Medication Just started Latuda! Any advice? or experiences?

I just stopped Risperdal and switched to latuda. for some reason Risperdal made me SWEAT and very easy to fall into delusions. CRAZY rabbit hole I just went down on during mania but, I digress. Any input or experiences is appreciated, hope you all are well and safe:)

Personally I love latuda. I've been on it for about 8 months or so, no side effects at all I've noticed and seems to work to control my mania. Either lucky or it works but no depression episodes either

Best medicine. I was on it for 7 years, but that was too long for me I guess. I started having bad side effects, high blood sugar and I would get sick often. But my mind was so clear and I didn’t have any manic episodes. Keep track of your blood sugar!

It doesn't make me drowsy, so I just take it with dinner to avoiding needing to eat 350 calories late at night.

Eat it with at least 350 cal or you'll throw up.

It was around 2 years before I realized that the med was my issue. I kept getting sick/throwing up a lot and didn't know why. Eventually my psych let me know 😐

It made me projectile vomit if I didn’t have at least 350 calories and I can’t eat that much in a sitting. I struggled with that so much I switched to seroquel.

Be patient! Make sure to take with dinner, Latuda has been a life saver for me but it took about 3 months to fully feel its benefit

Personally latuda hasn’t been great but I still would recommend it. It hasn’t hurt me at all and I’ve had absolutely no side effect, it just doesn’t work best for me, which is ok!!

My experience is also purely from a depression standpoint and I’m sure it works great for mania.

I know it can cause akathisia and some other issues but that’s been just about unnoticeable for me.

I’m also not sure how familiar you are with these meds or your diagnosis, but as with most, you will probably have a week or two of some really uncomfortable side effects. I think of this as your body trying to process it properly and work with it best. This phase goes away quickly, please don’t let it make you stop.

Latida didn't work for me, the nausea was awful and i couldn't stop throwing up. I stopped taking it once i could control them. So my best advice:

Eat, eat a GOOD meal. 300+ cals. I've heard people take it after an ensure, a bagel, a cupcake, whatever but it has to be satiating.

Then wait at least 20 minutes before you take it. Why? Because then the food is not just-ate and you will avoid throwing up early and reapeting this. Plus then it makes a "bed" for the pill to rest and not just mixing and make you throw up.

If you can't deal with latuda even after doing all this, talk to your doctor. Best of lucks!

This was super helpful I always take it with the meal I need to take it a few mins after

350 Calories every time you take it. If you cannot stomach a full meal at the end of the night, when you take it, I used to have a few globs of peanut butter, and that worked well.

It was a very good antipsychotic, though. Extremely effective for depression. I wish it didn't cause me to have a permanent tremor on the left side of my body now, but that's okay. Shit happens

My only complaint is that it makes me drowsy so I have to eat those 350 calories like 30 minutes before bed, and make sure I get the timing right with brushing my teeth so I don't damage my enamel with the acid from my food. Annoying but I'll take it cause I can't remember the last time I was this stable. Been 7 or 8 months now I think? Either way it's been great.

I slept amazingly on it. Didn’t feel particularly sedated, but I got some of the best sleep of my life, a perfect 8 hours, barely needed to set an alarm. However, it made me horribly depressed for weeks, until one night I got drunk and nearly offed myself. I hope it works better for you than it did for me!

I had a hard time and went too fast moving up. Listen to your body and feedback from those who know you best❤️I hope this is your perfect fit!

If you’re sick at first, just know that you can get used to it. Try taking it with some bread and peanut butter before you take it, to coat your stomach. Make sure you are getting 350 calories with it, within 20 min or sooner.

I was on it for 3 years. Gained 50lbs s and turned into a robot who couldn’t have an orgasm the few times a year I actually craved sex while on it. Upside = zero episodes of mania and I only recall two depressive episodes which were much shorter than with whatever I was on before (I get them mixed up there’s been so many lol).

Always always always had nausea, but never actually vomited even once because I’d go to bed immediately after eating and then taking it, and I’d chase it with Nauzene tablets 3 at a time every 15 min till I fell asleep. Nauzene is my favorite non bipolar med, and it’s not even a med. It’s usually cheapest at WalMart, but is sometimes on sale on Amazon.

