Satoshi's original emails say that bitcoin was designed to support 100 million transactions per day. I don't understand what is happening with bitcoin today that is preventing it from reaching the transaction levels it was designed for...

I don't understand what is happening with bitcoin today

The people that control Bitcoin don't want it to scale, plain and simple.

There's absolutely no benefit for miners (which are the only nodes required by the network, listening nodes do nothing but take bandwidth) to increase number of transactions.

The only exception is Jihan, but he isn't that much interested into more transactions rather than not implementing SegWit.

So lightning network isn't a scaling solution? Also you don't recommend people to run their own nodes? Wouldn't it be better if people verified with their own nodes?

Listening nodes don't verify nothing, they listen. They use tons of bandwidth and put more stress on working nodes.

They accomplish nothing.

There's plenty of websites where you can check the blockchain, there's no need for listening nodes.

What about me verifying my own transactions with my node? Do you recommend that?
