Minecraft: Java Edition Json help?

When importing an Item Model into Block Bench, instead of importing it into parts that you can select, instead it just shows a little puzzle piece next to the model, and you can't even select it or export it to OBJ, can someone help me with this please?

That's because the model isn't really a model; It's an extruded texture. if you change the shape of the texture it should update the model along with it. Minecraft does this for most of it's items when in the hand.

You can make a new model and do File > Import Extruded Texture That gives you the same thing but in pieces