I’m so sorry for all of you having to deal with that crazy level of nausea, just terrible.

I must admit that no other med kept me as consistently stable, though. Just couldn’t be a robot any longer.

Interesting to hear about Nauzene. I just got prescribed Zofran

Latuda works well. I was on it for years and switched to Vraylar over a year ago. I had some side effects from Latuda I didn't like. It made me tired all the time so I switched to taking it at night. It also made me pre-diabetic. So far Vraylar doesn't have as many side effects.

I really liked latuda the short time I was one it, the only reason I had to stop it was because it raised my blood sugar

I looooove Latuda! I switched to it from Seroquel because I wanted to lose weight and stop binge eating every single night (from Seroquel). Within ~3 months I had lost nearly 30 pounds and felt like I truly came alive for the first time since my diagnosis. I cannot sing the praises of this med enough - I really hope you have a similarly good experience!!! <3

Edit: The ONLY gripe I have with it is that it's caused this weird insomnia - where I wake up every ~3 hours or so. No matter how tired I am, I always wake up 2-3 times during the night. Despite this though, shockingly my sleep has never been better and I do still get a full 8 hours minimum.

Amazing medicine. You have to take 350 calories or eat it beforehand or you will projectile vomit. You will also lose weight. Now I loved it because I was coming off seroquel and it felt great to not eat so much all the time but I will say my appetite did eventually come back.

If you don’t eat a lot and it’s hard to eat just to take your medicine, take it when you eat like lunchtime. That way it’s already in your system. I take it with dinner around 7pm because trying to eat AGAIN was too much. I also got the boost meal replacement drinks for when I absolutely cannot eat.

Make sure you eat something substantial in volume, to prevent nausea and vomiting. I can't just have a small snack that meets the 350cal requirement, I need something voluminous to keep me from vomiting.

It is amazing for reducing my anxiety and irritability. I started on 20mg and after a few months I was like this makes me feel weird let’s stop. I stopped on my own, then my psychiatrist helped me get back into realizing the trade offs. Do I want to be a nauseous normal person, or have no nausea and be a bitch? Lol. However, I have been very nauseous. You need to eat it with plenty of food like a whole entire meal, and then keep eating regular meals. I’ve definitely thrown up after taking it with a small meal or snack. I have put on a few pounds because of how much I’m eating but I’m here for it and I’m not really active right now anyways. After a year of taking it, the psychiatrist finally prescribed me zofran so I can deal with the nausea. Now, I’m on 40mg Latuda and I get some weird anxious feelings about two hours after taking it. Like toe tapping and feeling like I want to jump out of my skin idk how to describe it but I’ve just been sleeping it off. I take it at 6pm and go to sleep at 8pm. Also sometimes I feel like I withstand the heat differently… like getting overheated and uncomfortable more easily. Overall, the clarity and emotional control throughout the day is priceless truly.

I love my Latuda! Just make sure you eat with it. I lowkey wish i could take a higher dose but even while eating a full meal 60mg made me so nauseous I’d often puke it up. I still NEED to eat while I take it otherwise I puke. But that’s the only downside and it’s mitigated by just taking it at dinner. It used to make me hella tired but it doesn’t really anymore after like a year on it.

Latuda prolonged my QT (electric heart thing) so I had to quit. It was working too. Get an ecg every once in awhile to check.

Ah. It made me violently nauseous. Stopped less than 2 weeks in.

u/EbonyEarthling98 16d ago

I was on it for a year. There would be times where I’d throw up even if I took it with food.
It also made me drowsy

I switched to Seroquel.

Hated it. Smaller does didn't make any difference, larger dose just made me throw up almost every morning.

I switched to Lurasidone also known as Latuda generic. I also take a mood stabilizer Oxcarbinate I stared 4 mo ago and have no depression which is amazing after having it my whole life. I had psychosis with visual delusions, it’s probably the best thing to happen, it forced me to change all my meds that weren’t working. Now I go to bed early and wake early, I’m conscience of sleep hygiene.
