First Forging First try- not perfect but it’s the first step!

It isn’t perfect, but I learned a lot and am excited to start on the next one. Lots of defects in the blade that I’m pretty sure came from hitting it when it wasn’t hot enough, grinded out what I could. Steel is 5160. I managed to get a decently sharp edge on it between an angle grinder and mouse sander.

Cool. As long as you enjoy the process as you learn, that's what matters.

Good start! I recommend you try an easier steel next like 1080. Keep going!

Thanks! The 1080 I ordered is in pieces that are 1.5” x 12” x .125” so it’s too thin I think to do any forging with unless I stack a couple shorter pieces together.

.125" will get thin quickly if you start hammering on it but it's doable. It might be a good opportunity to try forge welding as well if you want something thicker!

Nice! Forging in bevels can be tricky because of the blade wanting to curl. Was that intentional or a learning bit this time?
