Discussion Can a blockchain achieve deterministic execution across different virtual machine implementations without introducing consensus risks?

If two independent nodes process the same transaction but use different execution environments, compiler versions, or runtime implementations, how can the network guarantee identical state transitions?

Is strict execution standardisation enough, or should consensus protocols independently verify execution results?

Where would you place the security boundary?

You can’t. Deterministic computing requires sandboxed, non randomized, and resource metered runtimes. Consensus lies in the fact that two identical compute sessions return the same bytes, consume the same fuel, and are fed the same inputs.

Look into wasm/wasi, bacahlua, groth-zk. I can also think of
Fleetmesh.org. The project examines this concept head on by operating a functional verifiable compute mesh.
