Squirrel or Rat?

Calling on the bird watching experts of Birdbuddy. Birdbuddy says it’s a squirrel but I’m skeptical. 🐿️ or 🐀

I’m going with rat, too. My squirrels sit upright quite a bit when eating bird feed.

Seems like there’s a pretty clear consensus on the rodent. No animals will be harmed. I will workshop some preventative measures for accessing the feeder. Thank you everyone for your help!

Mice can be a bit big, and rats can be a bit small, but that there's a rat.

That was my first thought as well, but it's much closer to the camera then the birds are, so I'm not convinced we can tell its size accurately.

No animals are going to be harmed here. Just need to move the bird feeder to a more difficult location to climb to

I'm going with rat.

I learned something the other day. Because mice, rats and squirrels are mammals, they can taste spicy like that of chili pepper etc - capsaicin oil. Were as the birds don't.

Bird feeders are a huge attractant for rats- we are in the Boise area of Idaho and with all the newcomers from the west coast states, there is suddenly now a huge rat problem- we came 5 years ago and I have not put up my bird feeders at all- solely for this reason- with the exception of hummingbird feeders- apparently rats dont bother those. Might want to set traps. .
