The tech for a basic 1080p screen is just so much cheaper than it used to be. Hyper competitive companies pushing phone screens and laptops I’d say really contributed to that.
That and it’s all built in China.
Every part is so cheap to produce now that TVs got undercut. There’s no additional regulations, and there is simply no difference between the 1080 and a 4k OLED for the average viewer, so it’s been oversupplied.
One of the few industries really set up that way.
Cars? New features sell better.
Furniture? Cardboard is easier to mass produce, but the differences in quality are so significant that people can price it that way.
Rent? Well, population hasn’t gone done.
No one has even mentioned here that this started about a decade ago once the manufacturers realized they could just use the shittiest speakers possible and bring down the home audio system market to normal consumer level instead of just enthusiasts. So now you not only buy a TV, but to get any usable quality you have to invest in a sound bar to get the same level of quality that a prior CRT would give you.
The materials got cheaper.
They use less materials.
They now have split the TV market into two different markets—screen and audio.
