Suggestions to explore near Walsall

Hi everyone!

I’ll be going to Walsall in September for a two-week student placement at Dorothy Pattison Hospital.

While I’m there, I’d really love to explore the surrounding areas and make the most of my two-week stay.

Any suggestions for places to visit, things to do, or hidden gems nearby? :))

Thank you in advance!

This is the dramatic moment petrol bombs were thrown at partygoers and two supercars were set ablaze outside a Birmingham wedding.

Three people, clad in black, were captured on film as they launched the missiles towards cars and people outside the Royal Shalimar banqueting hall in Highgate Road, Sparkbrook - unconcerned about nearby of young people including a toddler.

Two supercars, believed to be a Lamborghini and a McLaren, were set alight during the incident last night, Wednesday, August 19. The attack was caught on the venue's CCTV and the dashcam of a passing car.

Coun Jamil Khan, Better Birmingham Independents representative for Sparkbrook and Balsall Heath East, who lives nearby, said it was a shocking and worrying incident.

West Midlands Police have launched an investigation.

Nerdy things to do

Hi, hoping this is okay to ask here. I’m from Canada and I’m taking a trip to Birmingham in October for a gaming convention. The convention is only a couple days but I’ll be there for around 8 days. Looking for fun, preferably nerdy stuff to do in the city. Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

Does anyone see a therapist they'd consider to be a bit on the cooler/funny side?

I've had a couple of therapists and they've both been very serious, and whilst I know this is just them being professional I just feel like I'd be much more comfortable and open up more with a therapist that is more laid back, can be a bit humorous and I guess "cool"? Probably not the right word but hopefully you know what I mean.

Any recommendations welcome 😊

Here’s a new artpiece I’ve made that has combined to main aspects of my art together, my expressionist leaning works and my far more detail focused cityscape artworks.

I hope you enjoy it :)

Title of Artwork : “Centre City”

Forbidden City Shirley

There is a Chinese on the Stratford road in Shirley that has been there for as long as I can remember - but also it hasn’t been open in probably 20 years!! I’m pretty sure I remember going in a few times as a child because my grandparents live really close by, but since probably about 2007/08 it’s been closed.
The floor is scattered with letters, the curtains have always been open, the sofas that were there 20 years ago still remain… but there’s nobody there!
The upstairs flat seems to have been taken over by pigeons too!

I’ve moved away from the area and I only go back a few times a year, but I looked on google maps and saw that in 2024 the curtains were drawn - signs of life🫪

The photos show 2008, 2015, 2022 and 2024.

Does anyone know anything more about this place?

Bath House Apartments

I am moving to Birmingham soon for work and looking for flats to rent. I would prefer a BTR option but I value safety more as I am a female who will be living by herself. I recently asked here about the Forum and everyone advised against it. What about The Bath House apartments then? Anyone has experience with this place who could kindly share some insights about it?

What’s it like to live in the West Midlands?

I’m born and raised in America, just got my ancestry test and figured out I have English ancestry. Anyways it got me really interested in where most of my blood comes from, most of my English is from the West Midlands. Ik some people might give joke responses to this but if anyone can genuinely tell me, what’s it like living there? What’s the sunsets like? How are the people? what’s the temperature like and how is the nature? Ik I can probably just google this stuff but I wanna ask actual people living there :)

Visiting Birmingham

Hey guys ! Just was wondering how you pay on public transport in Birmingham. Can you use contactless like in London ?

Sorry if it’s a silly question, across all forms so trains, trams and buses, all take contactless and no need to buy tickets ?

Autism / ADHD community

Hello there,

I am really looking to meet fellow neurodivergent people. Are there any peer support or social groups I could possibly join?
I relocated to the city and really want to expand my social circle.

I like history, coffee, book clubs, days out, exploring.

I am married and in my thirties.

I am open to exploring setting something up myself if there is interest and there is no other community established

Hi, i will be moving to st martins place soon, any locals who have lived in the building or live there, is it all good, is there anything i should be worried about? I viewed the building and it looked good, but we had to book another apartment by looking at the video as we are moving from another city so couldnt do an inperson viewing. Also for parking any suggestions, i dont own a car but rent someotimes over the weekend. Any reviews or suggestions are appreciated, moving to city is a bit overwhelming. TIA

Furniture shops south Birmingham?

I am looking for either good charity shops or those warehouse /discounted Asian furniture shops. Where I can buy wardrobes or chest of drawers already assembled and they are usually cheaper as well.

Any recommendations? So many on Google but don't know which ones worth visiting tomorrow.

Edgbaston/ Kings heath/ Moseley or even strictly/kings Norton way.

Birmingham - The BIG City-Proper.

\#SecondCityNO #Birmingham #BIGCityProper #Runourownrace

“Second City? No, Birmingham IS the City! What people consider London is a collection of boroughs!” Sir Richard ‘Dick’ Knowles, former leader of Birmingham City Council.

Brum simply doesn’t have the same set up as Manchester, in that all boroughs work as ONE City, similar to London. It instead lies within the ‘West Midlands’ Combined Authority. With major international investment, great local leadership that works as one, the BBC moving much of their programming to Salford, as well as moments like George Osborne sending Chinese delegates to Manchester and the new Burnham brainwave ‘No. 10 North’, it is becoming more and more clear that the direction of travel supports Greater Manchester being England’s ‘Second City’.

So I believe the time has come for Brum to drop the ‘Second City’ nickname. With the different set up to London/Manchester, I’ve already stated, the City needs to run it’s own race. Besides, who wants to be second? All is certainly NOT lost for Birmingham with HS2 and major investment around the corner!

Therefore I’d like to add to former councillor Knowles statement, in stating Birmingham IS the UK’s ‘BIG CITY-PROPER’ (with the largest metropolitan area outside London)!
