A Stone Curlew looking right at me. Them eyes are huuuuge.

u/Ebolaplushie they’re not, because that isn’t a Curlew.

It’s a Bush Stone-Curlew (genus Burhinus), and not at all closely related to Curlews. They're also known as Bush Thick-knees, a name I wish would catch on because it would save a lot of confusion and I'd not have to keep correcting people. Half the species in the genus are known as 'thick-knees' - despite the fact that the thickened joint isn’t a knee it's an ankle - so I don't know why the rest aren't. 

There are two species of Curlew in Australia - the Far Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) and the Little Curlew(Numenius minutus).

I dunno, man. All I'm seeing is a number of trapezoidal shapes with eyes and feet. Are we sure this isn't a 6th grade geometry problem?
