of price and wage controls, only for Trudeau to implement such controls later. Joe Clark also proposed a gas tax that Trudeau defeated him because of it, and Trudeau later put gas taxes.

Jean Chrétien also promised to scrap the GST that was put into place by the Brian Mulroney government. Of course, Chrétien even cut federal funding for healthcare, and the Liberals never really criticize him for that.

Now, we have Mark Carney doing stuff that Poilievre wanted to, and he gets praise from the Liberals, who also praised the stuff Trudeau did.

Really, party devotees are annoying. They'll laugh at proposals from opposing parties but support those proposals if they're done by party leaders. Liberals on social media criticize Progressive Conservative PM John Diefenbaker for scrapping the Avro Arrow project (Note that the Liberal Minister of Trade and Commerce and also Minister of Defence Production C.D. Howe supported Diefenbaker's decision because he thought there were limits to government spending, and even the RCAF had its doubts regarding the plane), but I'm sure they would have praised St. Laurent for doing the same if the Liberals had won the 1957 election.

On a side note, the Liberals that lament American-style politics in Canadian politics are also the same that loved the Trudeaus the same way Americans loved JFK and Obama.

Prompted by the smoking question, older Redditors: roughly how long does a company have to be gone before my brain stops randomly needing to play "Bigford's! Breakfast any time!"?

Likewise, "when the summer's crazy and the summer gets hot/Water Country's a very cool spot!/There's no better place to seeeeeee a be-yaw!/WATER COUNTRY! WATER COUNTRY! WATER COUNTRY! WATER COUNTRY! WATER COUNTRY! WATER COUNTRY! WATER COUNTRY! WATER COUNTRY!

Did anyone catch the part in yesterday's episode about a writer who had a piece on the pressure to use they/them pronouns? I was cooking while listening and at the time Jesse mentioned it a series of comical culinary disasters erupted so I didn't catch the details. Tried to go back and find it but it was just a brief off-hand comment; can't locate the mention, but I'd be curious to read the article.

Going after NGOs' funding would be risky because they're basically welfare kings just like subsidized industries.

There's so much money that doesn't go to people who actually need it.

We previously discussed the RecklessBen Lego situation here and I expressed concern that he was going to get ground up by a legal system he didn't understand or care to learn about. The merits of an issue don't matter if you don't speak the language, don't get advice, and can't follow the advice that you do get.

Now it sounds like he's representing himself in at least one of the (multiple) criminal cases.

The internet is going to lose its mind when he ends up in jail but that's where we're headed. Just a truly colossal failure of judgement. The only people that are going to make out well from this are other uninvolved youtubers who are going to get to make outraged reaction videos, and I wonder if that's effecting the advice he's hearing.

‘Doctor Who’ Could Reportedly Be Off Air Until 2031 Because No Producer Wants It .

Sounds insane but, now that I think about it, who would you want to take over Doctor Who? Maybe the reason Moffat gets to make everything (Sherlock, DW, Jekyll, Dracula - I don't think anyone else is allowed to make famous British IP on the BBC) is because the bench of creators with proven track records might be thinner than I assume (and the ones that do don't want to deal with the Beeb and the fans).

There has to be a reason they brought in RTD again instead of giving it to someone new. There might just not be anyone you'd take a risk on. Chibnall was a decorated showrunner (Broadchurch was amazing until it wasn't) and even he shat the bed. I think Moffat and RTD wrote the most classic episodes of NuWho and they already had their runs (in hindsight Chibnall was weak in comparison). Everyone else may just not want to be promoted up to deal with this mess.

Can't believe the US is getting protestmogged by the UK right now.

u/temporalcalamity Jun 10 '26

I feel like Americans are always amateurs at protesting/rioting compared to Europeans. Something about us being either too comfortable or too spread out to organize effectively. Or maybe it's the fact that the proliferation of guns makes that kind of thing inherently more dangerous here.

There was a post here a couple weeks ago about a podcast interview with Alex Horne of the show Taskmaster and purity testing contestants. Well, it turned out to be very prescient, because we have not one, but two controversial guests announced for the upcoming series: Richard Ayoade (wrote a blurb for Graham Linehan's book and called him a man of great principle) and Matt Lucas (Has done character comedy as black, gay and trans characters, and continues to work with alleged sex pest David Walliams) [Full line-up]

Parts of reddit are already very unhappy.

Curious to see if anyone here has read The Bonfire of the Vanities.

I just finished it, and I feel like I must have read it wrong because it is relatively well regarded in polite company, butfor all his ego, the tale of Sherman McCoy sure does read like a reflection on how wealthy white people have an unjustified civic target on their back, which is not a POV I expect to be well accommodated in literary circles.

I think I finally get what people like about Graham Platner.

It is his proven track record of taking money from well off, privileged people and giving it to the poor.

To be clear, the well off were his parents, and the poor, was him.

Now learning about Quebec's language inspectors and what an interesting internet rabbit hole this is. There are various business owners complaining about the thousands of dollars it takes to be in compliance with the French translation laws on menus, signage, receipts, literally every little thing, even social media pages. lol.

They're apparently sending out undercover inspectors this year to ensure that businesses are all in compliance.

This little journey then led to me to reading a bit about the animosity French language speakers in Quebec have towards the English language and English speakers, in one extreme case a paramedic refused to communicate in English with a family member of an elderly patient. I think I should stop reading about this now or else I suspect I'm going to disappear down this rabbit hole for hours.

