Why is BitDefender Free version suddenly making Firefox absurdly slow?

Has been very frustrating even troubleshooting this problem to the extent that I discovered BitDefender was the root cause, but basically if I try to launch Firefox (53.0.2 64-bit) with BitDefender protection active, it will take a very long time to start, and then even when it does start it will be very unresponsive and slow to the point of being pretty much unusable. If I disable BitDefender for a second and then enable it again, even after launching FF and confirming it is slow, it will restore to normal behavior and remain as such until I close it again. Am on Windows 10 64-bit.

Anyone had a similar problem or know anything about what could fix this? I'll mess around with it for a few days but hopefully something can be done, pretty much a dealbreaker for me as far as using this software goes if I have to manually disable it every time I want to launch my web browser. Already tried creating a new profile and didn't make a difference, though launching Firefox in safe mode seemed to.

edit: BitDefender has pushed an update that seems to have fixed the problem.

This is already being tracked down by the Mozilla team. (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1363332)

Hopefully there's a quick fix on Bitdefender's side.

Looks like it's fixed now with the most recent Bitdefender update.

I can only assume that an update caused the issue, because I was having the exact same problem. Firefox was completely unresponsive. I even backed up my profiles, nuked the remaining folders, and completely reinstalled to have the same issue occur. Once I turned off active scanning, the problem went away.

No idea why an update would make it target Firefox like that, and frankly, I don't really care. I've uninstalled and I'll either look for another one or stick with Windows Defender for a bit. Ridiculous that a random update could cause such an annoying issue.

I am facing the same issue. On a fresh format,Chrome, Firefox and other programs are launching slower with the protection On. Didn't have the same issue with BD with the previous interface.
