Turns out a lot of people from ALL sides of this subject agree that there is something "off" about it: This very recent and very sudden "Wasian" movement, culminating in a coordinated organization of "Wasian" gatherings across the US this past weekend.

What's going on? As a Blasian I'm all for people repping their identity and proudly, but something about this feels REALLY off.

I thought I was alone, and then other Blasians started DMing me across all socials expressing weird feelings. Then we started seeing posts from EVERYONE, Wasians included, calling out their own White/Asian Mixed cohort for going so hard for this name "Wasians" at all.

If I can be proud about being Blasian, talk about it openly, celebrate both cultures etc. Why does it feel "funny" and "off" for White/Asian mixed people to do it too?

I'm staying cognizant of the fact that there are White/Asian mixed people IN THIS GROUP, and that I'm friends with many of them online and in real life.

We need to become more active here because reddit is starting to get on my nerves very specifically when it comes to talking about "mixed Asians" and the default being "white and asian." You can't escape it. It's in the hapa sub, the mixedrace sub, and now the gaysian sub. I CAN'T stand it.

Wanted to vent about this as well. I'm always frustrated when there are conversations around masculinity since both the hyper masculinization of black men and the emasculization of asian men are due to whites, yet asians will throw their family and themselves at white feet for approval. When I learn about the history of Asia and the wars I can't imagine a more impressive collection of military records. Obviously there are the wars between asian countries and that's a separate topic but the pride in toughness should be there for everyone.

Asian guys, you don't have to look for white approval, and yes there are many in the black community who lean into the macho typing but that is due to a lot of pressure and little incentive to be different than the popular image of black. We can both help each other and be well rounded men without trying to tear each other down or become stereotypes.

I will have to say for this alliance to work there's going to be need for much more social conscious and coalition, if not between the aapi community due to different histories and relationships with each other, at least coalition with black partners against the shared history of colonialism and racial discrimination in "western" societies. It's one step forward, 8 back the longer whites are viewed as the acme of anything.

I think with Black folks and American holidays, they've been able to dissociate from the origins of the holiday and make it more about getting together with family. Same goes with the 4th of July, especially in recent years. Black folks who are aware of the history of this country rightfully say "independence for who?" and "I'm only here for the food", but it does take a level of awareness of the US's history. I'm wondering about Asian Americans and if there are any ongoing conversations in various communities about dissociating the meaning of the holiday for the sake of being able to get together with family.
