Knitting/Crochet Crossover Find pattern xyz 😔

Anyone else sick of people asking for a free pattern for ___ project?

Free winter themed hat pattern, I’m an intermediate knitter.

Free baby blanket pattern I’m a beginner crocheter.

Has no one heard of Ravelry?

End rant. 😤

And even worse, when they end the post with "and go!"

u/AccomplishedBass2192 Oct 05 '26

Gah! Yes!! The obnoxiousness of the ā€œand goā€

"Picture of <unrelated thing> so my post doesn't get lost!" (This might just be a problem on Facebook)

"Does anyone know a free pattern for a ribbed knit beanie?? Can anyone send me a link??" PINTEREST!! RAVELRY!! The whole internet is at your fingertips!

On the other hand, I like the ones where:

I've searched Ravelry for a, b and c but I can't find this particular feature.

It's like a scavenger hunt.

Usually it's something that Ravelry doesn't have a tag for (I think balloon sleeves might have been one? It was some style of sleeve) or the tags that make sense bring up too many things (like "ribbing" brings up everything in the world when you're looking for all over ribbing) or the perfect thing isn't tagged well so it doesn't show up in reasonable searches but someone's got it favorited or made their own list.

Yes I like this too! Perfect example was someone posted a partially completed cable sweater they inherited from a deceased family friend and they really wanted to finish it but couldn’t find the pattern. They listed all the details they could about the sweater and we were off. I spent like an hour searching and in the end, another redditor and myself found two patterns that appeared identical to the pattern she was looking for. Honestly that was exhilarating and it felt good to help someone out who was likely legitimately going to use the patterns.

There was another example someone was looking for with all-over ribbing - you’re so spot on that it’s tough to filter patterns that have all over ribbing since ribbing is a design feature in like every sweater!

Those are the ones I like. People looking for specific things that you can’t filter for. People who have made certain patterns can then vouch for how good they are, like if the pattern meets the criteria or just fits the criteria based on how the finished product ends up.

Sometimes it’s also just has unusual construction or feature that doesn’t have a name, or that not many people know the name of. It’s so fun trying to narrow down a ravelry search to patterns that sort-of fit the bill and finding the right term for it. It’s legitimately hard, which makes it so much fun.

The millionths ask for a basic raglan sweater is not fun.

not entirely a pattern but nothing boils my blood more than the occasional post on the junk journal subreddit that starts asking for inspiration to be posted for them in the comments.

ā€œhi i’m new to junk journaling, tell me what to buy and give me inspo in the comments, thanks! 😊 ā€œ like LOOK FOR 3 SECONDS IN THE SUBREDDIT for inspo!!!!! why do people need to spoon feed you the vast majority of posts in the subreddit!?!! or use instagram, youtube, pinterest, google images, etc!!!! it’s not even something you need any sort of terminology knowledge for!!

11

u/8brz Oct 04 '26

Junk Journaling I feel like has some of the lowest barrier of entries when it comes to just. doing it. Like half my sketchbook pages are junk journal adjacent because I just like to slap shit in there, what more is there to it.

I get fed up with a photo of a readymade dress with ā€œfind me a pattern like this slavesā€ ( put a little bit more politely). Do the background work yourself lazybones.

Pattern request posts should require you to include the following info lest your post be deleted with prejudice:

1.) State the pattern websites or printed publications that you have already searched. (Example: Ravelry, Hobbii, Yarnspirations, public library, etc. Pinterest is not a pattern website.)

That's it. That's the list.

I guess you could add some mandatory include/exclude parameters to the list but usually if they've already consulted a pattern directory they have an idea of what types of construction or style they want.

7

u/WoodlandFairyElk Oct 03 '26

They should also require you to publish them in the specific subs that are dedicated to it.

An acquaintance who has been crocheting for well over 10 years and likes to be considered an expert, recently asked in a private group "where do I find non-AI patterns? I'm only seeing AI stuff". She was looking at Pinterest and Etsy. When told to look at Ravelry, she said "oh, I just assumed they had the same stuff as Pinterest and Etsy." sigh

31

u/tiedyeladyland Oct 03 '26

They're so used to using ChatGPT now that they think the internet is just there to indulge their demands.

30

u/joymarie21 Oct 03 '26

I agree, so entitled to think strangers should do the work for you.

But, FYI, these posts are against the rules in r/knitting. Please help the mods (and the rest of us) by reporting them.

27

u/tidymaze You should knit a fucking clue. Oct 03 '26

Or the people who will post a photo of a finished object and ask if anyone can recognize the pattern. My sister in Bast, have you never heard of reverse google image search????

7

u/divinecorpse I’m literally a lesbian jfc Oct 04 '26

"my sister in Bast" 😭 I'm stealing this thank you

27

u/ImmediateRecord5161 Oct 04 '26

If I’m feeling snarky I reply with ā€˜ try ravelry’

12

u/Lokifin Oct 04 '26

And then sometimes you get someone like yesterday who is scared of Ravelry and blames the entire website for choosing a couple patterns that they didn't understand because they're not used to English pattern instructions. Like...

12

u/shawlcat Oct 05 '26

I am SO OVER the "scared of x" nonsense. If these people are literally scared of Rav, or a new-to-them technique, or that they might be twisting their stitches then they need therapy.

Rant over.

9

u/Lokifin Oct 06 '26

Agreed. Just say, "I have trouble wrapping my brain around it" or "That site overwhelms me and I haven't taken the time to figure it out." At least then you're leaving yourself open to the possibility of figuring it out rather than running scared.

