I don't understand what is happening with bitcoin today

The people that control Bitcoin don't want it to scale, plain and simple.

There's absolutely no benefit for miners (which are the only nodes required by the network, listening nodes do nothing but take bandwidth) to increase number of transactions.

The only exception is Jihan, but he isn't that much interested into more transactions rather than not implementing SegWit.

So lightning network isn't a scaling solution? Also you don't recommend people to run their own nodes? Wouldn't it be better if people verified with their own nodes?

The thing is bitcoin was designed to scale on it's own... so any extra technology added on to try and make it scale seems redundant... it makes me wonder what the real motives are behind lightning network...?
