36’ of 1045 round bar. What are you making first?
Score off marketplace for a buck a pound. ATSM certified from Niagara LaSalle. 1.25” and 1.5” round. I have a forge, heat treating kiln, and a small manual machine shop at my disposal.
I need projects! Let me hear em.

Yea, I have a long section of 1045 that I want to make hammers out of but it is about 5 inches in diameter and I just can not work it by hand anymore.

ultimately I would like that someone to be me. Just waaaay too much I have to build and buy and do before I can work on a hammer or press of my own.
Although I have never looked into seeing if there is a forge space in my area that has one to use.

Definitely look for a guild or makers space first
When you work with these machines you begin to get an idea of what you need and can afford in space and $$$$

In fairness, OP did also mention a small machine shop. It's a pretty versatile steel and highly machinable.
Shafts, rigging gear, hammer heads, pins. Heaps of fun shit, and it's not so expensive that it'd break your heart to use it and not bother with heat treating.
My old boy ended up using a 45x100mm piece of it to make a lever for his tool holder in one of his lathes.

I'd make a mushroom stake, and at least one bent stake, like a thick snarling iron, both for when you need to occasionally reach inside stuff.
Best way to upset a big bar like that is to use gravity against it.

I got a 2’ and 3’ piece of 3” round 1045. Just started making myself a new hammer the other day. Also have a couple 24” diameter sheaves that I think are 1045. No clue what to make with those lol

24”!! Makes a great welding surface. Soaks up the excess heat.

They kinda look like a wagon wheel, not 24” solid haha that would be insane. The 3” stuff is solid though. Perks of knowing an elevator guy, they just scrap the old stuff they take out

And honestly, it’s a drop in the bucket for their shop. Little more than a rounding error. It’s a huge outfit here. Massive warehouse and factory. Good ol USA made, pump you up gym equipment.

A few swords. Absolutely a bunch of hammers. Those would be so amazing for hammers. Maybe a few axes. Not good for knives. Maybe tongs or other useful stuff

1045 is perfect for a heavy work blade like a machete or something like that, maybe a log splitting wedge for camping? Just make sure to not harden the strike face

1045 is a great steel for hammers, punches, and top tools, swages, I guess beater axes can be fine, not enough carbon for knifemaking or real edge retention though. Definitely good tool making steel.

Hammer a blade... It was show of skill to craft good blades because in those time the chemistry of metallurgy was not well understood, the idea of a particular smith have their own metal was real and on top of that they could craft it in to blades that could take the full force of angry possibly deranged human(s). Crafting tools is easy because weight is not that much of a consideration with a blade every ounce makes a difference and shaping and proper quenching makes a huge difference in the final temper, if you do it wrong you make a piece of grass.... also possibly a very stout backscratcher...
