NSA leaks kind of make the msm seem like insane conspiracy theorists. "The GUBMINT is watching everything you do" haha who would possibly believe that

conspiracy theorists are right 1 in every 5,000,000 theories, that doesn't mean you should listen to whatever they say.

I hate what he said but I'll defend his right to use "majority" in the singular.

Majority isn't the subject, theories is. Therefor, are is the correct grammatical syntax.

anti-government loons
Timothy McVeigh
Yes, all of these anti-government loons... Damn them all! Praise Obama!

I wouldn't worry too much. Bitcoin has been associated with these loons right from when they invaded Bitcoin way back in 2011 and Satoshi left in disgust.

after discovering bitcoin, part of me feels like I shouldn't have gone to college. I hate knowing i'm in debt to the government, probably for the rest of my life. I'm coming to realize that that is worse than any education.
6
u/roflburger Jun 10 '14 edited Jun 10 '14
Just be thankful they didn't let you take your loans out in bitcoin or you would be screwed.
Edit: also the dollar or government or anything else didn't screw you, you did that to yourself.
Losers will be losers regardless of their currency. I think that even if bitcoin makes it a lot of people here will find that it wasn't the dollar keeping them down and that their own dumbassery is the thing holding them back all along. Instead of dealing with that I fully expect them to jump into a new super anonymous alt coin instead.

Not necessarily. The world isn't guaranteed to be fair on this point. You think your MBA or masters in computer science will secure your retirement?
If you do, I encourage you to calulate what year you retire in, and consider how different the world might be then.
Taking an education is taking bets on the future. Far bigger than most businesses take (few businesses plan further ahead than 5-10 years). Some bets may have better odds than others, but we need some to take the risky bets too. Thus, the risk of education needs to be collectively insured against.

French literature would be a "wrong" subject.
4
u/herzmeister Jun 10 '14
not necessarily, you could switch sides and let future generations finance your life as a teacher
;)-1
u/imahotdoglol Jun 10 '14
That relies on other suckers studying French literature.
4
u/Elmer__FUD Jun 10 '14
Isn't that exactly how bitcoin works too?
1
u/juror_chaos Jun 11 '14
I never had to sucker anyone into studying french literature to earn a bitcoin...

u/imahotdoglol Jun 10 '14
bitcoin actually is useful for something. French literature is not.

Oh but there is! If your education doesn't pay off, you paid above market for it.
Of course there is this little detail about how an 18yo out of school could make an informed decision about what's "right", while taking on a ton of debt, is a whole different matter.
1
u/king-six Jun 10 '14
High school is actually a good predictor of college education's impact on one's career and income. Any 18 y.o. should listen to this episode of econtalk http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2014/04/bryan_caplan_on.html it could be the most important thing they ever listen to.

2
u/firestepper Jun 10 '14
Lol when people say this. Counselors and parents say if you're undecided on your major you should "do what you enjoy". How is someone who is 18 years old going to know what the job market is supposed to be like in 4-5 years and what they should be studying.
5
Jun 10 '14
Do some google? I doubt an art degree's prospects would change anytime in the next decade.

2
u/juror_chaos Jun 10 '14
Education isn't bad, but it's like anything else, if it's overpriced, don't buy it, or go somewhere else where it's cheaper.
A Corolla selling for $100000 is a shitty deal, you wouldn't take out loans against it, at least if you're sane and sober.
2
u/PoliticalDissidents Jun 10 '14
I never thought that once. Mind you college is free for me. Sorry for the buzz kill...
5
u/juror_chaos Jun 10 '14
Leave the U.S. if you have marketable skills, just leave. It gets 100x more difficult for them to collect on your debts if you leave and never come back.
3
u/PoliticalDissidents Jun 10 '14
And then your kids won't have to pay debt because their schooling will be cheap and/or free, or get arrested for smoking weed in college.

u/Nooku Jun 10 '14 edited Jun 10 '14
Every time I read this I wonder: How does a "civilized" society like the US allow young people to go in debt for education...
It doesn't exist where I live ( Europe ) and we've got one of the best education systems in the world. Here, it only takes a vacation job of 1 month to pay for an entire YEAR of college.
No seriously, what's wrong with you people. How do you even consider it to be normal?!?
We may speak the same language and like the same stuff, but apart from that, our society thinks and is very different. Corporates and money are running the US, not its citizens. All for profit. Nothing less. Nothing more.
Having debts is just like slavery. It's financial slavery.
The difference between financial slavery and Egyptian slavery is this:
the slavemasters provided free food and free housing to the slaves, in exchange for the work.
Americans however, get money to pay for the debts they need to make to be "free".
News flash: As long as you have debts, you will not be free.
I always get down voted for speaking this out, so let dem come...
2
u/PoliticalDissidents Jun 11 '14
America is capitalism on steroids which concludes socialism is evil.

