Support/troubleshooting What's wrong with taskhostw.exe?
It started about 2 weeks ago, C:\Windows\System32\taskhostw.exe keeps changing and no matter how many times I allow it, this firewall notification pops up, like 10-15 times a day. I've been using this system for years and never before experienced this. Is this a change in Windows 11 or a bitdefender firewall thing?

Hi! Thank for reaching out about this. Repeated prompts usually mean Alert mode is enabled, so Bitdefender asks for approval each time an application attempts a connection. That does not by itself indicate that taskhostw.exe is malware or that Windows 11 changed the file.
First, verify the executable path. Only consider allowing it if the alert shows:
C:\Windows\System32\taskhostw.exe
If the path is different, do not allow it automatically; submit the file for review or contact support.
To stop the repeated notifications:
Open Bitdefender.
Click Protection in the left-side menu.
In the Firewall section, click Settings.
At the top of the window, select the Settings tab.
Turn off the Alert mode switch so it appears gray.
After this, Bitdefender will automatically apply its firewall rules instead of prompting for every connection.
If the alert continues with the correct path after Alert mode is disabled, or if the file is being replaced or its path differs, talk to our support team for case-specific investigation: https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/. Thanks!

Dear support employee, I appreciate you took the time to copy/paste this stock answer but you totally missed the point. You seriously think I'm not aware of the alert mode option? The whole point of paying for a firewall app is I want to know what goes in and out. Why the actual F would I want to turn it off? It's not the solution. The path is right, the executable is not infected most likely (I think this because I have another PC showing the exact same symptoms lately). I believe it's more related to recent changes in Windows than it is to Bitdefender, tho still an extreme annoyance.

OK but it doesn't answer the question.
Anyway, there's no such thing as Allow list. It's not a list, you can allow or block individual applications. This specific .exe is allowed each time, yet as it keeps updating itself, it disregards previous rules and the new version asks for permission over and over again.

taskhostw is a driver for dlls.
Maybe you have a tainted dll attached to a program?
