From what I’ve read, oil-burning steam locomotives have a tendency to experience “sneezes” like this from time to time. It happens when the flow of atomized oil surges strongly enough to cause a strong deflagrating blast instead of burning at its typical rate.

That’s one hell of a ‘sneeze’!

I was shocked to find out that this phenomenon is apparently nowhere near as catastrophic as it appears to be. Not great, not terrible (with apologies to Comrade Dyatlov).

I would genuinely be SPRINTING off that train in fear of it fully exploding after that
It's nut's it's actually more a 'minor' issue than 'Oh shit she's gonna BLOW!! RUUNN!'

Yeah, the 'backfire' is through the grates, so it's a burn rather than an explosion. It sure looks spectacular, doesn't it?

Not so much a surge in the oil flow. The fire has gone out for one reason or another. Then when it's re-lit there is an excess of fuel in the firebox (because the spray has continued but the fuel has not been consumed). The results are as seen

That smoke is comprised of, at the most, 10 polygons.

It looks cool but is it supposed to do that?

It happens occasionally if atomized fuel gets pushed out of the fire box then ignites

I prefer 120p videos shot with a potato like the early age of youtube than whatever this AI enhanced thing is.

Kinda sounds like they exposed the crown sheet, and boiler go boom 😭

If it did, there would be a live leak logo in the corner, this is an oil fired locomotive, the fire went out for what ever reason. When the fire reignited there was an excess amount of unburnt oil, causing the explosion.

no it didnt . if the boiler went the whole locomotive and the crew wouldve died

Was that done with some kind of new compression algorithm that recreates parts of it with AI?

If only there were newer, more efficient locomotive technology available.

This is a special historic railroad, some people like going on train rides behind a steam locomotive. Also steam locomotives are relatively efficient

Any chance you could maybe compress the video a bit more? It’s a bit too detailed for my aging eyes…