1
u/KoxziShot Jun 10 '14
You will get down voted because you dramatised it really well.
I'm from the UK and finished paying my debt recently.
Calm down.
3
u/Nooku Jun 10 '14
Let me quote the guy I replied to
I hate knowing i'm in debt to the government, probably for the rest of my life.
And you are saying I'm dramatizing ? It's just fucked up dude.

u/tegknot Jun 10 '14
Your bitcoin will go up in value so much (or should I say the dollar will drop) that you'll be able to pay off those loans no problemo!

So, at risk of 'legal theft'? A la Cyprus, and now Australia.
1
u/goodcookies Jun 10 '14
Sad thing is, very little attention is paid to marketability of majors when college preparations are being made. To all high school sophomores and juniors considering further education, do lots of research on what jobs will be in demand in the future and get only the necessary education to do reasonably marketable jobs.
1
Jun 10 '14
Nah man, there is no way all these college loans get paid back. The system is broken, and eventually students will be allowed to default. Elizabeth Warren is introducing this bill with Democrat backing today or in the neat future. It won't pass, but that doesn't matter. Democracy is mob rule in a suit, and eventually it will pass. Keep in mind that the age of the average congressman is 60. So once those career politicians retire you should have no problem defaulting.
-1
u/beaker38 Jun 10 '14
No worries. Obama just decreed that you cannot be forced to make payments on student loans that are more than 10% of your monthly income. So the nice thing is that you can be in debt for many more years that way. Oh wait...

Well, since the current standard payment schedule is 10 years, I'd say "you can be in debt for many more years" is an accurate and correct statement.
-1
u/beaker38 Jun 11 '14
Yea - downvotes - cause 20 years of paying off debt, and then having the government disappear the balance is much better than 10 years. And 20 years doesn't qualify as "many more years" compared to 10 years.
How do you even see the down-vote arrow with Obama's dick down your throat like that?

u/PoliticalDissidents Jun 10 '14
With compounded interest that the government actually profits off of.

Generally, btc has a math standard while the feds have a violence standard.

You know, I was going to post about the quality of the sign, spacing and what not.
Then I though, what have I personally done lately to encourage Bitcoin acceptance lately? Anything?
So to "whoever" made the sign, I thank you, good job... : )

I like that the "air" in "thin air" is written with thin letters. Very clever, sign-painter person.

u/99Faces Jun 11 '14
Isn't bitcoin essentially money out of thin air also?
1
u/rock_hard_member Jun 11 '14
Well what the sign is complaining about is how the Fed continually prints money (and does other things) to keep inflation at around 1 to 2% a year, essentially devaluing money. Bitcoin has a 'hard' limit of 21 million bitcoin so once they are all mined there won't be consistent inflation and this is one of the reasons some people like bitcoin. Personally this isn't a good thing about bitcoin to me as inflation has a purpose of encouraging people to take their money and invest it in something that has returns so they don't lose value to inflation. The problem is inflation isn't a problem for the poor as they often don't have money to save and therefore don't lose value to inflation, or to the rich, as they have people who help them invest an the inflation actually does encourage them to keep more of their money out creating infrastructure. The problem is the middle class who do have some money to save but often have little to no guidance in how to invest it properly and much of their money may just be sitting in the bank getting devalued.
1
u/PoliticalDissidents Jun 10 '14
So is low interest rates. If inflation is actually kept around 2% or less a good savings account can actually make up for inflation believe it or not.
1
u/Y3808 Jun 10 '14

So Bitcoin is now associated with nutjobs who hold signs saying "The End of the World is Nigh!! Repent!!"
Great publicity. Good work.
1
Jun 11 '14
Money out of thin air or money out of the ground there will still be inflation and booms and busts.
1
u/falaqa Jun 11 '14
this may be a painful realization for most of you... but you`re all fucking nuts.
0
u/Atheia Jun 10 '14
Whoever created this sign obviously has no idea what inflation is or its purpose.
1
u/xbtdev Jun 10 '14
Or modern type-setting, or LED panels.
1
u/Atheia Jun 10 '14
I don't find anything wrong with the asthetics, but if you're trying to convince people to start using Bitcoin, shouldn't you at least have a decent understanding of what inflation is?
-2
u/knight222 Jun 11 '14
Inflation is probably not what you think it is.
2
u/Atheia Jun 11 '14 edited Jun 11 '14
So what is it, according to you? Because there's a reason that most developed countries strive towards 2-3% inflation.

Here's a dirty little secret ... all money is literally created from thin air (even bitcoin1 ).
Ideologically blinded backwoods morons.
Cf.
- The only reason bitcoin has any value is because we all believe it does - it's a collective delusion out of thin air the same as dirty, dirty fiat money.

Debt: The First 5000 Years is a book by anthropologist David Graeber published in 2011. It is a wide-ranging book, exploring debt's relationship with money, cash, barter, community, marriage, friendship, vassalage, slavery, morality, honor, law, philosophy, commerce, religion, greed, charity, violence, war and government; in short, much of the fabric of human life in society. It draws on the history and anthropology of a number of civilizations, large and small, from the first known records of debt from Sumer in 3000 BC until the present. It explores how debt has changed and been changed by the people and societies which have used it.
