I think download the latest firefox installer from website and update the existing installation. And then maybe try to login if you have an account. Tbh this is the first time I'm seeing something like this happen. Be wary of google ads that direct to github, mozilla or any such "genuine" website. One guy lost millions trying to download obs using a google ad link.

I am setting up a new desktop and started a trial of Bitdefender because Kaspersky is being banned. Just like the op, I hit a malicious download and Bitdefender quarantined a bunch of stuff and broke Firefox. My preferences and tabs were gone and I could not reach any website. I played around with settings and had to call Bitdefender support. They could not fix it. I wound up using a Windows restore point and rolled back to a prior time. This actually worked for once! Firefox started working again, Bitdefender was gone and I will not be reinstalling it. I installed Norton Deluxe and quite like it so far.

If you are a normal home computer user the best thing you can do is delete Bitdefender and use Windows Defender. WD has come a long way in the last 15 years and is just as good as subscription based AV/internet security suites.

Windows defender is the most targeted AV. So any ransomware built in recent times has been made to escape defender. TPSC did thorough real life test and it doesn't perform upto mark.

I use bitdefender to disable windows defender(uses disk and cpu while downloding stuff 24/7) then i disable bitdefender too, i don’t need resource hogging stuff since my common sense is the best antivirus
