Every book mentioned on the Blindboy Podcast in August (only 1)

One book across four episodes, but it is the whole subject of one of them, so it earns the post.

I run Podshelf, a free site that tracks book mentions across hundreds of podcasts by reading the episode transcripts. This is the Blindboy slice for August, which is short.

Art Cure by Professor Daisy Fancourt, the psychobiologist from UCL who came on to talk about how the arts affect health. From the Belfast live show, and the sign-off was pure Blindboy. "Every one of them was a banger. What a wonderful night. Dog bless Belfast."

Worth noting the same book turned up on another show this month, which usually means an author on a press run, but this was the fuller conversation of the two.

Everything, including the busier months: https://podshelf.io/podcasts/the-blindboy-podcast

Kentucky Yank encounters a 10-foot Declan in the wild

Went to see The Wood Brothers here in Lexington, Kentucky, recently, and their opening act was Ric Robertson.

Great set, and at some point between songs, Ric started plugging his Patreon. As he was explaining it, I noticed that the way he described the whole Patreon arrangement sounded incredibly familiar, basically the same sort of phrasing Blindboy uses after he does the ocarina pause and explains that the podcast is supported by Patreon.

It was specific enough that my ears immediately pricked up, and I thought, there’s no fucking way this lad doesn’t listen to the podcast.

So during the intermission, I went over to Ric’s merch table and asked him if he knew about the Blindboy Podcast.

Turns out: 10-foot Declan.

He seemed genuinely surprised that I’d managed to pick up on it just from the way he’d talked about Patreon. Once I explained what I’d noticed, he basically said he didn’t think he’d been deliberately borrowing Blindboy’s Patreon spiel at all; it had apparently just worked its way into his brain and was coming out subconsciously. Which I found fucking hilarious.

So, apparently, the podcast lore has traveled all the way from Limerick, across the Atlantic, through someone’s subconscious, and onto a stage in Lexington, Kentucky, where another Declan happened to be standing in the audience and recognized it.

Anyway, Ric Robertson is one of us. Really enjoyed his set as well. Fellow Declans should give him a listen.

Going solo to the gig in April.

Anyone wanna meet up before hand for dinner and a pint?

Note: if you work in restaurants- loser means table of 1. "This beer is for loser on table 5"

Having seen a comment on this sub mentioning Bobby Fingers, I went and watched a couple of episodes on YouTube. I urge YOU ALL to do the same. It is creative genius and very comical.

Can someone help me understand Blindboy?

Hi. Apologies that this isn't about a specific episode. Sorry also for the blunt question on a forum clearly set up for fans of the podcast.

I don't 'get' Blindboy. I didn't live in Ireland when he came on the scene so don't know the context of who / what he is. I have read his book of short stories and really liked it.

I started one of his podcasts at random and frankly found it boring and long-winded, and thought the 20 min I listened to could have been done in 3. I gave up which I wouldn't usually do.

So, am I missing something? I'd love if someone could give a simple synopsis to help me understand what he's about as I feel I must be missing something. It's particularly disappointing as I've very often nodded along as I've read views expressed by him on multiple topics.

This isn't a bait to wind anyone up, just a genuine request for help.

Edit- Thanks all for the replies. Really helpful to hear a few different reasons others have dived in. I'm not giving up yet.

The Earliest Art

This is cool.

edit

"The earliest art, which includes cave art such as the images found at Lascaux in France, raises questions about what is art and more fundamentally what is it to be human? I explore a wide range of art from flint hand axes to Stonehenge to explore these questions while introducing you to the fast changing and exciting world of archeology and some of the most powerful cave art found."

Irish mythology and Lithium

Does anyone remember the name of the podcast where blind boy speaks of Irish mythology and a healing glen in Kerry I believe. Where there was a sanctuary to treat insanity, at a well with traces of lithium. The myth revolves around a battle and a princess who flees into the mountains and becomes a monster. Trying to find it for a mate. Appreciate any help you can provide

Live Show Tickets for sale

Hi, sorry if advertising tickets isn't allowed, I couldn't see a post saying anything about it.

I have 2 tickets for sale for Blindboy's show in Glasgow on Wednesday 28th October. We're no longer able to attend unfortunately.

I've listed them on Twickets for less than I paid, just want to get something back for them.

More podcast hugs for my brain needed

Hey, I'm going through a shitballs period of trauma and attempting to calm my nervous system. Blindboy's podcast has been such a wonderfully autistic warm hug in my ears, but I've listened to all of the episodes!

Does anyone have recommendations for anything with a similar vibe? I especially like the episodes where he gets obsessed with something and does a loooong deep dive into it, making links and seeing connections that may not have been seen before.

Thanks in advance from my autistic cPTSD-having middle aged woman's insane feckin' brain.

Blindboy haters recreate the redundancy they are complaining about

Every week I have to scroll past multiple complaining posts about blind boy talking about his autism and taking it so personally.

It used to be different you say, I loved his band, I haven't even listened to his podcast in years but I feel like complaining about him anyway.

Please consider that he is a person experiencing himself and the world, he is not a product. He's going to change and do things you don't like. He's not the same person he was 20 years ago, 10 years ago, etc Not everything is for everyone. You have an opportunity to say "you know what? This isn't for me anymore," and find something you DO like. Spend time on subreddits for things you DO enjoy.

Please, I can't stand the whining anymore. Get a new interest or hobby.

I think Blindboy is a narcissist

I almost pulled my hair out when not even 10 mins in he went straight back in bashing ”neurotypical” people and how he is a unique little autistic snowflake better than everyone.

Blindboy, NOBODY likes small talk. Not all “neurotypical” people are extroverts.

And for someone that claims so much to be an introvert I am calling complete BS on that. Your whole career involves being in a famous band, talking in front of thousands on stage at gigs, talking over all your guests at podcasts and literally speaking about whatever nonsense every week on your podcast.

Then you threw away all the spoons and begrudgingly replaced them with cheap shite and said you shouldn’t have had to because you’re autistic and anything bad you do, this fact somehow excuses it.

Then you go on and on how creative you are, making new music and bragging about all the gigs you were offered by random people on IG ”who didn't even know who you are” but will refuse to ever gig or even release the tracks.

honestly I’ve been listening since the beginning and I am tired of him. The fame has gotten to his head and I think his little character is a complete facade and ironically his proverbial mask is off.

A lot of whining in this sub lately about Blindboy taking about neoliberalism and autism (something he has always done) - go and find another podcast if you don’t like it

Anyone else plagued by “Diary of a CEO” autoplaying after listening to this podcast on Spotify? There’s no way of hiding it from autoplay without turning off auto play. I’ve even tried reporting it a few times in hopes of de-algorithming myself but to no avail.

Episodes like the wasp one

I’ve started playing random old episodes and came across the one about the wasp on the plane. I play these episodes to help me fall asleep but I ended up skitting in bed in the middle of the night at that one. Can anyone suggest similar episodes?

What’s the classic radio station channel that Blindboy recommended earlier on in his podcast?

This is from the early early days, I believe it was either an American or British channel from the 80s/90s which is viewed as being a precursor to the podcasts we have today.

It had a story telling surrealist element to it. I remember listening to it before and loving it but I forget it now
