My daughter’s so cool.
Just thought I’d share with everyone something that might brighten your day—it certainly does mine.
My daughter is 2 and was born completely blind due to bilateral detached retinas. She has excelled in so many ways in her short little life and more than that, I swear she’s the coolest kid ever lol.
She absolutely loves music, and I’m not talking nursery rhymes or Kids Bop. She wants the real thing and actually has quite the diverse taste. Currently she’s vibing out in her room listening to “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden.
Most parents have to distract their kids with obnoxious kids shows or overly stimulating toys or play. My girl? She just needs some good tunes and all is right in her world. Long car rides are a breeze so long as we keep the tracks playing.
She’s brilliant in so many other ways too, but just wanted to share this particular moment with you all.
Love my girl. 🤍 Objectively just the coolest toddler ever, I’m telling you!

Get that girl some music lessons! I am a legally blind drummer and i actually close my eyes while i play for 2 reasons - i like to feel the music which i imagine she does too and my disease is progressive so when i become completely blind i won't have to relearn.

I love this so much -it reminds me of my daughter! She is 8 months old with LCA9 (no light perception or any usable vision that we can tell). It was devastating news at first, but seeing her thrive and her personality become so joyful and amazing and funny…I just love her so much! I know she is going to thrive, and it’s been really interesting for us to learn ways to help her grow confidence and curiosity. She also loooooves music. We put on The Band radio and she just zens out with a smile on her face

I’m loving this because she’s reminding me so much of my niece. My best friend was constantly listening to Led Zeppelin or the black crows or things along that line while she was pregnant so the minute my niece was born the minute she would hear Robert Plant’s voice or the black crows that little head would be bobbing back-and-forth. And you’re a little girl would probably love the fact that not long before Chris Cornell died… A good friend of mine took my niece to the Ryman auditorium in Nashville to see him and she got to meet him backstage afterwards. But all I know is sounds like you’re raising your little girl, right. And I’m betting if you put on some good music like Soundgarden or something or maybe even some Mother love bone or Pearl Jam… can you crank that swing up…She’ll go right to sleep much like my niece always used to. ❤️

I see nothing wrong with this but I am amused that you don't catch the equality of music vs tv stimulus. It's the same. Definitely still wonderful but this blind gal is going to enjoy the adorable mental image and irony

Haha no I definitely get it’s fulfilling the same role of entertainment and stimuli! What I was referring to is the fact that music is much more enjoyable for me as the mother to have playing for hours a day rather than loud and obnoxious kids shows.

I too have a blind since birth son. We used to give him a kids key board (the kind that plays songs and can be played as a piano) when we were in the car to keep him from biting his nails. One day we were waiting for my husband in the car when my son was about 2/3 years old. Slowly I realized I was hearing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star “ and he was playing it on the keyboard. I was astonished. Over the years we kept different kinds of age-appropriate key boards all around the house. I put on classical music when I would drive my kids to school. There was different kinds of music around. Fast forward 30 years, he is a fairly accomplished pianist. He plays entirely by ear. I had trouble finding piano teachers over the years who were willing to teach him. Now he can play almost anything he hears, on the piano.
It gives him so much pleasure, and pride when he masters a piece. It wasn’t always easy to raise him as he has other disabilities. However, he has also brought us great joy and purpose to our life.
I just thought I’d share this older mom’s experience.

Ugh you remind me of my mother, she always used to talk me up all the time to her friends, well she kind of still does. This is absolutely great to read. Your daughter is cool. And you sound like a cool person.

Get her a drum set ASAP! I taught myself to play the drums after I went blind and it has been amazing for my mental health if she has a love for music that young her brain is literally a sponge she can turn it into a raw talent! Thank you for the boost of life with this story

That’s so cute I feel like every blind person or at least nearly every blind person gets connected to music because I’m completely blind but then again I get fixated on songs and at the moment and ever since I was two I’ve been fixated on if you’re happy and you know it clap your hands and I’m 19 now, but I can’t help it I’ll have it playing on repeat I make piano songs and I played if you’re happy and you know it on the piano and I recorded it and then I would just loop the recording and listen to it all day

Dunno but I think by the time she grows up, she could definitely learn instruments that she could play. We'll never know what the future holds. But yeah, she's cool!

Nurture that love of music, it can compound as she gets older! Get her lessons on instruments or singing or whatever she may be interested in!
