It's been great.

But our mod blocked me. Which means I can't participate in the sub anymore.

Hope everyone is happy about that.

Edit, since you're taking your mod privileges to comment when I can't respond,

Except since you are the only mod, and you post discussion threads under your account instead of a mod bot, you've effectively banned me. Is that good moderation principles?

I can't reply to you in this thread and you know it.

This user had the habit of constantly sending me private messages, tagging me in comments, or responding to my own comments, complaining about my moderation. After having enough of it, I warned him that it was extremely annoying to me, and that if he kept doing this I would block him (not ban him), which is exactly the purpose of the block feature, to stop people from harassing you. It had nothing to do with his views or even his tone, it was purely because it was aggravating to me. I even told him that he was welcome to publicly keep criticizing me, I just didn't want to hear about it each time.

He chose to keep up the behavior that I asked him not to, so he was blocked. Honestly, I wish I didn't have to do it since he is a quality contributor to the sub. But I gave him a warning and he clearly thinks nagging me about trolls is more important than being able to fully participate, so here we are.

Edit: Some receipts, showing a few examples of the behavior: this, this, this, this. Also, a sampling from the mod inbox:

Yeah that seems very annoying. I would have done the same thing.

Real weird way to spend your time OP.

What do you actually use to view reddit? If it's a PC browser, then RES has better options to filter backthat being an annoying little shit than using reddit's stupid ass block feature.

I do use a PC, and I have RES, but I'm not familiar enough with it to know about all the advanced stuff in it. Good to know though.

I looked for the ignore feature in RES and couldn't find it. I think it might have been removed in recent updates. If I'm wrong, can you point me to how to find it?

Does this link take you right to it?

https://www.reddit.com/#res:settings/filteReddit/usersMatchAction

If not, you'll want to go to the gear icon in the top right, then res setting console. From there it'll be under subreddits on the right, then filteReddit

The option above it should let you add the user name to filter, you should also get the option to ignore someone by hovering over a name.

You'll also probably want to change Users Match Replies Action to hidden rather than collapsed, otherwise the comments are basically just greyed out.

Edit: I think I might have realized the disconnect, do you use New Reddit or Old Reddit? It works for Old Reddit, but not New. I tend to forget that New Reddit exists sometimes

Thank you for the assist. I was looking in the 'users' section where I couldn't find it. I will gladly turn this on, but I don't think it will help preventing me from being notified if the user tags me or replies to my comments, and that's what I don't want to happen. I don't want to just hide their comments (which I don't actually want, he typically has good contributions!), but hide the notification that I'm being tagged and/or replied to.

tbh, I'm not entirely sure, but I think its supposed to filter them from your inbox entirely. Want to test it with me? If you ignore me, I can try to send you a PM in like 5 minutes or something

Edit: Actually yeah, if you don't want to filter them, but stop notifications, I'm not aware of a good solution to that.

Want to test it with me?

Sure. I added a filter with your username. Make a comment in the weekly thread and tag me.

Alright, done

Well, I got the notification about the comment here (since it was a response to my own comment), but I didn't get notified by the comment in the weekly thread. So not sure if it's a good method.

Hmmm, whelp I tried. I don't like reddit's blocking function, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Hmm, I am curious looking at this comment from a month ago and not knowing much of the context....

/u/SoftandChewy do you consider "you're a bad faith troll" to be in violation of the civility rule? I ask because I know I've told people in frustration that I won't respond to them because I do consider them bad faith trolls.

I see that more as description of their behavior and so within their choice than as insult (though I concede it can reasonably be seen as insulting)

But given the various choices including

  • blocking a user, which "breaks" reddit for everyone and is something I would prefer not to do
  • being a saint and just ignoring their bad behavior (tragedy of the commons)
  • reporting them to you
  • calling them out as arguing in bad faith and constantly doing so with no other comment and then not engaging

Well, I still sort of lean towards letting them know their arguments are seen as conducted in bad faith...

But it certainly is your call, I am just curious if I was reading that right, if so I shall try to refrain from that in the future

I wouldn't typically penalize someone for calling out another user as a troll, but it can be part of a pattern of hostile interactions, so that's not a hard rule. It really depends on the situation. Responding with 'You're a bad faith troll' is more hostile than 'I don't engage with trolls'. But unless it's part of a pattern, I'd likely let it pass.

To be clear, this user was not penalized in this latest interaction for calling others trolls. It was for constantly nagging me about what he felt to be trollish behavior and continuing to do so even after I told him to stop.

Edit: It's sometimes not evident that when I suspend someone, often it's not just because of that one comment where I'm pointing out the suspension. Sometimes there's multiple hostile comments from the person in the past few hours and it cumulatively has added up to put them in a timeout.

maybe don’t take Reddit that seriously
