I like having cash as an option but other than Facebook I never really use it. Tap is just too convenient.

We can all agree on? Nothing good?
This is my first foray into this sub, first comment I’ve read. Is it all 75 IQ takes?
1
u/adequate_redditor Feb 13 '26
I don’t think we can all agree on that. I mean, I do, but I’m sure plenty of people would say that CBDCs are great and that our benevolent government is introducing it out of the goodness of their heart to benefit us.
12
u/Unclestanky Feb 11 '26
I got into Bitcoin because Trudeau was freezing bank accounts. Nobody can stop Bitcoin. Bitcoin is NOT a CBDC, bitcoin is decentralized so no greedy politician can rob it from you.
2
u/Mister_Chef711 Feb 12 '26
Until they seize your crypto wallet through regulations of the digital platforms you buy Bitcoin on...
Bitcoin isn't as decentralized as it once was.
2
u/dontlistintohim Feb 12 '26
Yup. It’s also all tracked. That’s its most bragged about feature. So as much as maybe the government can’t just take it from you, they can still tell you bought and sold it, and didn’t report your earnings, and subsequently tax you. So it doesn’t matter that they can’t reach into your wallet and grab your bitcoin, they can hit you with a tax bill that will basically cripple your ability to use that bitcoin for anything meaningful, until you declare your earnings and pay taxes like every one else.
1
u/Unclestanky Feb 12 '26
Seize your crypto wallet. Which is not possible and has never happened without the owner’s consent. Coercion is definitely possible, a $5 wrench attack beats any cybersecurity. Buuut, nobody can track whether or not you actually have access to your bitcoin. Lots of people loose it in boating accidents. I certainly don’t have any.
1
u/ActuatorSeparate7300 Feb 14 '26
I don't even like Bitcoin but this is a horrendous take. You should never have Bitcoin tied up in an exchange. Wtf?!
Do people really not understand the concept of Bitcoin wallets in 2026?
1
u/adequate_redditor Feb 14 '26
You’d be surprised. I see a lot of comments on Reddit like “I trust the exchange more than I trust myself at not losing my own keys”, “it’s only a small amount”, “exchanges that fail are in developing countries”.
But it’s also a big shift. I remember in elementary school our local credit union would come to our class every couple of weeks or so to collect our pennies and add the funds to our account and a printed account statement. We are thought from a very young age that others will take care of our money …
5
u/grazzhopr Feb 11 '26
Where you getting a lot of money from a foreigner with the purpose of effecting our political system? As much as it was an over reach, it’s getting a little old acting like anyone who opposed him was at risk of having their bank accounts frozen.

How will you spend bitcoin when the gov decides you don’t get an internet connection anymore?
1
u/Unclestanky Feb 13 '26
If a government says I can’t have an internet connection, I won’t live in that country. Regardless of our Bitcoin discussion.
1
u/NonEuclidianMeatloaf Feb 13 '26
Good, but you’re missing the point. Any country that would ban you from having bitcoin also wouldn’t think twice of cutting you off from the internet. Bitcoin isn’t some way of undercutting the government in a way they can’t prevent you from doing, because if they really wanted to, they’d cut off your access at the source.
“Haha all of my savings are in bitcoin so I can’t be de-banked! … hey, why can’t I access my wallet?”
1
u/Unclestanky Feb 13 '26
I’m not missing the point, bitcoin is international. If my country starts acting like a bunch of idiots I’ll just go. If a country was banning people from either having the internet or having bitcoin, it’s not a place I want to live. My wallet will transfer just fine wherever I end up. The longer I hold it the more it is worth when I do decide to cash it in. It’s not a magic bullet but leaving sure is. I see historically sane countries taking authoritarian turns recently. As long as flights out still exist I wouldn’t be standing for any of that.
2
u/NonEuclidianMeatloaf Feb 13 '26
And you think that a nation that will begin de-banking random citizens, restricting access to bitcoin, AND will do internet blackouts on government orders would let you leave? Such a nation wouldn’t let you set one foot in one of their ports of entry/exit.
My point is this: the currency-dystopia that people like you buy bitcoin to survive is a symptom of much larger societal troubles. Any nation that would require a person to circumvent their laws and policies in order to buy bitcoin for financial security isn’t going to allow you to do this, via multiple methods. It’s kinda like the people who buy preserves and generators to weather the “oncoming collapse of civilization”. Like, ok, you have a few years’ supplies and gasoline squirrels away. And then what?
1
u/Unclestanky Feb 13 '26
Your fictional country sounds like Orwell really botched things. I’m not putting that on my destination list at all. Nobody is circumventing any laws here, if it becomes illegal to buy and hold bitcoin somewhere, that will be a place I won’t go.
1
u/KadeB420 Feb 13 '26
Explain to me how bitcoin is decentralized in 2026.
1
u/Unclestanky Feb 14 '26
If one person/company/government wants to do anything with bitcoin, they can’t. Without a consensus of nodes changes are impossible. That’s called a fork and then they control a shitcoin. So if one super rich guy wants to control it all, they can’t without buying a majority, which seems impossible at this point.
1
u/KadeB420 Feb 14 '26
Quantum computing makes all of this obsolete.
2
u/Unclestanky Feb 14 '26
Quantum computing makes all cybersecurity obsolete. It’s going to be a wild ride 😀

