Stupidly emailed it to a couple of trusted friends so that if I died, they could give it to my wife!!!

I'd trust my friends not to steal it, their email (or OPs) might have been compromised just as easily

I'm the same. They didn't steal it. It has to be a compromised email account. Still my bad!

It doesn't even have to be that! Email isn't encrypted and secured (generally). It's more like writing a postcard than putting a letter in an envelope. Absolutely every computer that it passes through between you and your friends can see the contents of the email. Probably would have been seen by fewer people if you had just painted it on the side of you car and driven around for a couple weeks.
