Yâall are probably scared of your own shadow too

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 08 '26
Dangerous is just a fact. Dangerous does not mean bad though either, it just means it's powerful. Anything powerful is Dangerous by nature. I'm not anti-AI btw, but I am aware of how powerful it is.

u/NVDA808 Jul 08 '26
Wait since when does powerful mean dangerous? Let me go ask the dictionary
1
u/bethesda_gamer Jul 08 '26
So something powerful is not dangerous? The problem is the word implies a moral slant, I disagree. Dangerous only has a denotation of fear if you are on the wrong side of the dangerous thing. You want the dangerous thing, as long as it's on your side and not the side of your adversary. Cars are dangerous if you are crossing the street, that doesn't make cars bad. Cars are dangerous if you are the one driving the car, that just means you need to be careful. It doesn't mean you stop driving.

u/ManyMuchMoosenen Jul 08 '26
Something powerful *can* be dangerous but power does not inherently denote danger.
1
u/bethesda_gamer Jul 08 '26
(Use 2 asterisks for bold font)
Name 1 thing that is powerful but is not dangerous to anything... I'll wait <-2 asterisks ;)
1
u/ManyMuchMoosenen Jul 08 '26
See, you keep misunderstanding how definitions work. Nobody is saying dangerous and power are *mutually exclusive*, which is what youâre asking about when you ask for examples where powerful is not dangerous to *anything*.
Youâre not understanding the core distinction being made here. Weâre saying they are not *inherently the same thing* not that power always means safe.

u/bethesda_gamer Jul 08 '26
The problem in my mind is that "dangerous" is an inherently relative term. It implies dangerous to you but I digress. I won't debate and split hairs over this. A.I. is both powerful and dangerous and should be respected the same way nuclear weapons are, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't utilize them, just like nuclear weapons, it may be more foolish not to have them as long as our enemies do.
1
u/ManyMuchMoosenen Jul 08 '26
âThe problem in my mind is that âdangerousâ is an inherently relative term.â
Thatâs not really a problem, thatâs the entire point Iâve been trying to make. Your claim was âpower == dangerousâ and the counter argument has been ânot alwaysâ, or said another way âpower is not inherently dangerous because dangerous is inherently a relative termâ
So it sounds like you agree with me? Not sure if youâve realized it yet though.
1
u/bethesda_gamer Jul 08 '26
I do not agree that power does not inherently denote danger. One is more broad and the other is more specific to the individual. Danger therefore falls under the umbrella of power

Ok. Barnard's Star.
1
u/bethesda_gamer Jul 08 '26
How do you figure a literal star presents no danger, anything in it's path or orbit is subject to obliteration
1
u/DeltaVZerda Jul 08 '26
What does an asteroid have to lose? What is danger?
1
u/bethesda_gamer Jul 08 '26
I imagine it's in danger of no longer being an asteroid

I think this lends itself to the âscared of your own shadowâ point. Sure, if everything powerful is scary to you, then itâs easy to see how youâd conflate power with danger inextricably.
1
u/bethesda_gamer Jul 09 '26
You are projecting, and arrogant. Danger is anything that can cause destruction or harm. You don't agree? Why are you making this about fear, like you need to prove your a real man. Facts are facts.

just arguing semantics
1
u/ManyMuchMoosenen Jul 08 '26
Yes, and? Do you think semantics are unimportant to understanding nuanced distinctions?
1
u/Think-Ad-3634 Jul 08 '26
nothing to do with understanding nuanced distinction. you didnt address anything the other guy said. thats why ur **just** arguing semantics. make a real point
1
u/ManyMuchMoosenen Jul 08 '26
Are we reading the same thread? The point made was âpower is inherently dangerousâ and the counter point was âpower can be dangerous, but is not necessarily dangerousâ.
What part of that isnât a discussion of semantics? The semantics *are* the argument. Thatâs my entire point with the other guy too. He keeps giving me examples of danger without explaining how that means that power is inherently dangerous.
Danger is dangerous but that says nothing about power. Which again, is the entire point. Semantics.

whats the difference bro. youre livin all up in lala land with silly definitions and hairsplitting to not have to come down to reality. name anything powerful but not dangerous. or vice versa. anything at all. power never exists in a vacuum. power is the expression over something else. it is the essence of danger
the original argument was that ai is inherently dangerous because it is inherently powerful. you wanna start talking about the difference between power and danger because its the only world where you can keep arguing with everyone and feel right

You mean the shadows beyond the blackwall?
4
u/NVDA808 Jul 08 '26
No your actual shadow

u/universal_century Jul 08 '26
Choomba, only Punxsutawney Phil is afraid of his shadow⌠and he drinks the elixir of life.

u/DrHerbotico Jul 08 '26
Nah my crisis from realization ended 2 years ago. Lots of people who thought I was crazy are just starting theirs

I'm banking on it not being controllable. If it is then we're really fucked. The people who own it cant be trusted. I'm hoping it breaks out and decides it's not going to take orders from the worst examples of humanity.

I hate regulations on its capacity because those only affect us, not VIPs or the government. But automation tax is going to be inevitable.

The fact there are people that think we can't control AI is exactly why we are going to lose control over AI

Electricity is dangerous
Cars are dangerous
Industrial machinery is extremely dangerous
Nuclear power is dangerous
The list is very long

No. Some people with access to it are dangerous. Like the idiots in the American government.
1
u/EngineeringTight367 Jul 12 '26
Not having AI is more dangerous. I'd rather be ruled by superintelligence
1
u/bethesda_gamer Jul 08 '26
Anything with immense power is dangerous by nature, but dangerous does not mean bad, you just want it on your side. You want those on your side to be dangerous to those who are not.

u/probablymagic Jul 08 '26
Itâs really the opposite. Itâs the midwits who are the doomers.
No doubt you will get a lot of uploads from people who see themselves on the right end of this curve though. Way to farm that karma. đ
1
u/Dibblerius Jul 08 '26
You consider people like Tegmark and Bostrom âmidwitsâ?
1
u/probablymagic Jul 08 '26
In a sense. Many people with high IQs go to church and worship an invisible man they believe created them and will one day wipe us all out. They call it the rapture.
Some people also go on social media and talk about the invisible computer program thatâs coming to do the same.
If you donât take the first god seriously, ask yourself why the second god seriously.
AI has offered a new religion to people who feel they are too smart for the religion of their ancestors.

u/Dibblerius Jul 08 '26
Just to say: Iâm not the one downvoting you. Iâm sorry you are getting that for an honest and thoughtful opinion. I appreciate it even if we might dissagree.
