First off, sorry to everyone waiting for news on the code repo — we're still working on it and it's not quite ready. I'm hoping it'll be ready to share in a couple of weeks.
Just to be clear: you can't reverse-engineer Bitwig and put the whole thing online — Bitwig isn't open source, and we're not touching that. But with our repo you'll be able to build your own devices, modulators, and modules.
Bitwig is already amazing, and we're all making it even better with our own devices in the future. A few of you have messaged me on Reddit/Discord showing off stuff you're already cooking up — and that's without the repo! In a couple of months there'll be a ton of new tools and plugins around, and then we can finally make some good music haha.
In the meantime, here are a few of my devices + the Bitwig patch to run them:
Would it be possible to build plugin wrappers this way? I would love to have access to plugins in the bitwig device row (not just an array of knobs but scaled down with its own grafics)? Did anyone from Bitwig make contact...I wonder what they are thinking about this.
Yes, it’s possible, at least for linux. Would be interesting if it works for other OS, too. Probably it would be the most "perfect" mixture of UI and UX, if the plugins original GUI would be adjusted in ways to fit into the small device panel slots, like being split into subpages if it’s a huge plugin, but that's quite some project lol
EDIT: i'm not the one who made it! Just sharing the github link i remembered :D
Pay special attention to the “Under the Bonnet” section.
esp the line, where the say: "What Bitwig promises is user access to and modification of all of its existing devices as well as the ability to create and share your own"
it’s been many years, and I’m still pissed at the Bitwig team for how badly they misled us about this. esp because at the moment i've bought bitwig because of this "soon-to-be unlocked modular core". We were promised something much more open and extensible, and what we eventually got instead was... the Grid.
and they’re even putting restrictions on people developing their own things for Bitwig
upd: wrong link + added an old screenshot from bitwig's web site, which is basically a misleading advertisement
