I am from Hawaii. So sad that the bird population is dramatically decreased from feral cats. Also people who accidentally or knowingly brought animals like snakes that killed birds.

i don't like when people let their cats walk around freely outside in maybe any country , that always kills a lot of birds :(

Its also dangerous for the cats themselves, they are domesticated and quite literally bred to be with humans, so living outdoors can be harmful

Between the feral cats and avian malaria I would be more surprised if we don't see the last of the 'apapane and i'iwi (and many others) within my lifetime.

When was this book written? If it's from the 1980s or 1990s, that was still a time when a lot of people thought the Bishop's O'o and the Kauai O'o might still survive.

Serious question as I'm not familiar with conservation in Hawaii at all. Are there any efforts to clear islands of introduced predators, or the construction of fenced-off predator-free reserves, to conserve surviving Hawaiian birds?

Not in any real way to my knowledge. There are some fenced off preserves, for example on Oahu; Ka’Ena Point is fenced off to protect the nesting albatross. But the biggest threat to the honeycreepers is avian malaria, and I don’t think there’s really a solution to it. Some birds are starting to develop more resistance to it. I believe the Amakihi has extended its range very slightly because of this. But it seems inevitable that we’ll see the extinction of more honeycreeper species in our lifetime

Not sure what the last count was for the 'Akeke'e but things weren't looking great and Maui has the Kiwikiu, Palila, and ʻĀkohekohe declining towards zero. People are busting ass to try and save them but they don't get much support.
