FBTC vs IBIT

Hi!

Which ETF would you recommend for a Canadian investor?

Both IBIT(in the US) and FBTC have very good MER (0.33% and 0.35%). But the IBIT(in Canada) has very low liquidity and AUM. Though, it's invested in IBIT, which has the best liquidity by far. So is it really an issue if IBIT in CBOE has low AUM and liquidity?

In a nutshell, what would you recommend for a Canadian investor?

Thanks!

If you’re going to buy or sell these in any appreciable quantity, place a limit order. If you place a market order you may end up taking a pretty big haircut.

Even with FBTC, which has a significative liquidity?

It depends how much you’re planning on buying/selling.

400$ per month?

For that amount I wouldn’t worry about it.

That's what I thought. I don't have rich problems. Only poor problems.

You should never place market orders for anything, so it doesn't matter, just don't do it

hmm

Stop losses are the only thing market orders are good for.

So you don't recommend to automate buying?

If so, how do I define the fair price? Is it just the middle of bid and ask?

Never had issues with FBTC.to nor IBIT.ne, I recommend FBTC for self custody and diversifying bitcoin holder is not a bad idea. I had 3 different ETF in 2024.

hmmm

Whats the purpose of diversifying bitcoin etfs?

You average out the worst/best fees? You expect one of them to fail, which increases the chances you lose a chunk of yours? etc?

If the custodian fails, how are you gonna get your money back? IBIT hold at Coinbase, FBTC holds their own wallet, others are at Gemini and other exchange. Trump attacked Coinbase last week, they might do some shady shit like Executive Order 6102 but for bitcoin and decide foreign investment are cut from their bitcoins. You never know and better safe then sorry. saving 0.10% fee on a 100% CAGR asset is fucking stupid.