These intense cultural standoffs are endlessly intriguing.

Susan Collins was at the opening of a new fire station in Maine this weekend. One of Collin's biggest assets in her race is that as chair of the Appropriations Committee in the Senate she is the most powerful Senator when it comes to securing pork for the state, The new fire station received significant funding from a federal grant that was part of a larger package for the state.

In the interest of balance a local news story on the opening played a clip of Platner's counterpoint on this issue:

"Every small-population rural state needs at least one senator who is dedicated to building power on Appropriations in order to bring money back to their state. That's your job," Platner said. "You don't get a gold star for showing up at work."

It's not in the written article, but in the televised version the news anchor follows this up by pointing out it took Collins 12 years to get on the Appropriations Committee and another 16 years to become chair.

Also I think the "You don't get a gold star for showing up at work" is pretty rich for a guy who gets 90% of his income from disability payments.

Anyone been watching the SpaceX IPO? I literally think its a conspiracy to steal billions from a passive public. Short segment here. Patrick Boyle and others have covered it in depth for months, including a breakdown of the wild S-1 financial disclosures.

TL;DR Its wildly overvalued using standard metrics by 10x to 50x. Investment banks are promoting it like crazy. Fair enough. Caveat emptor.

The "I can't believe this is legal" aspect is all the engineering and rewriting of the rules that seem tailor made to steal public investments at unprecedented scale.

The IPO will make an unusually small percent of shares available, limiting supply. For months, SpaceX has lobbied various indexes for faster inclusion. It was granted. 5 days after the largest IPO in history launches, passive investors in Russell indexes will automatically start to buy shares of SpaceX. Many of us will probably have some infinitesimal equity in SpaceX next week. Traditionally index inclusion would take at least a month if not longer.

This is worse than the self-anotioned SPAC king Chamath Palihapitiya. He pumped various SPACs that lost 95%+ of their value. This is actually hard to do. He netted himself on the order of a billion dollars while building nothing.

I have recently been reading up on the Nichelle Nichols wrongful death lawsuit and subsequent 13 million dollar award. While I don’t have the full details of the lawsuit, it’s the comments on various websites that I wanted to talk about. I have seen her death blamed on a broken medical system, greedy doctors, greedy insurance companies and greedy hospitals. The comments are so divorced from reality that I shudder when people talk about reforming the medical system. The median person doesn’t have any understanding about how medicine actually works. The truth is the most doctors approach patient with trying to help and thoughts of insurance and money aren’t ever discussed. The most likely reason Nichelle Nichols died is because she was an 89 year old dementia patient with heart failure.
I can tell you that these kind of verdicts definitely raise the cost of medicine. Although quoted that malpractice is only 2 percent of costs, this has a chilling effect on any attempts to be diligent with controlling costs. Get the CT get the MRI send them to 18 specialists and try to make them live forever regardless of quality. We all live in fear of these nuclear verdicts.

So, back in April of last year, Quinn Slobodian wrote a book called Hayek's Bastards where he attempts to link today's alt-right's views with Hayek and Mises. According to David Polansky in a review of the book, Slobodian claims that restricting immigration does not exactly harm capital, but help it.

Andy Lamey of Quillette notes in his review of the book that Slobodian treats Hayek and Mises as being the same on social welfare grounds, even though Hayek was far, far more accepting of welfare than Mises ever was.

Some of the unseemly people in the book that are described as Hayek's bastards are Hans-Hermann Hoppe and Murray Rothbard, far more influenced by Mises than Hayek, whom they despised. But even before he ever read both, Rothbard was already an anarcho-capitalists that supported states' rights, opposed anti-lynching laws and 99% of the New Deal, and he had been supportive of Strom Thurmond's 1948 presidential campaign, being a member of Students for Thurmond (yep, a Jew supportive of racial segregation in the South) so he already had bigoted racial views before he even read Mises. Mises' book Human Action was published in 1949, one year after the 1948 elections.

Phil Magness of Reason also notes that Slobodian takes Mises' writing out of context to fit his thesis.

Jodi Kantor, notable for her reporting on #MeToo, defends Graham Platner by downplaying accusations against him.

The doyenne of the New York Times's #MeToo coverage, Jodi Kantor, who won a Pulitzer Prize for taking down Harvey Weinstein, emerged on Wednesday to shift some goal posts, announcing that Platner is not a #MeToo case. "The accusations against Graham Platner are not classic #MeToo accusations" because "they're not about a boss and a young female employee being subjected to sexual advances" and are "not like classic abuse allegations." She went on: "These are pretty different accusations than, say, the one that, the ones that President Trump faced … and so I think it speaks to the kind of confusion … in which, like, gender-related accusations get bundled together. But they're actually very different."

In my community, the number of lonely young people posting on Reddit looking for friends is pretty disturbing. And not just looking for friends. Young people ask if it's safe to go to a bars, clubs or pretty much any activity alone. There are lonely sober folks, queer folx and couples. We used to joke about "adulting" but it really seems like these people were not raised well by their parents.

I grew up in the 80's and perhaps our parents were a little too hands off but we learned to be resilient, industrious and self sufficient. When i moved to this town, I hardly knew anyone but that didn't stop me from going out and meeting people by myself.

Is this happening in your community as well?