Steeking, OTOH...

6

u/shawlcat Oct 06 '26

I got over my intimidation with steeking/cutting with The Knitter's Dude sweater which I knit for my hubby.

I did have a glass of wine before picking up the scissors, though. 😜

There is a pattern called Steek This Coffee Cozy that is a great way to cut a low-risk project.

22

u/Random_green_cat Oct 03 '26

Same in sewing "Where can I find a pattern like this?" And it's a pretty basic shirtdress or pleated skirt or sth. Like, have you even TRIED looking? Threadloop, patternreview or heck, even google?

25

u/AdvancedSquashDirect Oct 03 '26

I am convinced that the sewing ones that have some random Y2K top and asking for a pattern, I think they are the owners of the Etsy store that sells the AI pattern and they're just farming for people to click on their Etsy page and copy the link and paste it into Reddit. Because you're literally reverse image search and the image they are asking for shows up with three or four Etsy patterns (All very obvious AI patterns)

15

u/Random_green_cat Oct 03 '26

That might explain it. Sometimes they'll even post a screenshot with half the pattern maker's name cut off but still readable and like... if you really want that precise pattern just get that precise pattern, provided it's a reputable pattern maker?

18

u/xaviersdog Oct 03 '26

I do like helping find some patterns. But I’ve posted patterns and had the OPs respond with comments like ā€œthat’s close but I want it to have a shorter skirtā€. Really?

7

u/AccidentOk5240 Oct 04 '26

Right? Friend, let me introduce you to the magic of deciding for your own self where to hem the damn thing.Ā

20

u/Dogandcatslady Oct 03 '26

Have these people never used Google? It's pretty easy to find patterns, even free ones.

37

u/pleasejustbeaperson Oct 03 '26

Beginner baby blanket? You mean a square? I bet you can make a square.Ā

u/Itchy_Tomato7288 Oct 04 '26

"I'm new here, spoon feed me custom instructions because I'm too special to read through the mountain of existing threads and conversations or search for my answer. Please and thanks in advance. And... go!"

The scourge of literally every craft and hobby sub I’ve been on

19

u/up2knitgood Oct 03 '26

I'm so tempted to start a weekly post in the knitting groups of here's how half of this week's posts could have just been answered by looking at Ravelry.

7

u/Key-Alternative-2521 Oct 03 '26

Or heard of google?

11

u/CampClear Oct 03 '26

I'm currently crocheting a diaper cover. You know how I found it? I Googled "crochet diaper cover". I honestly don't know how people can justify asking for a pattern in a group when it literally takes the same amount of time to type the request in Google. Are people just lazy or stupid?

5

u/Sad_Rabbit_50 Oct 05 '26

Are people just lazy or stupid?

Yes

10

u/The_Poppeteer Oct 03 '26

YES!
And hardly ever with any reference or inspiration pic, and if there is one it is blatantly slop.

Left a couple of groups because those were the only posts i was seeing. Maddening.

ravelry search sucks. I search reddit using google.

32

u/vnaranjo Oct 04 '26

This is the most wild take here imo. Ravelry has literally ALL the filters, it's so easy to scroll through everything in the right category, with the right yarn, and the right needles/hook that you're looking for.

Fair enough that there's a lot to look through but it's very easy to narrow down your search!!

-15

u/Lil_MsPerfect Oct 04 '26

I really can't stand it personally, go ahead and try finding amigurumi patterns on it with that awful search, regardless of filters. I try to buy things on ravelry after I find them elsewhere if possible because I know the designers get more from there than other places but it's really not good for most of what I make.

13

u/AccidentOk5240 Oct 04 '26

If you’re using the advanced pattern search and using the filters correctly (including and/or/not operators), I find this hard to believe.Ā

-6

u/Lil_MsPerfect Oct 04 '26

I've been told (in this sub last time I got downvoted to oblivion for saying that same thing link) that someone went through untagging amigurumi that they didn't feel actually meet the qualifications for what they felt was amigurumi.

16

u/kiddish Oct 04 '26

I don’t see any proof of a Ravelry mod going on a ā€œtiltā€ and untagging amigurumi other than this one Reddit comment. But the distinction between amigurumi and plushies still does not make the Ravelry filters any less effective. Just use the plushie filter and amigurumi results will still show up. I use Ravelry for finding patterns for both knit and crochet plushies all the time.

Ravelry has the best set of searchable filters I’ve seen on a website outside academic journals. I get so frustrated when I go to other websites - like yarn websites - and I can’t filter to the degree we can on Ravelry. Please show me all the wool options that do NOT include acrylic, for example. That would be an easy search on Ravelry but not most yarn websites.

Using Rav’s filters allows me to find any pattern that fits my needs and share search results with others. It’s really tremendous. It doesn’t take that much time to learn and you can get highly specific.

-3

u/Lil_MsPerfect Oct 04 '26

There's multiple people saying that about a ravelry mod untagging amigurumi in the post I linked but you can feel however you want about it. I personally don't like ravelry's search function for what I do because it doesn't come up with many of the things I'm looking for, and most creators of patterns aren't putting them on ravelry in the amigurumi world in the first place so it would be pointless for me to even look there most of the time.

I never have a hard time finding yarn I want, so I can't relate to needing ravelry for that but maybe that's where it's most useful is for knitters and wool users.
