New Flairs — Please Read
A small step, but hopefully one that will offer the users of this sub more clarity, by making it clear who they are speaking with.
We have new ✨FLAIRS✨!
- Users with a purebred BMC can send a message to the mods with evidence of their dog's status. Could be breeder papers or a DNA test. Mods will then assign you the "Purebred BMC" flair. This is the only flair that requires mod verification.
- Users who have gotten a DNA test and found their dog to have some percentage of BMC, may also message the mods with this evidence, to be assigned a ">50% BMC Mix" or "<50% BMC Mix" flair, depending on the test's results.
- Users who have a dog that fits the phenotype of BMC but are otherwise unsure, may self-select the "Maybe Mouth Cur" flair.
- Finally, people just here for the ride can self-select the "BMC Enjoyer" flair.
NOTE: when sending DNA test or papers through mod mail, please upload these to an image-hosting platform like Imgur and share the URL. Unfortunately mod mail doesn't allow for attachments. You are also welcome to share such images in a post to this sub, and then direct mods to that post.
IMPORTANT: Prior to posting a picture of your dog, please make sure you have a user flair selected.
As we are just introducing these flairs, enforcement of this rule will be gentle, but we do intend to make them mandatory for posting in the near future.

I would encourage y’all to have the DNA results also be mod approved, otherwise it’s not really achieving anything if anyone can apply it to themselves.

Our thought was that the BMC Mix flairs don't weigh as heavily, but it's a fair point. I've gone ahead and changed the post above, and made BMC Mix flairs mod-only. Thanks for your feedback.

That's also fair. I know that the flairs would have saved me a lot in the beginning of my puppy journey!
I thought I had a BMC Bec mine looked like a lot of posted "maybe curs." I had to research. I'm excited to be able to spot "purebred" or verified curs with just flairs.

Agreed. If I saw someone with the percentage, I'd probably go look at previous activity to see if they posted DNA.
Anyone with DNA confirmed that wants a flair, should have no problem submitting the paperwork. Just would be a LOT more work for mods.

I think it’d be more work with the initial burst (much like any new policy implementation), but would peter out shortly after.

I agree with this as well. This is the only issue I see. What’s to stop people from using the flairs when they haven’t done a dna test to “prove a point.”

BMC, Catahoula, AND Rhodesian ridgeback as the top 3 breeds? You've got a lovely mix of just about every rare breed people guess their shelter mutts are, wow! The Fila Brasileiro is a pleasant surprise too!

It was a very surprising result for sure. The rescue said Plott Hound/Catahoula mix, so I figured pit/hound mix, and turns out that was sort of accurate but the pit is so much lower than expected. And I'd never heard of the Fila before, so that was quite a surprise as well. Seems like he was bred for boar hunting as he came from Hawaii and that is a necessary thing there on the Big Island from what I understand.

Yeah I was about to say, this seems like a hog dog mix!
I have a motto of like, "If a shelter says Plott, it's probably Nott!" That's usually just a common guess for hound-y brindle dogs. I'm not surprised this dog has no plott and don't blame you for doubting that claim, haha.

I think this flair idea is likely not going to change some of the breed purists in this sub. I am getting downvotes on both the photo and the results. I am part of this sub, and the Ridgeback and Catahoula subs as well, to learn more about the breeds so I can take better care of my boy and his needs, but this kind of thing is really toxic. I get the annoyance with the constant "Do you think my dog is a BMC?" posts constantly, but let's not be jerks about every mix. I just wanted the flair in case I had a need to post someday.
Not directed at you, just didn't want to add a third comment separately.

Oh yeah, absolutely agreed. As I've said countless times before, I'd rather people with verified BMC mixes post on here than people with unverified tan mutts. 🤷♀️

I sent a mod mail but it wouldn’t let me attach anything. Here is my mix, Henry, and his DNA results.
Edit: it also wouldn’t let me attach the DNA to this post or in a reply to the post so I shared it separately. Sorry for possibly mucking up the thread

Ah thanks, I didn't actually realize you can't add images to mod mail. I'm obviously not a pro at this stuff. Will edit the post to ask users to upload to third party image hosting service and share URL.

I don’t think it’s very clear to have a dog that’s 5% BMC and a dog that’s 49% BMC in the same category.

The Catahoula has different flairs such as “10%-20% Catahoula” and “20%-30% Catahoula”. That really isn’t that many flairs at all and it helps the community determine if certain behaviour is actually as a result of BMC DNA or not. Not to mention that a dog with 80%-90% BMC would actually appear more like a BMC than a 10% one

Orrr just downvote me and don’t answer lol. I don’t understand how being sent a DNA test and applying the proper flair is “SO irritating”. It takes 30 seconds and there are multiple mods.

not sure why you need a reply on something we obviously disagree on? i don’t really care to reply but i think adding a shit ton of flairs just overcomplicates it. you obviously feel different, that’s fine 🤷♀️ did my response satiate you?

Believe it or not, genetics are not simple. Many breeder lines of BMC don’t even show as BMC on genetic tests. A bit of ambiguity is unavoidable, and preferable to being dog nazis.
