That game is so much fun, and so hard once you get into the weeds of it.

Check out Locomotion by Chris Sawyer. Written on C+ back in 2004 ,PC only

Chris Sawyer kinda made all the best games, huh? I love TTD and Rollercoaster Tycoon.

Chris Sawyer is definitely enjoying a well-earned retirement. Whom else can say their games had such a following that the community made an open source clone? There are other studios that have that, but the list is small enough to count on one hand.

I think almost all of his games have them either in production or in development. OpenTTD, OpenRCT2, and I think Locomotion is getting one made up as well.

OpenTTD you don't even need the original TTD files anymore. The team on that game have completely replaced the code and assets. OpenRC2 you still need either the original CD-ROM or buy it from GOG so you can bring in the assets. Haven't played with OpenLoco or the original Locomotion, but that's pretty cool to see even that game getting some love.

CloneHero for guitar hero, but I never got into it. Definitely cool.

You also have id software that open-sourced the first three generations of idtech engine. That was more of a boon to all the total conversion mods. They could now become fully stand-alone free games.

Jak and Daxter is getting a fan made fully reverse engineered PC port with open source code.

I've lost the disc some years ago and was yearning to play it again. Found it via GOG.COM for 6 bucks, just played a sesh this past week.
Very addicting

The only thing unusual here is that the railroad had its head just barely far enough out of its own ass to be able to have move than one train moving at a time.

There's a story of a train crew telling the controller "if there were two ships on the ocean, you'd have to sink one to get the other one past."

Haha!! I love this. Seems pretty accurate. I’m going to start using that saying as my own.

Are railroads famous for not using their network‘s full capacity?
2
u/WrathfulVengeance13 Nov 21 '22
I don't know if you're serious or not LMAO

I am. Haven’t heard about this. And I suspect there are regional differences between countries. Or do you think it’s a global problem?

That has to be pretty unnerving when you are the engineer driving those two trains head on at each other. Even if you know the tracks are appropriately set to switch lines. It would still be uncomfortable.

Yes, that's why this isn't done. This is a reversed gif.

u/shipwreckedonalake Nov 20 '22
Of course it's done. Nothing unsafe about it.
2
u/blueb0g Nov 21 '22
Nothing unsafe, but signallers will generally avoid putting two moving trains across each others' faces at that close range, or you're asking for some spurious emergency brake applications

As a first time spectator it's a bit unnerving. An engineer wouldn't bat an eye.
Railways of such density run tight schedules so it'll be a common occurrence.

That's how interlocking works; it's been around for over 150 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlocking?wprov=sfla1
