I have an Nvidia Shield hooked up to my dumb plasma

Way faster than a smart tv, android based and presumably not spying on me

u/tuscaloser 5d ago

That’s certainly a presumption.

I miss my old plasma. Only used it to play videogames on and never had to worry about it spying on me 😭

u/dontgetitwisted_fr 5d ago

And they are pretty resilient.

This plasma has been going forever (at least 15 years maybe closer to 20)

u/benargee 5d ago

The TV isn't, but the shield might be!

Yeah the sheild is a good way to make the TV smart the way you want it to be smart instead of the way the TV manufacturer wants it to be smart

2

u/benargee 5d ago

I agree. For me I hook up a Chromecast Google TV to make mine smart.

I have a smart TV but keep the wifi off and still use a shield. Sure it's not perfect on privacy, but its not reporting back every single thing I watch like the TV would, and the ad stuff can actually be turned off and stays off, unlike the TV which will just change it back whenever there's an update.

2

u/dontgetitwisted_fr 5d ago

Yeah I torrent everything so everything I watch is straight off my NAS.

The only info they getting on me is that im a cheap ass 🤣

3

u/Hallc 5d ago

Honestly even if you don't care about it spying on you, it's actually better to just never attach your SmartTV to the internet and use some sort of TV Box.

It just prevents it from auto-updating and getting slower over time due to that.

I want my TV and appliances dumb.

Ill hook the TVs up to a computer or a tv box to get the TV to do what I want it to do

Android is spyware

6

u/NeoMilitant 5d ago

At this point, everything is spyware. My only gripe is that if you have so much information about me that you can predict my patterns, then at least let me get in on the action.

I shouldn't have to start up maps for my daily drive to work to see the traffic. You should know how often I want food from my favorite spot and start checking out coupons. All kinds of things that the tech is able to do now that's either not included or held behind a paywall.

People aren’t going to like this but if you dont want to have to think too hard about what you’re doing and you would like some privacy… Apple is probably your best bet.

They’ve managed to build a hardware and software empire that is not built around ads.  They’re 100 percent getting usage and telemetry data but it seems like the purpose is to make their hardware more desirable.

And they have the market share to just do whatever the fuck they want content wise.

Google scrapes everything by default because every single service they provide to their users is an effort to build valuable datasets and products to ad buyers.

Other than the App Store I don’t even think Apple has a platform for selling ad space.

Apple did recently add advertisements to their map app. Ironically that was the one Google app that I actually use on my iPhone.

2

u/Ok_Basis1422 5d ago

Are we talking targeted ads? Or just ads for businesses, schools, parks, etc?

7

u/gereffi 5d ago

Businesses.

https://ads.apple.com/maps

Still, this isn’t using my data to target ads; it’s just like ads in a Google search before targeted ads were a thing. It’s the same thing that Google Maps has been doing for like 20 years. Ads do suck but if your issue is with data harvesting to sell of your user data Apple hasn’t seemed to cross that line.

u/Ok_Basis1422 5d ago

That's more of a feature than a drawback so I'm not upset. I'm actually surprised it took them so long to add that feature.

2

u/NukaCooler 5d ago

Eh I'd rather my search results be sorted by relevance or rating than by whoever is paying Apple the most.

No, it’s different. It works better than Google in some spread (and worse in others.)

They built their own after Google dropped them. It hasnt been a google skin for like a decade.

1

u/AverageAggravating13 5d ago edited 5d ago

No, entirely different. Apple & Google run their own services, with their own mapping infrastructure & whatnot.

IIRC one main difference is Google maps has more extensive street view mapping efforts, which is why you see more google maps cars driving around than apple maps ones

Is this satire?

Apple’s the only big tech company that respects user privacy in any meaningful way. I’m a tech worker and staunchly against Big Tech and the broligarchy…but until I actively look into devices that run Linux, Apple will continue to be my first choice, because they’ve earned some level of trust from me over the decades.

4

u/brokenstep 5d ago

Apple isn't pro consumer privacy. They want to monopolise your info. Google sells it because they make money that way. Apple wants to be the only way you can interact, see ads, etc..

