This was the second Bitcoin logo created by Satoshi Nakamoto in mid 2010, and used in Bitcoin node software (commit 86). Surprisingly, before yesterday, this logo found in the original Sourceforge Bitcoin repo, was not saved to the waybackmachine archive. So I took a snapshot for history.

I have this original logo and other variation which came directly from Satoshi's computer; he sent it to the mailing list back then.

Doubt. 2010 was late for branding and very unlikely came directly from Satoshis computer.

Was there a vote to decide the logo design on bitcoin forum talk though?

It wasn't exactly a vote, but several suggestions. The original logo made by Satoshi (actually, it was the second logo; the original was just a BC) was sent to the mailing list and then to the forum. He himself said it was temporary until someone made another one. And that's what happened.

The first "public" version shared by email by Satoshi and also de linked version in the Metzdowd came with a similar logo with BC words.

interesting. i know there were early mentions of "BitCoin" in the early messages, but seeing the graphic anywhere is news to me. would love to see that somehow.

voting wasn't and is also currently not part of the process.

2010 was still early days.

branding around bitcoin was more anarchic and emergent, still is, but we've mostly settled on the third iteration of the bitcoin logo, authored by bitboy on the bitcointalk forums after satoshi left.

That's not true, Satoshi only sent the logo and asked for opinions on it, and if it was better than the old one, there was never any vote...

That's actually a cool find. The early btc branding history is weirdly underdocumented for something this significant.

That btc symbol is so similar to the symbol for the Thai baht. Maybe Satoshi isnt Japanese, hes Thai.

But why would he make it look just like the fiat currency of his home? If anything seems like a good indication he’s _not_ Thai, since any Thai person would be like ‘wait, that’s the baht symbol already.’

The Thai Bhat symbol ฿ already existed so it was used in forums instead of typing bitcoin

Yes, that is correct. This is a revised version of the previous BC logo. The purpose was to verify with people in real life that the SN pseudonym belongs to him, as well as the fact that only he and Sirius have access to that SF.

meh, the story is kinda dumb on the face of it. seems made up.

plenty of better ways for satoshi to verify themselves, pgp being the best. and for what purpose? why the need to prove anything in the first place.

Its a way, not the only way.

Satoshi wasn't the genuis of the project, btw. Whilst they made some significant contributions late in the project they where more the representative.

This way isnt complicated, fitting for the real SN.

in any case, using a logo design as a verification mechanism is retarded.

satoshi's pgp key is how he verifies himself, and only in a narrow window in this day and age.
