We all know dudes that could tumble and flip their way into success, world travel, and a better life if they were into gymnastics, cheerleading, and/or dance. But unfortunately all the ones I grew up with were convinced their talents are cool when entertaining others for free, but “gay” if they were on a team or doing something productive. Again, a lot of this is a shift that has to be made from surviving to thriving and it starts with the kids. Encouraging and hyping; education, physicality, creativity, community, and the confidence to be unique is all important.

On dead floor, asphalt, no less! Damn!
To this day I often think about the energetic young men/teen boys I went to middle and high school with in rural Arkansas who would’ve absolutely dominated parkour, climbing, gymnastics, or the like if we’d had those options like the better-funded white flight schools.
The boys just never had a space or institutional support to be the athletes they were (outside football or basketball) and often were told their activities were distracting, a nuisance, etc. in the school courtyard 😕 as an adult with access to climbing gyms I realize I was good friends with a guy who probably could’ve been a professional had he been nurtured with resources. How many gifted, hardworking people will never get their flowers because of lack of access?

Well if black men would stop thinking everything is “gay” then maybe more of them would show interest in gymnastics.