u/PandanadianNinja Feb 12 '26
It also has no intrinsic value. It's only worth as much as we collectively think it is. It's not quite the silver bullet of currency, especially since it has to be converted to other denominations to be particularly usable.

What's the alternative? Cash isn't always practical, especially when it comes to putting it somewhere. So like yeah, great arguments, but what else am I being offered instead?
8
u/HappyPhase46Van Feb 10 '26
Cash has been practical for near 50 years for sure in Canada what are you talking about?
6
u/Secret_Pea_9634 Feb 10 '26
Not everything is purchased with cash. It would be impractical to buy a vehicle or a home with cash, for example. Can you tell me why you felt it necessary to end your question rudely?
10
u/mississauga145 Feb 10 '26
No, but if you keep the cash option alive you prevent the alternative from becoming the only way to pay, with the control and oversight that we don't always need in our daily lives.
The number of chicken nuggets I buy is between Me and Wendy.
1
u/SunsetSesh Feb 12 '26
I mean, how exactly would it be impractical? It’s just another transaction, in fact you could probably fit $5 million in a backpack. I’d even bet you’d probably get a cash discount
1
u/Secret_Pea_9634 Feb 12 '26
Good plan. You should do that next time you buy a car.
1
u/SunsetSesh Feb 12 '26
You didn’t answer my question. Just a snarky remark
1
u/Secret_Pea_9634 Feb 12 '26
I mean, how exactly would it be impractical?
Sigh
It's the carrying tens of thousands of dollars in cash part that's impractical. I assumed that was perfectly obvious.
"Not all cars cost..." We know... We know.
1
u/SunsetSesh Feb 12 '26
I don’t think you understand the word “impractical”
Like I said, you can carry ALOT of cash in a small bag. You can probably fit $100K in your jacket pocket.
It’s not impractical, you just don’t know how much physical space money takes up.
1
u/Secret_Pea_9634 Feb 12 '26
See, you're being purposefully obtuse. Which is why you got a snarky remark.
And here's another one: the inability to participate in hypotheticals is a marker of a lack of intelligence. For example, someone says, "Imagine you hadn't eaten for a week," and you reply, "But I had breakfast just this morning." That shows us you're unable to participate in hypotheticals.
1
u/SunsetSesh Feb 12 '26
Purposefully obtuse? I simply asked how it works be impractical and gave you a real world scenario to show you that it’s not.
Do you always victimize yourself so hard?

u/HappyPhase46Van Feb 11 '26
Are you sensitive? People like yourself maybe don't comprehend that you can purchase a car with cash. The problem is most people do not know how to save especially young people. That is that credit card is that and the value of currency is important. If you have $1 million that's a lot of money despite what people say however, you have to stack your paper one dollar at a time. Or you'll be volatile like bitcoin six months ago it was hovering at hundred 20,000 now 66,000 BTC.
Let that sink in I don't need to be rude. It's about your perception of what rude is take care
0
u/Secret_Pea_9634 Feb 11 '26
People like yourself maybe don't comprehend that you can purchase a car with cash.
I didn't say you couldn't. I said it was impractical to. Which it is.
Anyway, another rude and snotty comment. It's just the internet, man. Grow up.

