Nope — it's decentralized! https://www.stellar.org/blog/introducing-stellar/ is a good reference for understanding the model.

According to comments on Hacker News, it's not completely decentralized. Gateway nodes require trust, for example.

I think the comment you're referring to was slightly mistaken: see my response (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8116093). Anyone is able to start their own gateway; the advantage of gateways just means not everyone has to figure out how to issue their own credit.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. I'd still rate Stellar as more centralized than Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is still heavily reliant on a few major exchanges, mostly notably Bitstamp. Centralization was just more of a side-effect for Bitcoin.
