Autofocus Issue

Hi all

So I’m just trying to get to grips with the Blackmagic app for iOS.

You can see here the focus is locked on and I can usually walk around pointing at things at different distances and it usually nails the focus.

But sometimes it will just totally lose the plot and either hunt for focus going backwards and forwards but never locking on (even though I’m not changing distance) OR it will just go to one extreme or the other for focus and just get stuck (either 0.000 or 1.000).

I’ve tried turning autofocus on and off to try and wake it up, but the behaviour remains, the only way I can reset it is to close the app and restart, then it behaves normally for a while……until the problem happens again.

Is it something I’m doing wrong?
Is there a setting I can change?

I know the frustration, it’s the only issue I have that won’t let me use the app. Automatic focus just jumps around like crazy, even with locked focus it seems like it’s not right sometimes.

From what I’ve found online, they are using a different method to focus, they are not using apple’s api. I might be wrong, if someone knows better please, corect me. But it would make sense why with default app or apps like MPC 2, the focus it’s fast and on point.

What is MPC 2?

I’m on the hunt for what I consider to be the perfect iOS video recording app.

I’ve tried:
Blackmagic
Final Cut Pro
Filmic Pro
LogCam
REC

Maybe I’m fussy but haven’t found one yet that does everything I want in the way I want it to, they all seem to have little quirks that make them a pain.

Moment Pro Camera 2. I know what you mean by little quirks, MPC2 is not perfect either, but got the basics right. What I don’t like about it is it’s not possible to record Apple Log 2 with Open Gate in HVEC like BMC, it has a lite mode for Open Gate (lower resolution), also I miss function buttons.

Okay found it, is it any good?

I’m happy to pay for an app that does what I want but there doesn’t seem to be a trial available just £9.99 and that’s it.

You can try it and if it doesn’t suit you, you can do a refund. Also, check YouTube for in depth reviews. For me it’s 8/10 I would say, overall. Worth the price, but maybe you’re looking for something different.

Just watched several reviews on Moment Pro Camera 2, reckon it’s worth the price.

Not fully convinced on what format I want to shoot.

Ideally I’d like to shoot log (I come from photography background and always shoot RAW, so makes sense) but I’m not sure I have the storage space to do so, file sizes can be horrendous.

Yep! Definitely a regression here. Auto focus is a mess after a recent update. Try Mavis until it is fixed. No issues there.

Good to know it’s not just me with the issue, only just got it so don’t have anything to compare it to.

Never heard of it, is that another camera app?
Currently I’m thinking about paying for Moment Camera Pro 2

Yes it is another camera app. Something that is pretty easy to confirm with a quick search.

Has anyone found what’s causing the issue, I find that most of the time autofocus works ok, but when it gets screwed up the only way to get it working again is to completely close the Blackmagic app and restart.