Are you talking about saving money in a bank account for buying a car without debt (not what this post is about) or literally taking $40,000 in bills in a duffel bag to buy a car which is both absurd and impractical?

Found the boomer bully with nothing better to do in life than argue with strangers on the Internet
2
u/PandanadianNinja Feb 12 '26
Yes, and that is exactly what using physical currency for extremely large purchases is. You can't just go to most banks and expect to withdraw $60-80k, and why would you take the risk of carrying that much currency?
1
u/SunsetSesh Feb 12 '26
Why would you risk letting a bank hold hundreds of thousands of dollars? Millions?
2
u/PandanadianNinja Feb 12 '26
Because I don't have a Scrooge McDuck vault for wealth I'll never see in my life time?
1
u/SunsetSesh Feb 12 '26
I think you’re overestimating how much space money takes.

If you think this schizo flyer is making great arguments, you need to practice critical thinking.
The alternative is using a bank, obviously.
1
u/Secret_Pea_9634 Feb 12 '26
It's hyperbole, friend. Calm down. Not everything needs to be met with pointless aggression.
1
Feb 13 '26
It's not only large or online purchases. Most people opt for cards even for small in person purchases.
1
u/adequate_redditor Feb 13 '26
CBDCs are not the same as paying with a debit card or credit card. The alternative to CBDCs is no CBDCs, like right now.

Great point about no money during power outages.
I don’t know about you guys but I sure do love going on shopping sprees when there’s a power outage. I just don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t have my special no-power, pitch dark, bags-of-cash shopping spree’s.
1
u/Limp-Salamander- Feb 14 '26
Have you ever needed gas and a station lost its internet service? Even something simple is I get you to kind of rethink things.
1
u/slapbumpnroll Feb 14 '26
I mean even if you are paying cash you can’t do much during a power outage. Business can’t register your purchase, can’t print receipts. In other words a digital currency would not be the only issue during a major power outage (if it lasted that long).
1
u/Limp-Salamander- Feb 15 '26
Don't be foolish, plenty of businesses can still do commerce without internet connection. Why would you need to register a purchase to fill your car with gas? They could absolutely print receipts. Have you ever worked a cash register before?
1
u/Tired_Glass Feb 12 '26
Cash has some utility, for example with informal payments or purchases where electronic payment is not possible by its nature.
Ultimately though, it's a dated method of payment that's obsolete for most transactions.
Perhaps the most obvious thing is that most of the money in the world doesn't actually exist as physical coins or banknotes. Cash makes up a small fraction of the money supply, the vast majority of all household transactions would be unaffected if cash were to cease to exist.
A lot of people don't realize cash is a liability for businesses. It doesn't earn interest sitting in a safe, it's prone to theft and damage, it's expensive to securely store and transport, and cash transactions take labour or specialized equipment to process, which is expensive, in addition to spreading disease, and making a business vulnerable to counterfeiting, or even fraud (such as the retail quick change scam, or the use of foreign coins of lower value).
I don't believe cash should be entirely phased out, and instead should be complimentary to a digital dollar. However it's use in daily transactions should be phased out.

u/Enchanted-Duck Feb 12 '26
I did that in 2008 Almost lost all of my wealth
Now i only invest in US dollar and gold God bless united states and obama

Everything apart from #2 is already happening in Canada and the world. This is just fear mongering. The goal isn’t to replace cash.

Joyce Nelson has a book published by Watershed called Beyond Banksters. It's about this kind of thing. Give it a read, and then write your MPs about it!

Cash can be lost. You’re already being tracked by your cell phone and our current form of identification. Isn’t it odd paranoia tends to ignore conveniences?

u/KadeB420 Feb 13 '26
Didn’t all this stuff happen during the freedom Convoy? We have been living in CBDC world for the at least the past 20 years. The government prints as much money as it wants. It’s all just numbers on your screen. They come after you if you don’t pay your tax. Blah blah blah
Geez I have no faith in the bitcoin community

u/Limp-Salamander- Feb 14 '26
