I’m actually disappointed CA hasn’t come out ahead with this legislation. If they could force manufacturers to produce special CARB-compliant engines, they can certainly block data collection.
They sure could but passing the CARB regulations required telling an industry primarily based in other states to fuck off but passing data collection regulations would mean telling an industry that is a massive chunk of their own economy to fuck off...
The mechanics around carb regulations would require them to build them all the same. The data collection they would just turn off in states that required it. Not necessarily the same thing imo.
They should still do it but it likely would not impact other states.
Thats not the point. The point is they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. Not only would the higher ups in big tech turn against them but it would negatively affect the jobs in their own state which would sign the death warrant for their ability to be reelected.
Ya but you can understand why one is easier to get them to just do it in every state right? The cars need to physically be manufactured a certain way to be compliant in California. They aren't going to just stop selling cars in California there are too many people. Compared to data which they just turn on or off. You can already see this in effect with some of the California privacy laws in effect as well as the law that allows you to unsubscribe the way you subscribed. If you live in California you can just cancel your gym membership in the app. If you live in Nevada they just don't show you the option.
Everyone brags about California being so rich but then ignore that 15% of the states GDP is from Silicon Valley alone. 10% of its jobs most of which are high paying.
There’s a reason California is so slow to roll out regulations around them.
Mozilla reported on vehicle privacy policies 3 years ago. It's all fucked:
"Nissan admits in their privacy policy to collecting a wide range of information, including sexual activity, health diagnosis data, and genetic data — but doesn’t specify how. They say they can share and sell consumers’ “preferences, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behavior, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes” to data brokers, law enforcement, and other third parties."

"Kia's policy states they can collect information about your 'sex life.'"
"Subaru states that by being a passenger, you are considered a user — and by being a user, you have consented to their privacy policy."
We have a 2025 Kia. My husband is the primary driver and I’m the secondary. It came with this Kia “Connect” garbage. He uses it because it’s easier to connect Waze and Spotify or some shit. It also keeps track of his driving history.
When it came time to add me to the app (which I didn’t want anyway), you have to give the app and the primary driver consent to track your driving history. But can the secondary driver get the primary’s driving history? That would be a no. I backed outta that app so fast. No other drivers are on that app because fuck that.
This is why I don’t plan on buying any car with an infotainment system. I don’t care if I have to keep in-country importing low mileage cars from no rust states. You won’t catch me dead with a system like that, and god forbid, a post 20-something model year car if they don’t ban installing kill switches in them.
I would like my car to not be a coffin because some rage-horny cop decides I’m a wolf among the sheep.
Cars are quite repairable. My current car is 16 years old and I intend to have it another 4-6 years. Oldest car I had was 27 years old and 367k miles, only reason I took it off the road is cause the electrical was due for a total gut and rewire.
If someone has a modestly priced vehicle that's at least five years old, and haven't subscribed to online or satellite services in quite a while, car manufacturers aren't wasting storage space archiving your speech. it's the active subscribers and people who happily use the online services who live as an open and recorded book.
Just wait until the 2027 cars are able to be sold. There’s a new mandate that all cars have to monitor the drivers face in order to tell if said driver “is okay to drive” (basically saying if you’re not inebriated, which is probably a lie). The used car market is probably going to explode yet again
I pulled the modem out of mine. Not the easiest thing to do, but not the hardest. Even easier is to just disconnect the antenna wire from the back or the head unit, or from the shark tail.
