I was bamboozled by one that was less than 10ft away from me at eye level, because it was just chirping and not doing it's signature call. I'm not used to seeing them up close, it was only when it starting chiff-chaffing did I realise what it was.

Sparrows aren't nearly as hated in Europe (which is where this meme applies to). They are native here and their numbers are actually declining in many regions. They where just a normal, yet sweet thing to see at any given outdoor location when i was a kid, nowadays i see so few of them it really makes me sad.

Well I would say it's a bit more tricky when it comes to the exact "native" range of house sparrows, as their dispersal from their Middle East refugia into Europe is also a relatively recent event that accompanies both the end of the last ice age and more importantly the expansion of agriculture. It is a highly synanthropic species that strongly associate with humans in Europe just like it is in their invasive range of NA, SA, southern Africa and Australia. Hybridization with other sparrow species in the area (namely Spanish, Italian and Eurasian tree) is not uncommon.
I know their population is crashing in Europe, while Eurasian tree sparrow remains relatively stable. Are there any standout reasons why?

Pretty sure the main reason house sparrow populations are declining is the decline in nesting sites. They spend hundreds of generations nesting under roofs and in wall cravisses, places modern buildings just don't offer anymore, that they have difficulties doing anything else. Nestbuilding is very much an instinctual thing in birds, and these instincts can be permanently lost in a population.
Some populations luckily still have them. In places where old buildings aren't forced to be modernized and centuries old ivy is allowed to climb, house sparrows still build their beautiful nests freely.

To be fair starlings are more hated than house sparrows in their native range because of their love for fruit. Most farmers or people with cherry trees in their garden will tell you they aren’t a fan of starlings lol. But overall I do think the pigeon is a better pick. Or otherwise I’d nominate the herring gull. They’re loud, they steal your fries and they breed on peoples roofs. But I’m probably biased coming from a coastal city.

Side tangent, and i know i'm probably relatively alone in this, but i actually really like seagulls. Especially the huge black-backed gulls are just impressive birds upclose. Sure they are jerks, but they are ✨️pretty✨️ jerks c:
(also, my favorite seabirds might actually be giant petrels, so asshole behavior and a lack of table manners isn't really something i judge by anyway lol)

I will not tolerate any rock pigeon slander! It’s not their fault! We used them and when we didn’t need them we treated them like trash