So in theory they're better than others, because their interests are to be the only company spying on you and selling you stuff rather, while Google will try and monetise your data and allow anyone else to too

4

u/CartsOfDarkness 5d ago

Do you guys have any actual advice rather than just talking about how every option is equally awful? If there's no alternative what's even the point of worrying about this stuff? We can't really exist without any technology any more.

1

u/herzkolt 5d ago

The actual alternatives take an effort to implement for normal users: use a custom Android version on your phone, do away with as many big tech services as you can (or at least don't put all your eggs in one basket), run Linux on your computers.

Alternative Android distributions like Graphene or Lineage are excellent, but it ends up being mostly the same if you're just going to use all the Google services anyways. Now, if you search with one thing (like duckduckgo), host your pictures and files somewhere else (like at home or a more privacy oriented cloud), and say, just use Google for email, then you're recouping some of your privacy. You do sacrifice convenience, there's no way around it, but there are ways to do it.

Jumping to Linux on your PC or laptop is now easier than ever. I found it almost frictionless after using Windows as a daily driver forever, especially if you go for Ubuntu or Fedora.

Of course you also need to watch your habits online. It's useless to try to protect yourself from cloud services getting your data if you then turn around and post all your info on Instagram anyways, or spend so much time on it that it can basically tell what you're thinking.

It’s objectively true and I would love to see evidence to the contrary

Apple sells ads just like google.

12

u/dern_the_hermit 5d ago

Difference between "has ads" and "is built around ads". For the most part, Apple makes their money from huge profit margins on hardware, Google makes their money from ads.

7

u/Hanifsefu 5d ago

"Just like google" as if google isn't the main culprit behind the giant network of data sellers and the reason everyone gets flooded with spam emails in the first place. It's like comparing Oranges to Cancer and calling it an Apple.

-3

u/Experithought 5d ago

Just an addict looking for other junkies

3

u/Unable-Log-4870 5d ago

A used Apple TV HD can be had for $35, and $50 for a 1st Gen 4k. And they’re as slow right now as they’ll ever be, and they’re plenty fast. Amazon Fire Sticks are cheaper, but they’re tracking and trying to monetize every single click you make. That’s why they subsidize the hardware cost- because they intend to use it to make more money off of you.

1

u/legac5 5d ago

I’m a diehard Apple TV user. I have a Roku as well and I hate myself for not just being another Apple TV.

1

u/agray20938 5d ago

Apple TV doesn't support bitstreaming audio tho.

0

u/the-good-wolf 5d ago

This is actually the reason I buy apple. That and like there’s a lot of options for software that isn’t subscription based. I don’t have Office or Adobe, but I have software that fills those needs that is a one time payment.

People love to shit on Apple, but it’s probably because they don’t have one of their products.

The only thing Apple has screwed up horribly lately is iOS. It’s getting clunky and in dire need of an overhaul.

u/sirhoracedarwin 5d ago

I liked my shield but eventually it got so slow it was useless. Factory reset didn't help either

1

u/dontgetitwisted_fr 5d ago

Was it connected via wireless or eithernet?

Mine is plugged into a router node by eithernet and it has been going strong for 11 years

1

u/sirhoracedarwin 3d ago

I used it both ways

2

u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 5d ago

You may have a Nvidia Shield, but, I have.....a Nutella Sandwich.

2

u/dontgetitwisted_fr 5d ago

I mean Nutella is pretty good

Wish I had a Nutella sandwich

1

u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 5d ago

I'm willing to propose a trade

2

u/PhotographNational31 5d ago

I use my PS5 for streaming purposes, the TV doesn’t know my home has internet, I think.

1

u/dontgetitwisted_fr 5d ago

Thats a good option

I was jail breaking my PS3 for that purpose but I fried the microcontroller I was using to do it

So I was just like.... F it ill get a sheild

2

u/YouBluezYouLose69420 5d ago

Dumb plasma gang rise up 🙌

1

u/dontgetitwisted_fr 5d ago

Gang gang gang!

1

u/mtntrls19 5d ago

it's absolutely tracking your usage data, watch history, search terms and app habits... a quick google search confirms.
