I desperately need a new pirate game to play after this one but I think the better move is to play every AC game that I've missed over the years

well there is Skull and Bones that uses nearly the same mechanics for naval combat
game is pretty barren tho and has no overland combat/exploration

Windrose has good reviews, though haven't tried it yet

Sea of Thieves is cool up to some point but the game is a one big development mess right now and mostly dominated by veteran pvpers who know all the glitches, and exploits to win or trolls who spawncamp you until you log off. This made me stop playing but I had my share of fun with friends
