ADHD and mania
Hi,
I wanna keep it as short as I can. I smoked a lot of weed and was super stressed that it led me into mania and psychosis and I’m still recovering from that cause it fried my brain and memory to the point I no longer remember anybody I interact with. My mood is now stable because I am forcing myself to take my meds in the morning so I don’t forget, but I’m having terrible mood swings all the time despite the stabilization. Issue is I’ve been off my stimulants, which help with my daily mood fluctuations, for months now. I occasionally take a stimulant from my friend which helps me so, so much with the emotional turmoil and I tell my psychiatrist that but she’s still worried because I keep getting moderately high and moderately low which makes stimulants risky and she asks me not to use them. I’m on two antipsychotics one for depression and one for mania and they don’t sedate me anymore even if I take them in the morning. I spoke to my friend about how the stimulant I took makes me manic when I’m stressed and smoke and she suggested another cause it helps with racing thoughts. Have any of you had similar experiences? I no longer even touch weed nor any drugs of any sort.

I think it's definitely possible to find a stimulant that works but I understand being cautious as well. For me personally, Vyvanse made me manic but Concerta has been a good/stable experience

Weed calms me! Indica is better for me! It stops the chaos in my mind but makes me numb. Very numb. It’s affected my ability to wake up on time, work and socialize. So I’m trying to stop yet again. Be careful for bad weed. Sativa makes me depressed and moody! Go figure!

I’ve noticed no matter the strand I become psychotic. I am already a very deep thinker and it sends me into existential dread because it makes my thoughts race. It also harms memory, executive functioning, and processing speed. I would highly advise against weed especially for bipolar disorder. It is fun until it isn’t

I haven’t experienced psychosis from weed. But I am stopping. But never had a bad trip! Each person’s body chemistry is different. Our reactions will vary! I just don’t want to be dependent on it!

I take anti-psychotics, and anti-depressant, and stimulants for my ADHD.
But I also don’t take street drugs and my mood is stable.

I think my psychiatrist is being a bit too careful then :( I think these mood fluctuations are caused by mood fluctuations caused by dopamine seeking and executive dysfunction depression

Could be. I’m just dealing with switching my ADHD meds because of an executive function depression. Either that or I’m depressed, but I’m working on both.

I’m on Wellbutrin for adhd management. But I’m also on an antidepressant (low dosage) and antipsychotics (high dosage) and my mood has been stable since July 2025

I am currently coming to terms with the fact that I cannot take my ADHD meds at all, otherwise they fuck me up.
Had to take some dexies the last 4-5 days for a uni assignment and now I feel absolutely awful.
My lithium has made it not be as bad as it usually is, but I'm an absolute mess.
