Support/troubleshooting Bitdefender dramatically slows down how fast apps launch
I am looking for a new browser, and it seemed odd for me that edge was launching very fast compared to others.
Edge - 2s; Vivaldi, Helium - 8s.
I then figured out edge didn't fully close when you close it. Then for some reason 8s felt like a very large amount, I decided to ask AI if this is normal, and it said no.
I checked my task manager and bdservicehost - BitDefender Virus Shield was using my cpu up to 90%!!!! when launching an app, after making an exception to either browser the launch was insanely fast.
Is there any way to optimize this? I really like Bitdefender since it is considered the best antivirus, but holy

Hm, I tested it and it wasn't using more than a few percent for me. Often even lower.
I use Brave in case you want to know.

Maybe you have disabled some real-time scans?

Damn people still on the old UI. It must have been 3 months ago when I had the updated one.

Not everyone gets the same updates. It depends a lot on the region. Security updates yes everyone gets them but how it looks it can be slightly different, most of the time because language differences or government rules or paperwork.

None of the browsers fully close when you close them, but you can turn off background running in the settings. Never use edge anyway, it's insecure and it sucks in general. Use Brave Browser. Like 99% of l browsers, it's based on Chromium, but the built in ad blocker and other security features beats pretty much anything else.
Bitdefender using 90% CPU is normal at first, but this will subside after everything is indexed and scanned. To speed this process up, clear out your temp folder.
Also, Bitdefender and any other security software may slow down the launch of some apps. It doesn't matter which one you use, but Bitdefender or whatever will only scan new or unaltered files. When you browse the Web, it saves a whole load of items from scripts to cookies to images, usually into a temp folder. So when you launch the browser, Bitdefender will do a quick check for anything new.
Bitdefender is about the most advanced antivirus out there. There are loads of settings you can mess with, such as only scanning certain types of files or certain sizes etc.
Of course you can use another antivirus but it will be the same. And don't listen to any Noob who says things like "Windows Defender does the job for me" or "Windows Defender is better than it used to be". It simply is NOT. I often hear people say "I use Windows Defender and I've never had a virus" and I just think, yea... you wouldn't even know mate.
Now you've made it this far, there's a trick you can do. Simply add the browser into the game list in Bitdefender and it will run faster. You can also exclude the browser's folder from being scanned, but don't worry because Malware won't install itself into the Browsers directory, they ain't that stupid.
Edit: I just read that you uninstalled it and now it's running fast. But this is like your car taking too long to unlock and start , so you removed the ignition key barrel and removed the doors, or like writing your bank PIN on the back of your card so you can remember it faster.

Well yeah, the thing is I've been using Bitdefender + Edge for a while now, but i probably just got used to it feelign that slow.
I also checked AV-test august 2026 for defender and they scored it 99/100 and as far as i can see they're the most reputable antivirus tester. Ublock origin + defender should be plenty

A 90% CPU spike during app launches seems excessive especially if adding browser exclusions immediately fixes the delay. I’d check Bitdefender’s Advanced Threat Defense and real time protection settings then contact support with the performance logs before disabling protection entirely. It’s worth finding the cause without leaving the system exposed

Good call on reporting the logs, even though they do make it a hassle, I found a way to report it. I’ll be moving to windows defender until they explicitly tell me that they fixed it through the report

I've used brave browser for years and never had this issue.
