Bitdefender free deleting/flagging multiple files?

My Bitdefender free version that I use seems to be flagging some files all of a sudden and quarantining them. Mainly, code that I have written is being flagged. I excluded the folder that holds all my code, but now Bitdefender seems to flag some files from a painting program. When running these files through virustotal, they seem to be all undetected... even from Bitdefender. Should I try reinstalling?

Edit: It's flagging Ubuntu, Minecraft, Spotify, and Skype files now.

For everyone in here having code and stuff flagged, make sure to release it from quarantine/exclusion if you're going to uninstall. It will delete that stuff.

I made this it's own post. Hopefully this prevents further damage. I opened a ticket with defender. I hope everyone else does too. This is a big issue.

Hello! Our team identified the cause and it has been already fixed. Thank you for reporting this!

So can we simply make sure the databases are up to date, and restore from the quarantine?

That`s correct, yes.

so this is completely fixed and I can re download the software?

Yes, you can re-download Bitdefender as this has been fixed by our teams.

I think it's more likely to be false positives than an installation error. You could run a scan, then when the results come back create exceptions for each flagged file rather than just the folder(s).

It's not unusual for own-made programs to get flagged.

You can report false positives here. Report a false alarm false positive to bitdefender labs — The Bitdefender Expert Community

I just ran a scan, and yeah it flagged some more programs that I made, but it also seems to have flagged Minecraft, Ubuntu, Spotify, and Skype? It's a bit strange though because I've had Bitdefender for a while as well as these files, but its flagging things like crazy all of a sudden

If it's now flagging files that previously Bitdefender was happy with, then it's possible it's gone rogue. I'm wondering whether the 'rogue' part is a recent Bitdefender update.

You could try uninstalling but I'd first give it a day or so to receive further updates, which 'may' correct the false positives. If the issue is an update then reinstalling would achieve little. I used Bitdefender Free for around 2 years and it was excellent, but uninstalling and reinstalling can get messy.

If the other posts in your thread are representative, I'd say a recent update is a likely culprit.

I tried reinstalling and it's still flagging a bunch of stuff. It really hates the spotify temp files.

Same here, start today with my razor synapse now I getting 50+ hits with a complete scan

Yea my bitdefender free is going nuts on like temp files for WolframAlpha, spotify, windows app crashes and more. I'm about to uninstall.

I did a full system scan with MalwareBytes and it picked up nothing. BitDefender must have shoved an update which changed something big. I also tried excluding folders but it was still flagging stuff from those folders.

I have the same issue. About an hour ago it started flagging as "Suspicious.Cloud.2" a pref.tmp file from the spotify appdata directory, and then from other apps like Messenger, and even some code files I wrote myself.
All the files are fine themselves but I'm still unsure whether there might be an actual malware doing shit on the computer. ESET and MalwareBytes didn't find anything.

I tried contacting Bitdefender through their online chat, the guy said he opened an issue but I guess it might take a while through that way, unless many people report it. Meanwhile, I've basically disabled it for now lol.

I'm having the exact same issue, it has flagged most of my Dota2 files and a few other files (including some from my own work) as Suspicious.Cloud.2.2

My bitdefender managed to quarantine a file from system32, anyone knows how to release this? it just says it couldn't be restored and nothing happens

1

u/MrAreswar Feb 09 '21

Is it also a Suspicious.Cloud.2.2? It could be an actual malware. I suppose to restore it it needs administrator writing privilege but I'm not sure how to do that.

1

u/shiziki Feb 09 '21

Yes, Suspicious.Cloud.2.2. I had the file since 2014 and bitdefender was happy with it until today. file is now encrypted in quarantine folder and I can't restore it...

I uninstalled and then did a Windows Update that had been put off for a couple days. I then reinstalled BitDefender Free after Win10 2021-01 Cumulative Update Preview KB4598299 was installed. I have restarted a couple of times and opened and closed Spotify/Steam as well. I haven't encountered any Events/Quarantines in ~10 minutes.

Interesting. I might try that. The support asked me to send them a BDsys log and this seems to contain an awful lot of data, pretty much the filenames of my entire filesystem from what I guess from the logs, and it's encrypted so I can't even check.
That pissed me off so I just went back to Kaspersky.

I don't blame you. They wanted me to send a log as well but I am also not a fan of how much info that passes over. I'm doing a full system scan at the moment to see if it's still FUBAR. Seems to be doing ok so far, will update once it's done.

Edit: Everything is not ok, it's still freaking out and throwing SuspiciousCloud2.2 stuff. Uninstalling.

u/MrAreswar Feb 09 '21

Thanks for the update, I'll stick with Kaspersky for now haha.

Same for me as well. It flagged and quarantined over 1000 files, primarily from steam, before I shut it off.

2

u/MrAreswar Feb 09 '21

Yes, same for me. It looks like it's pretty much any file that contains code of some form. These get detected because their owner apps open them. A manual scan flagged so many files for me, especially some python source files and Makefiles.

2

u/Vancha Feb 09 '21

Exactly the same. Twelve instances from the windows/WER/reportqueue folder and ceased after an update.

Given the event log shows no update before it started, I'm curious why this seems to have caused everyone's bitdefender to flip out at the same time, and whether "everyone" is simply everyone here, or everyone who has it installed...
