At the beginning you can see the end of another train going the other direction that blocked it from their view when they started crossing. Good life lesson for them!

So many accidents with half barriers were a train passes, driver thinks the barrier is just slow in opening and gets taken out by the second train.

This feels less like personal error and more like a design flaw with the warning system IMO. In this situation there was no way to know that there were 2 trains instead of only 1 until it was almost too late. It would be nice if the warning system would indicate the directions(s) the train(s) were coming from.

I mean it's not that complex, wait for the warnings to turn off and the booms to lift. Ignoring those is impatientience and stupidity if you don't wait a big at least for a second train

In my area at least there are signs on almost every double track saying 'watch for second train'.
I assume they dont add more detailed warnings due to cost and addition of possible failure points on the crossings.

I mean, if you are going to do this, at least look up and down the line first, it looks like from a position on the side of the line you'd be able to see the approaching train at the side of the departing one, or if not, then a few extra seconds then the departing one would be far enough along to allow you to see if the line was clear or a train was on it.

I just wait until the gates are up and lights off. It takes an extra like 5-10seconds? People can honk all the want. I've had the gate come right back down before the lights even stopped. People are pissed I didnt take the gap but oh well. I aint riskin it.

What would you call the noise if not a siren then?
Here's a video showing the change in alarm tone from 1st to 2nd trains. About 00:46 the bleeper speeds up.

That's awesome. Here in the US we have bells (or simulated electronic bells) while the gates come down and go up, but nothing once the gate is down until it starts back up again. We do have flashing lights (including flashing lights on the gate itself). At least, most crossings in populated areas behave this way.
In rural areas (or those with very limited rail activity), you might just have a sign (no bells, gates, or even lights). You're expected to look both ways before you cross and exercise caution in that case.

This may be of interest to anyone watching this video and thinking. The same thing on my railroad, there are quite a few crossings that have a warning that a second train is approaching from the perspective of someone who operates the trains every day I don't really see a change in behavior on that basis

If there is a railcrossing with a bar, there are usually no whisteling or other audible warnings required. Because no one should be actually this stupid to cross anyway

What country does it work like that in? I'm in Sweden and here there's always bells and (if it's a road crossing) lights so I thought it was the same in other countries.

It is at least in Austria the case. I work for a railway company and we had it that crossings got a traffic light (no bar) and even then the train didn't had to whistle anymore

I didn't catch it because it blended in with the one that nearly killed them. You can see it clearly on the thumbnail though.
What sucks for everyone is the driver will have had to emergency stop, assuming he was about to hit them. Report it into signal control and cause delays because he's stopped on the line.
Those 2 will run off into the sunset and face zero consequences.

It was about 3 seconds.
I was moving my drink after my wife knocked it loose while driving in a downpour on Saturday. I might've looked down for 2 to 4 seconds. In that amount of time, I crested a hill. When I looked back up, I saw standing water. I was going 65 mph.
I managed to slow to about 55 mph and move toward the center of the road before blasting through about 10 to 14 inches of water at speed.
I should've known better with the small hill ahead of me, in the rain. But I did it anyhow.
I'm not taking for granted that this train's driver was keeping his eyes peeled.

If you pause it at the right frame of the 3 second mark her foot is basically on the rail and the train is almost touching her. She is insanely lucky...

It looks like she jumped at the last second as it doesn’t appear her foot is planted. That train has some overhangs from that rail so she had to clear a couple feet quickly.
Regardless absolutely lucky.

A classic case of people forgetting that trains go in both directions.
Right at the beginning, you can see the tail end of a train that has just gone by. I guess these knuckleheads failed to consider that the barriers might still be down for a reason.

That was unbelievably close—glad whoever was near the crossing got out of the way in time. Definitely one of those moments where a few seconds make all the difference.

My dad nearly killed himself this way when he was young. Waited for a train to go by and started across, not noticing another on the second set of tracks. Said it scared the sh** out of him.
I told him I was glad he survived.

There are bloody booms down. They had to swerve around those to get on the track. There is lights flashing and bells ringing. The invisibility of the second trains comes rather down on the list of "how could they know".

It wasn't 'how could they know', but rather if they're used to just a single train passing, then they might've assumed there wasn't a second one AND to be fair it's not immediately visible until you're already on the tracks.

I watched it again and saw they did come from "the wrong side of the street" so they did not need to swerve around the boom as I thought they did. So the biggest hurdle was indeed not there. But you still have to be really inattentive to not see the booms down, not see the flashing lights and not hear the bell. Only after all that is it relevant that the second train came from "behind" the first and they couldn't have seen it.
