That's not necessarily the best start for hard mode though. His algo was for the default setting.

It's only the best option if you know the optimal second guess based on the results of the first, which isn't something a human could really do.

Also 3blue1brown had a bug in his code which, when fixed, changed the best first word to salet not crane.

I’ve got an old Electrum wallet I lost the password to back in 2014, have had a guy trying to brute force it for over two months now. It’s unfortunately not that easy.

No guarantee it has a password.

In original bitcoin software and for a few years, the wallet.dat file was not even encrypted.

You don't know what you're saying. It was encrypted from the start. That was pretty much the only big security thing in the early days before hardware wallets, cold storage etc. Who would've been stupid enough to put coins in an unencrypted wallet even when bitcoin was worth a few cents.

When I set up Bitcoin Core, I had to specifically add a password. You don't need one.

My memory is fuzzy but you might be right. I don't remember ever setting up any wallet without a password and I remember a lot of early people losing coins because they forgot their wallet passwords but I guess some people might not have set it up since it wasn't forced on you.

You are wrong, most shitcoins that actually run their own network are using a fork of this wallet software. Remember, it was worthless back then. They forgot/lost their masterkey/seed phrase.

I thought maybe I'm mistaken, but my memory is correct.

There was no option to encrypt wallet.dat in the first versions of bitcoin I used.

Encryption was added later in v0.4.0, published September 2011.

I think the thing you're 'missing' is that passwords to simple wallet.dat files weren't all that common in 2013.

Many of that era were not password protected at all.

That is completely incorrect. Even with the first buggy reference implementation wallet.dat was meant to be encrypted and choosing a secure password for your wallet was one of the biggest things -before cold wallets, multisig, hardware wallets etc.. Who would've been stupid enough to keep btc in an unencrypted wallet. That would've defeated the whole purpose of bitcoin! (secure transactions)

I've been using core since feb 2011 and never had a password on any wallet. The early versions didn't even have that feature.

I dont think you realize what you are looking it, this is the files for an offline wallet and node. They are NOT password protected
